Tree House Pastry Shop and Cafe

This was our first meal for this trip to New Mexico. We went because a Yelp review mentioned it worked for vegans. (Thanks, Yelp reviewer!) And it really was good.
We had a large meal for a reasonable price, and though we modified a vegetarian meal to make it vegan, the waiter was happy to work with us. When he accidentally brought out tacos with cheese on them, he gladly replaced them when he realized we couldn't eat them.
Great food, good price, lovely patio... (though, watch out for bees and the birds in the trees!) I hope to eat there again sometime!

Looking for a fancy meal, with several vegan options, we ended up at Ruan Thai. Both meals were artfully prepared, included tasty variations on the preparations that we're used to, and were delicious.

Firefly Cafe
Categories: American (New), Caribbean, Vegetarian
We were really excited to go to the Firefly Cafe as we were looking forward to a vegan meal. We went with family with more traditional diets, and all four of us had excellent meals. Great food. It was all pretty simple in terms of ingredients and preparation. The portions were really large, and we felt good about the food for the (somewhat higher than we were expecting) price.
The waiter was friendly and helpful, and knew what we were asking for without our having to explain things in great detail. The atmosphere is cute and cozy. I really recommend this place!

I've been here both times I've been to Savannah, and I'm sure I'll go back next time I'm in town. The atmosphere is a nice mix of fancy and fun, and I can't resist a tea room.
This time we just got a pot of tea (which they said was okay to do). We had quite a wait, but when the tea came, it was very good. The tea in the pot was in a commercial bag, and based on the waiter's comment that they don't sell loose tea and that the tea for sale was Harney and Sons, I assume that's the brand of tea they're brewing as well. I didn't ask the waiter... he seemed to know more about the food than the tea.
If you're a big tea fan, it's worth visiting, though I'd go in with moderate expectations.

Sevananda Natural Foods Market
Categories: Grocery, Health Markets, Vegetarian

My husband and I were looking for a vegan lunch on a Sunday, and this was one of the few vegan places that showed up on Yelp that had both excellent reviews and was open.
And it didn't disappoint. Sevananda is a coop, but anyone can shop there. We went because of the reviewed hot bar, which was smaller than I expected (based on reviews), but everything on it was amazing. The cold prepared foods we got were amazing as well. There is a small sitting area by the front door with a microwave, if you need it.
Now that I'm back home, I'm already missing twice-baked potatoes, macaroni and "cheese" and key lime pie. I'll be sure to go back next time I'm in town.

Oh my goodness, what a wonderful library! I was just a visitor, but browsing around this place caused my husband and I to muse about moving to a city that clearly valued reading and learning this much. The front of the library appears to be a Carnegie building, and a large glass building frames it when you are looking straight on. It's as though the building itself is symbolic of the traditional library values and the changing ideas about what libraries are. Lovely space inside and out. You must check it out if you're in town!

Roots Restaurant

Yum! When I reviewed Soma, I said that it didn't live up to the high expectations that I had due to Yelp reviews. Roots benefited from the Yelp enhanced expectations. I went in not expecting it to be particularly great, but I LOVED it. I had the biscuits with sage gravy and my husband had french toast. I wish we had another day in Bloomington just to try the country fried seitan! The Yerba Mate Latte was great and when the espresso wasn't, the waitress made a new one. The experience was a great one, but I wish they'd hire more wait staff. We were never waiting long, but it did seem like the waitress was running around non stop just to keep everyone happy.

Soma Coffee House
Categories: Coffee & Tea, Vegan
We went because of the yelp reviews, but perhaps they built our expectations up too much. Soma is a nice coffee shop, with a variety of sitting options, but feels like it is really trying to be a hip coffee shop rather than just being one. You know what I mean? It's cool. I'm sure if I go back to Bloomington I'll make sure to stop there, but it didn't blow me away the way that I expected it to.
The service was a bit slow and the servings were small for the price, but the waitress was very friendly (several wore tee-shirts promoting important causes), the food was tasty, and the menu had a lot to choose from.
The bindi had whole okra, rather than chopped as most places prepare it. The vegetable pakoras had an unusual (but good!) texture... a bit more bready than others I've had. You get three chutneys with them.
All in all, it was a nice place to go, but not out of this world.

The breakfast burrito was amazing. And the tempeh was some of the best I've ever tasted. The granola was great, and came with fresh raspberries and apple cubes. The setting was very enjoyable; we sat next to a window.
I highly recommend Tree House Pastry Shop and Cafe. Nice people, great food, and vegan friendly. What more could you ask for?
