Mugs Ale House

The wood paneling makes it look like you're in a furnished basement circa 1972, and once inside you realize this space is really tiny. It's not a bad place, but it's location is..which is something a number of places in this area suffer from.
I wouldn't likely suggest this place to someone visiting the city, but knowing it exists is good in case you're in the area early and want to have a meeting spot.
It seems to remain a hidden gem located just one block away from the strip of bars that overflow with people near the Haymarket Orange Line T Stop. That's fine by me. I'll keep Nelly's in mind during future trips to the North End.

675 Bar
Category: Lounges
Neighborhoods: Meatpacking District, West Village
This place was a sex club back in the day. That nugget of information made my night a lot better. Then I met someone who claimed to have frequented the place when it was a sex club! Ha! It was awesome. I also saw a man wearing a full length fur coat with a hood. That was also fantastic.
The music was decent, though the DJ seemed to arbitrarily cut some songs short and remix others. The night I was there, someone from The Hills was there. I don't watch The Hills, so I couldn't figure out who it was. I don't even know what the premise of the show is. I never saw them myself..but I looked. Apparently they were wearing pajamas to the 675 Bar.
A long story short, this place is a good option for a big crowd on a birthday night out. Relatively cheap beer that is easily accessible, and room to sit or dance like an idiot without knocking someone over.

Brooklyn Bowl
Categories: Bowling, Music Venues
Neighborhood: Williamsburg - North Side
Luckily, someone mentioned the bowling alley was nearby. I didn't realize that Brooklyn Bowl shares the block with the Brewery! Around the corner! It was going to be great.
However, we went into Brooklyn Bowl around 4:30PM, and were told it would be a 3 hour wait to get a lane. 3 Hours! An already disheartening trip to the area seemed to only get worse. However, we decided to head to the bar and wait for a few more friends that were going to meet up with us.
Saddling up to the bar, things started looking up. They had Brooklyn beer on tap. All Brooklyn! Brooklyn Brewery, Kelso, and Sixpoint. It was a good sign. Then we had some appetizers. I had no idea that the best wings in Brooklyn were at Brooklyn Bowl. More appetizers, more beers, more friends, and suddenly it's 3 hours later and we've been given a lane for bowling.
Final bowling scores aside, it was awesome. Pitchers of beer, and a soundtrack provided by the live entertainment located behind the rows of bowling lanes made for a great night. We left around the time the club scene started at Brooklyn Bowl, and that was all right by me.
It was a great early evening/night option when drinking and bowling with friends is what you're looking for. It's not really cheap, but it *was* really fun.

Turkey's Nest Tavern
Category: Dive Bars
Neighborhood: Williamsburg - North Side
Perhaps it was the group I was with, perhaps it was crowd in the Turkey Nest, perhaps it was the few gallons of good beer already ingested, and maybe it was equal parts of all three, I had a lot of fun here. There's a good chance I'll end here again for a pint or two on the way to the subway after another trip to the brewery.

We happened to stop in at the very end of their happy hour, and the bartender gave us the buy-back token anyway(didn't even realize it was happy hour until we left and saw the sign!). It wasn't crowded on a weekday night, and we were able to grab a table before long. It was a solid place to have a few drinks to discuss the movie we just saw and watch the few dogs in the bar try to hump each other.
I'm not sure if their music was jukebox or the bartender's playing with their itunes, but it was awesome. It was rock/pop but not the typical top 40.
The front of Shoolbred's has frosted windows. For those who won't go into a place that you can't see into, trust me, it's worth the gamble!
I wonder how many people have gone here, spent the entire night, and then found themselves having a hard time remembering exactly what the name of the place was. Shoolbred's? Schoolbred's? SchoolBreed's? ShoolBreed's?

Home on 8th
Category: Chinese
Neighborhood: Fashion District
I found Home on 8th through Yelp. It was the only real option in the area where the buses dropped us off, and this place is a hidden gem. The place smelled awesome and the food was fantastic.
I had the peking bun appetizer because yelpers suggested it, and it was great. As was the noodle soup and the beef with broccoli. I'll definitely head back here when the hunger pangs start after getting off the bus. It's worth mentioning that they have an entire vegetarian menu, so it's fun for the whole group.

They have a ton of beer options and the food is great as well. I liked it because it fit in with the crowd you would find at the brewery. There's nothing wrong with the fine citizens of Williamsburg, but you don't find a lot of the same ironic t-shirts worn by multiple people. It's a no-frills burger & beer joint. The prices are fair as well.
Overall, I really like Mug's where it is. It's a great spot before or after drinking beverages at the great brewery!
