Cafe Lu

What is there to say about Cafe Lu that hasn't already been said? It is a Vietnamese coffee shop with a bunch of girls in bikinis, tight dresses, or totally naked with pasties and body paint. You know it is really something interesting when you see that the windows are totally blacked out so you cannot see inside.

I really liked the French/Vietnamese coffee here. But like with cafes of this type, the drinks are pricey because the girls are providing you with eye candy. The girls are definitely pretty here. A good mix of Asians and non-Asian ladies work here.

The atmosphere is what I have a problem with. It says that they do not allow smoking, but they don't enforce it. Therefore, it smells like a gigantic ashtray that resulted from hours and hours of cigarette hot-boxing. The patrons here are what you would expect. I will not even elaborate on that.

But this is a nice place to lounge around if you do enjoy this type of cafe.

I tended to always drive past this place until one fateful day where my girlfriend and I stopped here for an impromptu dinner. Inside is really quaint and classic. A wonderful place to spend a night after hitting up the Echo or Echoplex.

The food is a little on the pricey side. It has typical diner style food with deli choices and even pasta. I tried the reuben, and it was a hefty sandwich, a tid bit on the greasy side. My girlfriend tried the spicy pasta. It too was very rich and thick. Anyways, we ended up having dessert, the banana creme pie.

It was the best part of the meal! If there is something I recommend here, it is the dessert. Go for it. The rest of the food is pretty average, but the dessert is totally worth it.

A nice Japanese bar and grill with plenty of interesting morsels to munch on and interesting cocktails to wash down your gullet.  It is a great place to wind down the night.

Most of the food on the menu consist of tiny dishes. It is not much food, but it does promote experimentation with ordering the right ones for you. Recommended are the grilled rice balls, with the soy flavor being the best one. There are various yakitori, tempura, and other deep-fried and grilled items. I like the sweet potato tempura on a stick, and the spicy tuna-filled fried peppers. If you are daring, go for the grilled beef tongue with sesame oil dip.

Here are some of the bads... The main consensus is that the fried oysters and some of the other fried items aren't the best. Instead go for the grilled variations instead. Try not to go for the bigger entries other than the seafood pancake. You can get better Japanese stuff around Little Tokyo. Also, there is only street parking. They don't validate for any lots in the area.

There are various soju and beer cocktails. Very interesting to try.

It is not pricey at all, and it is very interesting to try all of the strange dishes they make here. Will definitely come back.

Footsie's

Neighborhood: Cypress Park

Picture a place exactly like a classic party movie filled with different characters everywhere. Old School, Superbad, Dazed and Confused. This is Footsies. Not many people you can play footsies with here, but it is a nice atmosphere with decently-priced drinks and interesting people all around you.

Initially, I thought Footsies was a dive bar for middle-aged people, but in actuality it is filled with hipster around my age. Rumors that this is a gay bar is greatly exaggerated. One time I went, there were two guys with  handlebar mustaches playing pool, a garage band playing, people moshing, and just a bunch of people in the back smoking and chatting. It is almost like drinking in the comfort of someone's college rental house. It does bring those college memories back.

On most nights, it is pretty empty, but on the weekends they usually have this kind of atmosphere. Think of this as a little oasis in the dicey Cypress Park neighborhood.

Mottainai Ramen

Ramen experimentation.

The ramen does have a nice chewy consistency, but the broth is what makes the whole entree delicious. There are several broths, numerous condiment additions (including various spicy BOMBS) which could make your ramen either great or disastrous. That being said, be careful of what works and what doesn't.

What you cannot go wrong with is asking for a thicker broth. Even if they lack noodles, the soup will fill you right up.

Remember to ask for their frequent eater stamp card.

Olive Garden Italian Restaurant

It is bad. Really bad. Almost shitty.

The soup was barely edible. Looked like it was thrown up by someone, really.  The salad was plain, probably cut with a hacksaw. The pasta is not very good for the price. Even the breadsticks are cold. If you are spending this much for Italian food, why not get something great and special down the street?

But worst of all, the service is almost intolerable. We saw our server throw our credit card and it ended up all the ground. Smooth move, Ferguson.

Never coming back here again. Don't care if someone else is buying.

I ordered a side of hash browns, and the plate was as big as my head. If there is one thing they get right at Coral Cafe, is there is plenty of food for the money. Bring your stomach and your drunk ass over to this side of Burbank.

Simple American fare, at very fair prices. And after you have a sandwich and pancakes, you can take a pie home. Awesome.

It was a late Saturday night. As I glance at the menu, there was evidence that everything is going to end up delicious and fattening. And then I put down that menu noticing that there are a lot of fat people in this place, probably due to the fact they are regulars eating heavy meals at midnight.

But who am I to judge? The only thing I want to judge is the pancakes, which are fluffy, resulting in them melting in your mouth. Everything in here is really satisfying and not pricey in the least bit. Just good American food and tons and tons of calories. Like Michael Phelps training for the Olympics fattening.

It might be my go-to place for late night pancake-craving munchies. Sorry to anyone who reads this that i might have called fat.

Kouraku Restaurant

Looking for a late-night Japanese treat? If you are in the Downtown LA area and need some sobering comfort food, make your way down to Kouraku. But remember to bring cash, because that is the only thing they take. It should be around $10 or less per person for a good meal.

With the dicey haunted hallway, this hole in the wall ramen shop has plenty of selection. Make sure you order the right things, however. You cannot go wrong with many of the ramen, but anything else might be a hit-or-miss. I recommend the shoyu and champon. Compared to other shops in the area, this place has a great variety of broths, and the noodles are pretty tender. It might be fun to experiment with something new every time, but that is very, very dangerous. You might end up with a ramen that is absolutely terrible for you.

But highly recommended is the fried rice, which might be the best tasting thing on menu. Remember to order the FRIED RICE! You wont go wrong.

Billy's Deli

A total delicatessen experience in the heart of Glendale. When you step into Billy's Deli, it is almost like walking into another world. There is a sort of simplicity with this restaurant. The food, the service, and atmosphere. It is all easy-going, but very solid.

I have eaten here four times in the past two weeks and find myself growing more and more fond of this place. The first visit, the waitress was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. She made us feel really welcome, just like we were guests inside her own home.

The portions here are what you expect out of a Jewish deli. Oversized, enough for you to save for later. The burgers are juicy and a mouthful. The fried shrimp is spot on. But what really does it for me are the sides. The cole slaw is well done. The potato salad might be my favorite dish here. For those who what the true Jewish deli experience, the corned beef, pastrami, and matzo ball soup should be the first on your list here.

In addition to the entrees, there are plenty of desserts ranging from carrot cake to chocolate-flavored soda.

I feel really relaxed in here. Also, I kind of wished they were open in the middle of the night like most of my favorite food spots like Coral Cafe or Canters'. If you are ever in Glendale and want something a little simpler than the hectic Los Angeles style, you should give Billy's a try.

GameStop

Sometimes I do not understand why there are so many Gamestops in business. I mean their new games aren't cheaper than other retail stores. And their used games are way more expensive than what you can find on eBay, Amazon Marketplace, and other game specialty shops.

When I was younger and couldn't buy things online, I would visit Gamestop and EB for certain types of games. Recently, I had so many bad experiences with Gamestop that I haven't bought anything at one for a long, long time.

Most of the bad experiences is with the lack of staff at certain locations. With this location, there was one person staffed at the store and a long line. Secondly, I went in to purchase a "NEW" game as a gift. Not only was the game not factory-sealed, the staff couldn't find the box. Instead I got the used box for a new game. Try to explain that to me. Not only was that bad, but I had to pay full price for a game that might be used anyways. By the way, the used one was only $3 off retail! If I was willing to buy it off eBay, I can get a sealed one for a fraction of the used one at Gamestop!

But wait, there is more. One time I preordered a game and was supposed to receive a bonus for putting in a deposit. When I picked up the game, they said the items were all given away. How can that be? I showed up in the morning and it was not the most popular release anyways. It was Chrono Trigger for NDS! I knew they lied and didn't bother to even look for the preorder gift. I could have waited a couple weeks and got it on Amazon for $10 less.

I believe Gamestop has a terrible business practice. The employees tell customers about holding copies for them if they preorder in advance. Most often than not you can pick up the game anywhere else without the hassle. Also, sometimes they don't even order enough for the demand.

I rather people shop at other gaming shops, online stores, and even rent their games than give Gamestop more money.
