Natural Grocer's

Categories: Grocery, Health Markets

It would perhaps be hyperbolic to say that East Dallas used to be a food desert before Natural Grocers moved into Casa Linda given that Albertson's is right across the street. But now that we only have to drive a mile or two instead of 5 to avoid dysfunctional Albertson's, I am in heaven.

I especially like that they *only* carry organic produce, and their bulk section is pretty wonderful.

The Old Monk

Update - 1/12/2010
"Nearly unmatched" is hyperbole I realize since just about every pub in Dallas serves pretty much the same selection of beers--for a while now anyway. For a truly outstanding list of beers on tap, etc. you must visit Eno's in Oak Cliff.

I try to avoid the Old Monk when it's crowded because I go for the food (and beer). It's perfect for week nights or my favorite beer-drinking time Sunday afternoon. The skinny fries are delightful with tarragon mayo. The lentil soup is like none other I've tried, in a good way. Tasty pub fare overall ... and the beer selection is nearly unmatched in the area. Try the mussels!

Hacienda on Henderson

So we ordered the botanas platter our third time out to the Hacienda which mostly consisted of corn tortillas and cheddar cheese slabs worked into familiar forms like nachos and quesadillas with all the flair of a 10-year-old learning to use the microwave. Oh the quesadillas--imagine a Jack in the Box taco minus the cat food & wilted lettuce. Sort of late night desperation food. Not exciting when you are sober. There was also some fajita meat in the middle, not terrible, not amazing. And I don't hate the empanadas. It's a bar first; the food is clearly an afterthought. Want proof? Refer to the ratings from the people who have drank here more than eaten the food.

Pizza Port

While I am more a fan of thin crust pizza, Pizza Port's poofy pies won me over with their deliciousness. And the on-site craft beer selection, wow. We had their basic ale (forgot the name) and it was bright, refreshing and flavorful--really everything you want in a beer. I was even able to ignore the howling Chargers fans that filled the place (football season, ugh)--that's good beer & pizza. My only regret is not having room for the Stout Float ... next time ...

Pleasant, open-air, and near the beach, this place serves all your brunch staples: bagels, eggs benedict, waffles. Yummy cappuccino, too. It's a casual walk-up order set up with a good sized patio dining area. Where else can this sort of place exist but on the west coast?

One of my cohorts asked, "is asparagus still good for you when it's beer-battered & deep-fried?" Answer, "yes."

Fancy home-cooking pretty much says it all. The sides on the menu are all starches, which made me a tiny bit wary until my molasses & chile pork chop showed up bedecked with the starch and a variety of steamed squashes. All of which I mostly ignored in favor of the killer pork chop which was slathered with roasted apple slices. Good lord that was a delicious pork chop.

Next time I am in town, I may try the brunch!

Royal Thai

Prettiest Thai restaurant in town, so far as I am aware. I'm reading all these glowing reviews of curries and dumplings and tom kha whatnots ... I only know the Crispy (Spicy?) Catfish is the best thing on the menu. For the, nearly, decades I've been going to this place I can't tear myself away from this dish. It's oh-so-good. So I'll just be blissfully ignorant of everything else here that I'm sure is wonderful!

The Tipperary Inn - CLOSED

Wow, I'm really surprised to read the not-so-great reviews. I love the Tipp, but I also love mellow pubs with limited smoking. Quiet evenings out don't bother me very much. With that said, I understand being preturbed when a place is "out of" items on the menu. My charitable suspicion would be that maybe the Yelp event took them by surprise? Once I think they were out of mayonnaise, so I got herbed mayo instead--not a horrible substitution. I will admit, the place has plenty of quirk.

Besides that though, the bar itself has a landmark quality with its charming interior and the food is actually very good. The curries can be a bit strange occasionally, but the burgers are unbelievably delicious. I will drive out of my way for a Guinness & Gouda burger, so don't write this place off. Drop in for a cozy Irish meal, and remember that The Tipperary Inn is a bit of a Lakewood institution--it's had its ups and downs.

Lovely atmosphere (which includes super clean bathrooms) and wonderful food--I ordered Poached Eggs with browned rosemary butter, near perfect. And the earl grey-infused chocolate pudding-ish dessert was just heavenly. Careful not to overdo it on chocolate though--it would be easy at this place.

I'll echo all the other service complaints, it's bad. I'm not a huge fan of vegan cuisine (much as I like the idea), so I ordered the richest thing I saw on the menu -- polenta with mushroom gravy & it was pretty darn good. Points for serving beet juice, too.
