Hinode Japanese Restaurant

When my friend suggested a "sushi buffet," my instinctive reaction was immediately one of suspicion. The only decent sushi buffet I've ever tried cost over $30/person so I didn't know what to make of one that only cost about $10/person.

I was pleasantly surprised by Hinode's large assortment and variety of rolls. The best part is that everything was fresh and tasted delicious. Like many previous reviewers have already noted, this is one of Bethesda's best kept secrets.

Another bonus: They serve up authentic green tea.

Domku Bar & Cafe

I had been very excited to try Domku for MONTHS. Since moving from Brooklyn, I've been missing decent Eastern European food. I was all set to try the pierogi, pelmeni, potato pancakes, etc. Unfortunately, when I finally made it there a week ago, they had just switched from their winter menu to their summer menu which consisted of lighter options and small plates. No potato pancakes :-(

womp womp...

I sucked it up and ordered the pâté and pierogi. The pâté was delicious, but the potato pierogi were bland and left me wanting more. For dessert, I tried the bread pudding which was very dry and bland.

I doubt I will return until they bring back their winter menu at the end of the year.

Malaysia Kopitiam

I've been missing decent Asian food beyond words ever since moving to DC. I hate having to travel outside of the DC metro limits just to get some good Korean or Chinese food for a reasonable price. Malaysia Kopitiam did not help in this case.

Judging by the decor and menu items, I could immediately tell the owners were Chinese-Malaysian.

I started off with the roti canai which was good. (I prefer the roti at Penang, but again that would require a trip outside of DC.) Since I was missing my mom's home-cooked meals, I decided to order the steamed fish in soy sauce. (Yes, I can easily make this at home, but the stomach wants what the stomach wants.) The dish was extremely plain. The boneless fish fillet was fresh and nicely cooked, but I would prefer a piece of fish with bones and skin. My boyfriend ordered the curried lamb, but it tasted more like lamb in beef gravy--there was hardly any curry flavor and the sauce was very brown and thick.

I might return to try the noodles, but at least now I know what to stay away from.

This place is PACKED during the lunch rush which is pretty unusual given that it's Bethesda. My first impression of The Perfect Pita was, "Oh, overpriced Hot Pockets." After I tried one for myself, I have to say that a Perfect Pita is WAY above Hot Pockets.

The Brown Bag

My office loves to order lunch from The Brown Bag, and it's easy to see why. Their food items are always fresh. I'm a very picky eater, so if I see any brown in my lettuce or avocado, I immediately pick it out. I always clear my plate when I get food from The Brown Bag.

I recommend the Cobb salad, the Alamo, tuna salad, chicken salad, and cookies.

Don't be misled by their "noodle" bowls--they're actually pasta bowls. As an Asian, I do differentiate between the two.

I work right around the block so I've been curious about this spot. I went in for a pedicure after work one evening. I was in and out in under an hour. I normally prefer my pedi sessions to last a little longer because it means a more thorough job and more massage. However, Kimmie did an adequate job. I would definitely consider returning if I need a pedicure in a short amount of time.

Quick notes: Mani/pedi is $37. A pedicure on its own is $25. They do not accept American Express.

I drink 3-4 cups of coffee a day so you can imagine the damage to my pearly whites in terms of color. I use whitening strips about once a year, but I've been tempted to try in-office whitening for a longer lasting effect. When a deal came up on Bloomspot, I bought it immediately.

When I called to make an appointment, I explained that I was coming from my job in Bethesda and the earliest I could leave work was 5:00 or 5:30. The guy was very nice about taking me at 6:00 even though that's their closing time. However, when I arrived at 5:50, he didn't give me the same color check routine as everyone else described. I could tell he wanted to close up shop soon and get me out of there as soon as he could. He started me off with the finger brush and then handed me the different contraptions.

Yes, the whole procedure is uncomfortable and awkward. Yes, there is constant drooling and you can waste as much tissue as you like, but nothing will stop it.

After my 20 minutes, I could immediately tell my teeth was a shade lighter but that was all. I cannot believe they regularly charge $150 for it. At $29 or $39 each session, I would go back, but definitely not at $150.

This is a terrific lunch spot. It only takes a quarter of a chicken and some meringue to brighten up a tough day at work.

Their chicken is tender and seasoned perfectly. I was excited to see that they offer platanos maduros as a side. Unfortunately, the plantain that ended up on my plate wasn't ripe and I prefer my maduros very sweet and soft.

A pizzeria/liquor store combo? I'm not going to complain when they carry a good selection of wine with prices starting at only $7. The staff is also very friendly. Worth a stop in if you're in the area and searching for wine, beer, or liquor.

Out of the handful of Safeway's I've ever stepped foot into, this is definitely one of the better ones. The aisles are wide, the shelves are organized, and there's a large deli counter with hot soup and sandwiches... The staff can definitely be improved. I really don't like to get yelled at by a cashier for putting the basket on the conveyor belt.
