I don't consider myself a coffee connoisseur (I don't particularly care for Intelligentsia coffee), and am fine drinking most any iced coffee as long as it has a lot of sugar and ice.  However, I have to say that the iced coffee I had at Cafe Dulce was damn delicious.  That is something I rarely say about coffee.  I can't recall exactly when I got, but it was similar to the Vietnamese style coffee but not as strong.  I think it was their dulce Latte, but I'll have to check the next time I'm in the area.  It took a while for them to make, but it was worth the wait.  It was smooth and sweet, just right.  I didn't have to add sugar like I usually do, nor was it too sweet.  I ordered the regular bc it was pretty expensive for a cup, but I was bummed I didn't orde th large after tasting it.  We also got a couple of pastries, including one spiraling bun that was green, but I don't recall anything about them.  I think they were average, but the coffee.....get the iced coffee!

I was suprised to really enjoy food from this nondescript truck.  Also known as Neri's, the truck serves filipino food for a good price.  The tocino burger was delish - reminded me of Taiwanese sausage in a hamburger patty form.  It was pretty large, too.  We also got the Crispy Lechon, which came with garlic fried rice.  At first, I thought it was regular fried rice until I took a bite.  Garlic makes a huge difference - I'm going to do that at home!  The pork itself was good, but I didn't really care much for the slaw.  I didn't eat the shrimp balls but my friend thought they were good deal.  This is not for the health conscious!

Cash only.

Cozy wine bar that's within walking distance to the metro.  A friend and I ordered the pork bruschetta (very tasty) and the mac 'n cheese, which was also very good.  We each got a couple of glasses of wine.  I ordered from the dessert menu wines - the Quady Elysium Black Muscat and a port.  The black muscat was delicious - it was a dark muscat.  I've only had the syrupy colored muscats, and I definitely preferred this one as the consistency was more like wine than syrup, though it was quite sweet.  My friend got one of the reds, and I convinced him to get the Black Muscat, so I could drink a bit more of it.  I'm going to try to make it to their happy hour sometime.

Decor of the place is modern and comfy.  The majority of the tables are surrounded by couches/comfy seating, so it's great for groups.  I went for Happy Hour, which wasn't quite so happy for me as the menu is kind of tricky unless you are fluent in Korean.  Note that on the menu (see pic), it says 50% off for Happy Hour and below it is a list of items.  I did not realize this was a list of items not included in Happy Hour, which is A LOT.  Basically, all alcohol aside from soju, 720 ml bottles of beer, and sake, are not included in their Happy Hour special, which runs every day from 6-9 p.m.  Glad I only ordered one cocktail, which was only $7 anyway.

We ordered the Agedashi tofu, a fried chicken plate, and some egg/fish soup.  Don't bother with the soup, which was similar to the kind of soup you get for free in Chinese Restaurants.  However, the tofu was my favorite!  The sauce was delicious and it came with several large pillowy pieces.  The fried chicken plate was large, too - it had maybe 13 chunks of fried chicken covered in terikyaki and mayo sauce.  Yum.  It was def too much food for two people.  It made me feel better about their somewhat high prices (near the $15 range per dish).

Another bonus is that they show a variety of current Korean videos on a large wall!  Way better than watching some stupid sports game!  :)

I came here for the lunch specials.  However, the lunch special and price depends on what day you come in.  When I came, there was no $7.99 chicken cutlet special.   I ordered a small chicken cutlet with udon for about $9.99.  I love their salad dressing, which was a sort of Miso dressing.  They also give you unlimited cabbage (the dressing is in a bottle on your table) "refills."   The katsu was crispy and good.  My friend ordered the Cordon Bleu special, which I think was also $9.99.  It was fairly large and dense.  My friend enjoyed it, though it was definitely different from my regular cutlet, as it has a cream filling along with pieces of ham.  Service was good, too.  Parking sucks, though, since it's right next to super crowded Kobawoo House.

I am greatly disappointed with my online shopping experience at Kith.  I purchased two pairs of their very popular Asics Salmon Toes and received a confirmation email on 9/30/11.  My credit card was then charged over $300 the next day for the items.  About two weeks pass, and nothing.  I email them on 10/12 and get the response that someone will be looking into it.  Again, nothing.  I email once more a week later with no response.  I then post on their twitter account and email on 10/26 complaining about their lack of customer service.  I finally get a response saying that she thought they were shipped out already.  She then tells me that they only have one pair left (not two as I had ordered) and sends them on on 10/27.  Yes, this is almost ONE MONTH after I paid for them.  She then tells me that someone will be returning a pair and will tell me the condition of them when they arrive.

I still hear nothing back, so I email her on 11/13.  No response.  I email again on 11/15 and get a response the next morning (I was told she never received the email).  All the email said was that the customer did not end up returning the shoes and a sorry for my inconvenience.  That was it.   No mention of refunding my $134...nothing.   I could not believe it.

I have never encountered such horrible customer service and lack of response from a company in a very long time and contemplated filing a formal complaint with the BBB, which I will do if I do not receive my refund in a timely manner.  It is now 6 weeks since I purchased items from them that they are finally coming to the conclusion that I will not be receiving my entire order.  The woman at customer service was apologetic but unfortunately that really isn't enough.  There was no offer of a discount or future discount, etc....basically things that other companies with customer service skills offer customers when they screw something up.   I like to be supportive of small businesses, but I am shocked that a company in this day and age handles their customers like this.  Just because you sell exclusive items that people camp out for doesn't give you the right to ignore emails and keep someone's money for six weeks.   They don't even have a phone number online so you can call to follow up - what business does not post a customer service phone number online?

I am REALLY disappointed and pissed off.  UPDATE - I was told on 11/16 that my refund would be processed and that I would receive an email.  As of 11/18, I have received nothing.  Okay, I finally received a refund on 11/21!

Gobi Mongolian BBQ

I didn't have any expectations of Gobi but ended up very pleased with my meal.  It was really crowded, but only bc I was there the night before our Groupon was ending.  The place is also pretty small and the layout is not so smart.  There is no space for a line of people trying to get their food - a long line ends up forming near the area where servers need to get napkins/utensils for the tables and wraps around towards the bathroom.  If there aren't a lot of people, this isn't a problem.

I've been to other Mongolian BBQ places, but this was the first that had such a large selection of fresh veggies, including a few different types of squash (and one of my favorites, butternut squash, in thin slices), snap pea pods, mushrooms, water chestnuts, chinese broccoli, etc.  I also liked their selection of sauces.  I put at least three scoops of garlic and at least three scoops of Korean BBQ sauce in mine and it came out well seasoned.

A server also brings you some bread, which I thought was a bit weird bc I don't find bread and mongolian bbq noodles go well together.  Maybe it's for ppl who don't get any noodles at all.  Anyway, the trick is the smash your meat and veggies down as much as you can and then pile on the noodles.  And don't be fooled by the meat - it shrinks to like 10% of its original size.  You know you've been successful when you have a plate with a mound of food on it.  I had enough for three meals.  I first thought $13 was too expensive for this type of food, but considering the selection and amount, it turned out to be a good deal fo rme.  I needed two of the Chinese cartons to take my leftovers in.  They also charge you $1 or $1.50 when you take leftovers to go, so if you want to be environmentally friendly and save some money, bring your own tupperware  for any leftovers.

This new burger bar is located next to Beauty Bar - you can't really see the neon sign bc it is slanted at a weird angle.  Plus the place really looks like a regular bar rather than a restaurant at night.

Burgers are all $7 each - we got the Pork Belly burger and the Egg burger.  I liked mine better, mainly bc it had teriyaki sauce.  The patties of these burger are not very thick like some other places, so my friend was not completely full after finishing his.  It does come with a super soft bun and lots of toppings.  Anyway, the egg burger was good but I wouldn't call it amazing.  The pork belly (basically thick bacon on top of burger) was also good second.  We also ordered jazz fries ($4), which are garlic fries with gravy and "crack sauce".  I couldn't figure out what was in the crack sauce, other than some type of mayo and red pepper.  It's sweet (does not taste like Thousand Island) and really good.  Ask for a side of it bc the fries come with only a sprinkle of the sauce.  Fries are also on the thick side and a bit soggy (maybe from the gravy?) - I also couldn't taste any garlic on them.

Service was pretty bad as we tried flagging down our waitress numerous times for things.  Though there were several servers, ours looked the busiest and was always helping one table or another.  She was really nice, despite the craziness of everything.  However, once we ordered, the food came out pretty quickly.

Overall, the food was good and not very expensive.  They also have a fairly wide selection of beers as well as flavored sake/soju.  Music is loud and the place is very dark.  We sat near the outside area so we could watch the craziness that is Hollywood.  **Word of caution - DO NOT park at the meters on the street after 6 p.m.  We saw a bunch of people not only get tickets but also get towed!

Update - 10/11/2011 13 photos
Came back for another DineLA lunch ($28 pp), two years later, and the place was packed on a weekday.  I liked my first DineLA experience here two years ago better as the food seemed tastier and more filling. Service was okay, though our server was nice enough.  We ordered:

-Heirloom Tomato Soup - This portion was quite small (smaller than a regular order of soup) but delicious.  My favorite tomato soup ever.  It also came with a piece of flat crouton with cherry tomato halves.  Delicious.
-Italian Prosciutto and Burrata Salad  with Micro Arugula and Old Balsamic - Another small dish but beautifully presented.  Can't go wrong with burrata and prosciutto!
-Halibut - This was a nice piece of fish cooked well.  This came with a really delicious piece of Shrimp Mousse in Crispy Shredded Phillo.  This was my friend's favorite part of the meal.
-Potato Gnocchi  w/ Veal Ragout - Not a very filling dish (rather small) and the flavors were a bit bland.
-Chocolate Bar - Yum!  This was a decadent chocolate dessert with three different layers of chocolate - two creamy and one hard.  This is one to be shared with someone else.
-Lime Cheesecake - I didn't like this one very much as it was extremely sour.  I couldn't taste much cheesecake as it was very light and fluffy.

I ran into another friend dining there, who paid the extra $5 for the Stick Toffee Pudding Cake.  No one cared much for it as it reminded us all of a fruit cake!  DineLA is definitely a good value for this restaurant, though still pricey for lunch.  Expect to spend 1.5 hours to 2 hours for lunch here.

Spago's is generally out of my league budget-wise, but I was able to finally dine here for lunch during dineLA for a mere $26 pp!  What a deal!  We were seated outside, which was great bc it was  nice day and was quieter than the inside.  The place was hopping for lunch!  I loved the bread. A breadman (at least, that's what I call him) came around often with a tray of different bread to choose from.  I liked the flat, crunchy pieces (tasted like cheese crackers) the best; next was the sourdough.  I ate way too much and could hardly touch my main course.  We ordered from the 3-course prix fixe menu, which they altered slightly from the first week:

-Heirloom Tomato Soup - I generally don't like tomato soup, but this was thick, sweet and delicious!  The waiter poured it from a teapot into a heated bowl, so the soup stayed warm throughout.
-Proscuitto and Burrata Mozzarella - Very good - the burratta was creamy and smooth. It also came with yummy roasted pears, which went well with everything.
-Wood Oven Roasted Poussin - The plate was also warm.  Chicken was tender and came with a nice crispy skin.  However, it was nothing fantastic.
-Pan Roasted Alaskan Halibut - The halibut was super white and flaky.  Though it was a thick piece, it was cooked well so it wasn't dry.
-Apple Caramel Upside Down Cake - This didn't come with vanilla bean ice cream, but a sort of champagne-tasting sorbet instead.  The outside was crisp, and the whole thing was not heavy at all.
-Chocolate Purse - I have no idea how they made this, but it was basically a bunch of chocolate in a thin wafer purse-shaped cookie (see pic).  It was really way too much dark chocolate, but was good for the first few bites before becoming too overwhelming.  It came with a little scoop of vanilla bean ice cream.

The third dessert option was titled "cookies," which I had no interest in ordering until I saw another table get it.  In face, I heard a woman at another table change her dessert to the cookie tray, too, once she saw it.  The cookies came out on a tray and looked like nothing that ever came out of my oven!  I wonder how they tasted....

I have to say that I wasn't blown away by the food, but I did notice the attention to detail that you don't get at a lot of other restaurants.  Our server didn't wait on us excessively - in fact, I felt slightly ignored (probably bc we were only ordering the prix fixe menu while the table next to us was ordering a $200+ lunch), but overall I cannot complain about the service.

The burgers here are pretty good.  I was surprised that $5 got me such a big hamburger.  They come on a brioche bun, too.  I got the Classic, which I could barely finish, and my friend got the Office, which came with caramelized onions, bacon, and blue cheese.  I also got a side of house cut fries for $2.50, which are similar to In 'n Out fries.  Overall, a good place to get a quick and hearty bite to eat!
