Chego

Dear Chego,

I am so in love with you.

I dont know where to start. Prime Rib Rice, Pork Belly Bowl, Ooey Gooey Fries, the menu goes on and on with delicious Korean fusion dishes.

However, there is one item that stands out.

Perhaps my favorite dish by far would have to be the Ghetto Malasadas. Yes, the deep fried donut has made its SoCal arrival presented by Chego. This warm puff of heaven that is covered in powdered sugar is the closest, if not exact, intepretation of the Polynesian pastry.  I highly recommend going to Chego on nights when this dessert is available since it is on the special's menu.

Otherwise, this place is probably your best bet for a late night food fix. And by late night food, you really can NEVER go wrong with Chego. This place is the real deal when it comes to good cheap food.

Love,
Patrick

Dear MILK,

You are perhaps my favorite go-to place to have a simple meal.

Upon entering, you are instantly captivated by the large array of ice cream and sweets. DO NOT GET DISTRACTED. First, save your appetite and get something savory.

Usually, what I like to do is get the special for the day. Last time, I tried the Monday special which was a Mexican Chicken Salad. Topped with guacamole and a side of fried chicken, I would definitely recommend ordering it.

For this visit, I switch it up by ordering the Media Noche Sandwich. If you like pulled pork and some Cuban spice in your life, or you need some spice, I suggest ordering it. It's pretty damn good considering it was $12 dollars.

To finish my meal I tried my first grasshopper ice cream sandwich.

A scoop of mint chocolate chip ice cream, sandwiched between two mint macaroons, with one side dipped in chocolate....

If that ice cream sandwich doesn't convince you, then you are lost.

Love,
Patrick

Dear Malo,

You are indeed malo.

First, I'm sorry to say this, but the service sucked. I went for Mexican Independence day dinner with a group of friends, only to be ignored for 30 mins. Our food did not arrive until another 30 mins later.

Despite the service, I would say the food was alright. What I order wasnt too extraordinary for Mexican food. I had somesort of taco and tostada. Seeing that I dont remember shows how much of an impact the food made on me. Oh well. The only thing I liked the most was the guacamole with the crispy and soft tortilla chips. The soft tortilla chips were something new that I have not tried before. Unfortunately, I had to pay for that. Maybe I'm asking for a lot, but shouldn't most Mexican places have chips and dip for free? I'm just saying.

Sincerely,
Patrick

Dear The Apple Pan,

You serve, what I believe, are one of the best burgers in LA. Now that I think about it, you probably rank in my top 5 best/favorite burger places.

Fortunately, I went at 10 in the evening in order to avoid all the wait and lines. I ordered a steak burger and fries. The size of the burger was perfect considering that I was not that hungry and I was in a terrible mood. Leave it to a pint size burger to cure my anger. To finish my meal, I had a warm apple pie with ice cream. Mmm pie. That is the one dessert I cannot resist.

Considering I am a poor college student, the price was perfect. Also, I am a big fan of old diners/los angeles landmarks, so the evening's meal was a real treat.

Sincerely,
Patrick

Dear The Counter,

Build your own burgers? Genius. Unfortunately, this was not my first time to dine, but still, another experience worth documenting.

I ordered the Market Burger, which was the specialty burger of the month. Whats special about these burgers is that they are made from local produce and goods. It is the counter's attempt to promote local business. Pretty cool, right? So,  if you have no clue as to what to order or build, I suggest picking the special. The specials are usually one of kind and pretty interesting.

Otherwise, this encounter at the counter, was not cool. The wait for my food was roughly 25 minutes. For lunchtime, yes that may seem expected, but if the people who arrived later received their food before me, then thats a problem.

Aside from the wait, its a nice lunch time place. Check it out.

Sincerely,
Patrick

Dear Tarern,

First, I would like to say that I love your atmosphere. Once I walk through your doors, I feel like I  emerged myself into a Jane Austen novel. From the entrance, to the bar, then the main dinning room, the setting is like a moment in time. The wingchairs and crown molding, has this old English feel mixed with a touch of steam punk.

Now for the food. I went last week for mother's day brunch. It was delicious. I had the brisket hash with fried eggs and horseradish cream. Everyone from my family was munching off my plate. Of course I didn't mind, but damn, I couldn't help but get stingy about it. It was damn good.  The potatoes were lightly baked with the most tender brisket accompanying it. Not to mention the egg and toast with the horseradish cream.

The price is reasonable. I would dish out money for the place. Ambiance and good food are incentives to spend money. Also, parking is really easy. The only thing is, watch out for those parking signs. They are worded tricky. One time I got a ticket.

Sincerely,
Patrick

Mitchell's Ice Cream

Dear Mitchell's Ice Cream,

What can I say, you are a beautiful thing.

Last night I had a double scoop of Ube and Claire's Pie ice cream in a waffle cone. First of all, if I may say, that Ube ice cream was a blast from my past. I'm sure most Filipinos are familiar with having to eat this ice cream when growing up. If anything, Mitchell's was a staple in the freezer. Yes to the Ube flavor if you want to try something new or relive the past. As for the Claire's Pie, that flavor is genius. Composed of caramel, almonds, toffee, and other sweets, this flavor has everything. I definitely recommend it!

The only downside to you is the wait and parking. The parking is very limited, seeing that it is on a busy street and that the wait can pile out. Thankfully, it's pretty organized since you have to pick up a number and wait. But hey, waiting is the best part. There are so many choices that you need some time to think about what you really want.

Fab Hot Dogs

Dear Fab Hot Dogs,

What can I say? You are amazing.

Now I am a hot dog kind of guy. If it were up to me, I could eat them all day. More so, I can eat you, Fab Hot Dogs, ALL day.

Today I had the Tucson Dog. This bacon wrapped hot dog was embellished with grilled onions, jalapenos, pinto beans, tomatoes and topped with mayo, ketchup, and mustard. And what a better way to accompany this meal but with tater tots? No one can deny tater totes. These totes are fried to perfection with a generous amount of peppered seasoning. Gah, my mouth is watering again.

Although you are perfection, at times I find it somewhat bothersome to hit you up. Your location is obscure and the parking is inconvenient. Limited parking on a busy street makes it a drag, and at times the back lot is filled. Also, in regards to lunchtime, you are not the best place to be. It seems that everyone has a craving for hot dogs from 11am to 2pm. Not a good idea.

All together though, I would like to say thank you Fab for supplying me with delicious hot dogs to satisfy my appetite.

Sincerely,
Patrick

Dear Crumbs Bake Shop,

You create delicious pieces of artwork. At first, it may seem a little daunting to have to choose from so many aesthetically pleasing cupcakes, but once you settle on one, you can't help but want to try them all!

Today I had the Blueberry Swirl. Everything about it was orgasmic. The soft cupcake with the blueberry filling and topping was amazing. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Patrick
