Proctor Sports Cards Etc

This is definitely THE PLACE for card games.

I have been going to Proctor Sports Cards for my Magic: The Gathering habit since Middle School (When they were actually located on Proctor Street, and then moved into the Tacoma Mall).

The staff is friendly, and will be able to help you out quickly. Many of these types of stores will say "Ummm, I am not sure. Come back another time." Here, you can ask them anything about inventory and will either know off the top of their head, or be able to quickly look it up for you.

The store is separated into two main parts... the sports section, and the "nerd" section. And, you feel comfortable being here.

---------

Bottom Line: Awesome people, and they have what you want.

This is the absolute best restaurant Tacoma. When I was old enough to drive, this was definitely at least a weekly visit. I became somewhat of a regular at this Chinese food joint.

If you end up going here, here is what I recommend:

1 - Order off of the combo menu. If you are there for lunch, order the #1. If you are there for dinner, order the #2 (the dinner and lunch combo menus are different).  The combo meals come with WonTon soup (I have never had better WonTon soup) and Tea. Be prepared to take leftovers home if you don't have a huge appetite (Lunch is under $6 and dinner is under $8).

2 - If you are not in the mood for a combo meal, order the Pork Fried Rice and Egg Rolls.  Since you are ordering exact items, it is made to order. It seems a bit "fresher" than what is served on the combo plates. These eggrolls are large and DELICIOUS (Just typing about them is making my mouth water. I need to go down to Tacoma soon).

They also have family-style dining. I am opposed to this just on the fact that there is ALWAYS that one person who will take all of the good stuff, and not touch the other.

I will agree with the previous reviewer that this is definitely not the cleanest restaurant. You can see it on the lazy-susans on the table, and the tea pots. But, the dining room is currently being remodeled, so I am hoping they will keep things nice.

--------------------

Bottom Line: Eat here... say "Number Two, please."

I think the only thing that saves this place for me is the Sunset Dinners.

If you head there before 6pm, you get Soup or Salad, Meal, and Dessert for under $15. The choices change seasonally, so check ahead before going.

The wait staff is friendly. But, just pray that your server will not also be in charge of a large group at the same time... because you will be lost in the mix. This has happened two out of the last three times I went here.

I have never been too impressed with the menu here but, they serve a pretty good steak.

---------

The Bottom Line:  Come here for the Sunset Dinner, and you will love it.  Come any other time, and you will have an okay meal.

When you head to CS, do a quick survey of the New Stock bin, then head upstairs to shuffle through the Skufs and Discount CDs. You may find exactly what you wanted for $4, rather than buying a new copy for $14. ALSO - towards the back on the first floor, they have a "Priced to Move" section. There might be something you would want to add to your collection for cheap.

The staff here is okay... sometimes they will welcome you on the way in, and other times they will pretend you don't exist. But, overall they seem knowledgeable and will be able to point you in the right direction if you approach them at the front counter.

After making your purchase, check out the flyer/newspaper area on your way out.  This is a good place to puck up a copy of Exotic Underground as well as flyers for upcoming local shows.

---------

Bottom line: Large selection, knowledgeable staff, good amount of skufs and discount cds.

Ashton Court Apartments

3 star rating

I lived in Ashton Court from July 2005-June 2006.  It is less than a mile away from the main part of the Central Washington University campus, and literally right across the street from the football field.

I lived in a two-story townhouse-style apartment with my roommate.  One and a half bathrooms, large kitchen, and a dishwasher were some of the highlights.

The rent is REALLY cheap.  We were paying less than $600 a month.

So far, it seems like a good deal. But the biggest downside to this entire place is the walls.  If your neighbors speak in a normal voice, you will be able to hear the entire conversation on your side.  If they decide to have a party, forget about having quiet time, because it will not happen.

The landlord was always nice, when you could get ahold of her.  She never seemed to hold her posted office hours, and was hard to track down most of the time.

---------------

Bottom line: Cheap rent... close to campus... great for two people... If your next door neighbors are loud, this will ruin alot of your college times.

Old Country Buffet - CLOSED

I don't know why so many people are bad-mouthing this place!  What do you want to eat?  You can find it (or something similar) at the Old Country Buffet in Shoreline.

Positive notes:
- I have been to many Buffets in Washington, and this is by far one of the cleanest.

- Call ahead and see if they are serving Steak.  'Cause, if it is Steak Night, that is a good time to go.  You wouldn't think of Old Country Buffet as a good steak house, but it definitely works.  Best part of all, you can always go back for another cut.

- One Stop Shop.  There is not an extra fee for beverage or dessert, as some buffets.  Pay the man at the front, then stuff your face.

- The Dessert Bar.  Many selections.  I recommend the cheesecake with the cherry topping for first course dessert,  then an ice cream cone for the ride home.

- The Industrial light fixtures.  Seriously.  Go there, and check out the TOTALLY out of place light fixtures (I love em).  Also check out the door handles to the banquet room (they are big spoons).

- The decor.  Norman Rockwell prints everywhere.

The Cons:
- As a general rule... never EVER go into a bathroom at an Old Country Buffet.  This location is no different.  Go before you come,  and hold it until you get home.

- The other people.  This is most likely the reason the OCB gets a bad rap.  Many people don't have common courtesy when you go here.  They see the food they want, and will actually knock you out of the way for it.  EXAMPLE: Last time I went here (about 2 days ago), there was a woman, in her 30's, sitting in the dining room.  She saw something on her mother's plate and began yelling to the buffet line:  "MOM!! MOMMM!!! WHERE'D YOU GET THAT BACON?!?"

- The lousy music.  Ever been stuck in an elevator for over an hour?  The music from the overhead speakers will make you have flashbacks.

---------------

The Bottom Line: Come ON people... it is a buffet. What do you expect?  It is good.

The Dreaming

On the quest to find Magic: The Gathering cards in Seattle, I (along with three co-workers) decided to check out The Dreaming.

Even though we found a very limited supply of Magic cards here (one box mixed with 10th Edition and Lorwyn boosters), the clerk (possibly owner) was very helpful in aiding our quest to find the cards, suggesting other stores nearby.

I think the best part of the whole trip was the welcoming atmosphere the store offered. There is a large table near the front where the fellas and I opened our boosters, traded cards, and talked a while before exiting the store.

Bottom line: Great nerdy store filled wall-to-wall with comics and references.
