I've been a client of Mishi for close to 3 years, and I'm happy to say that her talents have totally improved my self esteem and changed my outlook on my appearance. I've never been good with hair, and she always manages to cut/color my hair in a style that's totally adorable and in style, but not hard for my hairbrush-incompetent hands to manage.

Sola Studios is a wonderful location for her and her incredible skills... Easy to get to and the Morphic space is very comfortable and fresh. She's on time and only uses gentle plant-based products on her client's tresses. Oh, and she uses Square which means she accepts every kind of credit card AND will email you a reciept. Win!

I've recommended at least 100 people to Mishi and plan on recommending her to MILLIONS more! Go to Morphic... you will not regret it!

--

PS) Here's an excerpt of my review of her from a year ago (almost to the day!)... before she opened Morphic. Again, you just gotta go see her!

"4/15/2010: I have tried a couple of different stylists, but Mishi has been my main girl for about a year and a half now. Seriously, she's absolutely AMAZING. I've never gotten so many compliments about my hair as I have since I've been seeing her!! She's taken it from long, to shoulder length, to crazy short, to chin-length in all sorts of brownish-red tones. No lies, I have never walked away from her unsatisfied. A cut from Mishi will ALWAYS make me feel like the most beautiful thing in SF. :) "

So not blown away by this place.

I took my team to lunch at the end of January to wish a coworker good luck on her new venture. (I know, I'm wayyyy behind on my Yelp reviews) Anyways, when we arrived, the hostesses were very welcoming, but we still had to wait 10 minutes for our table even though we'd made reservations. Unfortunately, our wait was very uncomfortable as the restaurant has no room whatsoever to accommodate the crowded lunch hour.

We were seated upstairs in the furthest, most forgotten table in the restaurant, and felt rushed to order drinks and appetizers. The food on it's own was pretty decent... We started with the salumi plate which was very tasty had some nice cured meats. If I remember correctly, for lunch someone ordered a lamb ragu and someone else tried the butternut squash ravioli (AMAZING!). Our third diner opted for the hangar steak, and I, for some ungodly reason, chose this chicken salad which ended up being a huge disappointment.

Unfortunately the service is what killed it for me... Once we'd placed our orders, our server all but forgot about us for the rest of the meal. I had to flag a different server down to get all of our drinks refilled, and ended up having to ask for the check. Once he took my credit card I had to wait another 10 minutes to get it back... and by then I was so far over the whole experience it wasn't even funny.

Sorry Perbacco. Better luck next time... if there is one.

My first experience with Patxi's was actually in my office. A few coworkers had ordered a pie for lunch (PS - they deliver to the FiDi! #win) and offered me a bite. You'll notice I said BITE and not slice, but that was all it took. I was hooked. And had to get more of this tomatoey-salty-ooey-gooey magic!

A few weeks later the BF and I popped in for casual dinner before heading to the Fillmore for a concert. We were able to snag PBRs for $1 just by checking in on Yelp (another #win), and when our pizza finally arrived we were *very* impressed. Also, everyone on here keeps mentioning their great customer service... that's because it is awesome! Our server was very kind, and if he wasn't in the area other servers dropped by just to make sure we were ok.

Overall I'm a pretty big fan of Patxi's! Would totally recommend them to a friend, and am dreaming of the day they open up an East Bay location. :)

I can't help but be head over heels in love with the Kona Club. The bartenders are cool, the drinks are very authentic and delicious, and the decor is amazing. Makes me feel like I'm in the islands every time I walk through the door! If you're in the area, this is one spot you don't want to miss.

BTW, Angela, Pam and Danny are the bestttttttesttttttttt!

Cupcake Cove

I quickly dropped by Cupcake Cove to pick up a half dozen treats for my coworker's birthday and was, overall, pleased with my experience.

Their selection is on the small side, and I believe they're serving a standard sized cupcake. I did feel that the price was a smidge high ($15 for 6 because of a buy 5 get 1 free deal) considering the cupcakes didn't have a filling or any special decorations. At the same time... rent in the FiDi is expensive, and I'm sure they have bills to pay. :) They also sell cute candles for 25 cents each.

I had the mint chocolate cupcake and was really pleased. The cake was moist and the frosting was not overly sweet or overly minty. We also purchased the lemon cupcake and the chocolate cupcake w/ vanilla frosting. I haven't heard any complaints from my coworkers, so I assume they were delish as well!

Cash only.

Michaels Arts & Crafts

I'm a baker and when I'm in a pinch I can find quite a bit of supplies at Michael's... including cake boxes! Unfortunately they don't branch out beyond the Wilton & Duff Goldman brands of cake decorating tools, but I can't hold that against this particular store as they're a retail chain. Regardless, if you've somehow found yourself without gold luster dust the night before a 50th anniversary cake is due... they're open until 9pm. Head on over!

I haven't done much shopping here for other crafts, but it looks to be pretty well-stocked with scrapbooking, framing, painting, and jewelry-making materials. A huge kid's section too... Over the weekend I saw they had a "Create Your Own Molecule" kit. How many other stores can say they sell a "Create Your Own Molecule" kit??

But with the decent product line and all the time & money I've spent in this particular store, their customer service too poor to be overlooked. Like, I'd almost use a curse-word to describe it, except I swore to myself I'd never curse on Yelp, so I'll let you do it: It's pretty [insert curse word of choice]. Most of us have worked retail at one point or another. We all know it's hard and relatively-unrewarding, and I can imagine that the staff there probably endures some shady clientele. But whatever is going on at that store is no excuse for simply not giving a [insert curse word of choice here too] about the customers who are actually trying to business there.

Grand Lake Theatre

The Grand Lake Theatre is one of my favorite things in the East Bay. Yes it probably could use a bit of TLC here and there, but overall my experience at Grand Lake has always been a wonderful one.

If you're lucky to go to a show playing in the main theater on a Friday or Saturday night, you'll hear the fabulous organ player entertaining the audience before the curtain lifts. And yes... the curtain actually lifts. The overall feel of this theater is very warm, cozy & communal, and is a welcomed breath of fresh air compared to the other "corporate" theaters in the area. To most people I know, "going to the Grand Lake," is much more exciting than simply, "going to the movies."

Also, like Sherilyn's review below me, I do enjoy the owner's occasional use of their marquee to voice their opinions on different political matters. This business is very supportive of its community, and that's a great thing to see.

I'm not an expert in Moroccan cuisine by any means and my trip to Tanjia was my first experience EVER with this style of food. Luckily, I was pleasantly surprised & impressed!

I ate at Tanjia with a group of 10 people in early December and, overall, had a really great time. I thought the food was really yummy and authentic (see disclaimer above), and I was pleased with the selections of wine on the menu. I also was able to try a lot of new dishes, specifically a "Chicken Bastilla" (not sure I spelled that right). According to Wikipedia a Bastilla is an "elaborate meat pie" that plays with a combination of sweet and salty flavors and crisp textures. But I'm sure what they really meant to say is that it's a plate of deliciousness and you should just not worry and eat it. The our shredded chicken stew-like pie was, indeed, dusted with cinnamon and powdered sugar, but the flavors worked really really well and opened my eyes to a new type of culinary style I'd never experienced before.

Other props go to the awesome belly dancer. She pulled the 4 men of our table up and made them dance with her. PRICELESS!

The manager, Carly, is also equally awesome. :)

The one complaint I did have with the restaurant was that the table seemed a bit low. They do have this wonderful mellow vibe going on (see Jess G's review), and the seating definitely plays into that, but my long legs felt very awkward and in the way most of the night. I would recommend not wearing heels if you're on the taller side of life.

Dr. Robertshaw is easily one of THE best chiropractors that I've ever seen in my life. His treatments are incredibly gentle and I leave his office feeling so relaxed and at ease. As others have mentioned, he's also an incredibly smart healer and really does his best to make sure that you're well informed of your condition and it's progression.

Unfortunately I suffer from severe TMJ, and Dr. Robertshaw has been able to help make the pain more manageable. There's very few doctors that will work with TMJ patients, and of the few that do I'd consider him one of the best.

His office manager, Shayna (doubt I spelled that right, sorry!), is also awesome. Though they do not bill insurance, she'll provide you with the right documentation to submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement. She's also very good at getting you in to see the doctor within a reasonable timeframe, and is very welcoming and kind.

Go see Dr. Robertshaw & Shayna! You will not regret it!

Credo

Neighborhood: Financial District

I needed a lunch reservation in the Financial District... on a Friday... during the holidays... for 6 people... with less than 24 hours notice. Insane, right?? Facing the impossible, I bravely dialed number after number fending off many "I'm sorry, we're booked" responses until I stumbled upon Credo.

My weary call was answered by Michael (who has a very charming and cordial phone voice, btw) and instead of shunning me like the rest of the hosts I'd spoken with he worked very hard to accommodate my request and managed to secure us the largest table they had to offer. 5-star service right there.

Unfortunately, that's where the good impression ended. My party arrived at Credo, slightly early, and we were not greeted by a single employee for 10 minutes. People saw us standing there, but nobody attempted to make eye contact with me or offer a, "I'll be with you in a second," smile at all. I do admit they were very busy, but employees did see us standing there and nobody made the effort to make us feel welcomed.

Finally the hostess ran over up (I don't remember her name), and I had to stop and inform her that we had arrived. Another 10-ish minutes of waiting ensued. However, the nifty selection of quotes on the wall kept us occupied...

I was very pleased with our seating arrangements, as we were given a very large & comfortable square table that was nestled in a little side area of the restaurant. It was near the open kitchen, but it still felt private none the less. We also didn't have to shout at each other over the noise of the restaurant. Points for that.

Complimentary olives & bread were yummy... the olives were pitted (YAY!) and had a nice spicy kick to them. I wasn't a fan of the gnocchi I ordered. The portion seemed awfully small compared to what everyone else received and it was very very bland and very very oily. Maybe that's what I get for ordering gnocchi tho?

The rest of my table ordered lamb paninis (which are actually more like lamburgers...haha), chicken paninis, and a salmon salad. Nobody complained about their food at all, and everyone else seemed to have a reasonable portion. It was just me that got the short end of the stick!

Also, our table was tended to by two very attentive waiters. I don't remember their names either, but they did a great job as my water glass was never empty.

Soooo 3 stars? 4 stars? I'd say they're right in between.
