Harkins Theater

Category: Cinema

4 star rating
 Update - 7/29/2009
A-ha! I was right! As it turns out, the screen has about a million little holes so that it won't move around with the air. There are some bolts or something that this screen is attached to. The part of these bolts that faces the audience is painted black so that it won't reflect light. All except ONE. The one I saw. The one that bothered me to no end. They looked into it because of me, thankyouverymuch. The manager called me and said he couldn't believe no one had said anything before, thanked me for pointing it out and sent us some free tickets. You're welcome. My critical eye is always available.
-Groan- . . . .  if only someone would open a Harkins in Vail.

Checking the listings for still-available Harry Potter tickets went something like this . . . . sold out, sold out, sold out, sold out, sold out, oh wait . . . Harkins Theater? Oh what street? Oh yeah, are these the new theaters around Irvington? Why isn't it sold out there?!?! I concluded that the reason was that the theaters are too far (because I assume that everyone starts off driving from my house). Buying tickets was a breeze. There was NO ONE in line. NO ONE. (since I didn't want to pay the "inconvenience fee" online)
We situated ourselves and I promptly sent my husband to get the concession goodies. Had I known about the loyalty cup, I would have told him. I am just now finding out about this. Thanks, Jennifer! I don't know how long the lines were, but he wasn't gone very long. The theater is spacious, new, great sound and there are screens hanging down in the corridors showing previews. "A theater of the future" was what I was calling it.
I have one major gripe, though. During the previews, I noticed a small white dot on the top/middle of the giant screen. I figured this would disappear once the feature began, but that wasn't so. It looked like a tiny rip in the screen. I can't imagine what else it could have been. Something from the projector? I saw it in theater 1, by the way, in case you want to see for yourself. Anyway, this dot pestered me throughout the movie. You know once you see something that bothers you and you can't ignore it try as you might? Yeah, that's how it was. What was worse is that sometimes it looked as though it might have been part of the movie . . . . a sparkling in Luna's glasses (sneakoscopes, for fellow geeks, er, um, fans), a star in a dark sky, an adornment in someone's hair. You get the gist. I hope they fix this because it is very, very distracting. Otherwise, this place it great. Far for me, but great.
I can only hope that with the opening of yet another theater, some other films - not just blockbusters- will be available to us somewhere other than in The Loft. It would be a great change to be able to view a nice indy flick in a state-of-the art theater. Well . . .  one can dream.

***** I didn't use it, but this place has a "playcenter" daycare. Yes. It. Does. It's for kids 3-8 and is $6 per child. They have a little video on their website. I would have loved something like this before I actually had kids because I hated to hear someone else's crying/screaming kids while I was trying to watch a movie and now that I have kids because I still hate to hear someone else's crying/screaming kids while trying to watch a movie. (as we've only taken ours to age appropriate movies and they haven't cried/screamed). Because of that, we've missed out at loads of movies we've wanted to see and have to wait until my parents are in town or it comes out in DVD. This playcenter deal sounds very convenient.

 Update - 7/14/2009
I spent my birthday here and it was a-maz-ing. I'll start off by saying that I don't think I'd ever had a meal that lavish, but it was all soooooo delicious, I'd eat that way again . . . much to my waistline's dismay.
Let me list off the things we had, because if I get into everything I want to say, I'll exceed the character limits (I know because this is my edited, condensed attempt at this review)
- appetizer: seared scallops with summer succotash. Scallops are good anyway, but this "succotash" made them way better. I kept picking at the corn and came this close (making "little fingers") to licking the plate.
- bread with dipping oil and salt. There's something about this salt. I love it. There was a point in the evening when I was just dipping my finger into the salt. Really.
- amuse bouche: crostini with goat cheese and tomato. We're suckers for goat cheese as it is, so this was a great, tasty little bite. The crostini was very nice and crisp which is always good to have with creamy cheese.
- starter: tomato soup with a bleu cheese puff. Oh. My Goodness. This soup felt like a warm hug with each spoonful. I probably would have been fine with a huge bowl of this. Plus the little cheese puff in the soup, oozed out cheesy goodness when we poked at it with our spoons. Again, I could have licked this bowl.
- entree: salt crusted chicken for two with fries and vegetables. This takes an hour, so you might want to call ahead if you don't want to wait. I had a lovely wait enjoying food and conversation with my husband. Then the entree came out and all conversation ceased. It turned more into something like "nom, nom, munch, yum, yum" style of noise. The chicken was so moist and tasty and the skin was nice and golden with that yummy salt. We got some ketchup and a vinegar aioli for the fries. The vegetables were some super crisp green beans and carrots. Seriously, I don't know how one manages to thoroughly cook green beans and have them that crisp at once.
- dessert: flourless chocolate cake and a trifle. Dessert was delicious but I have to admit that I didn't have as much as I would have liked. By this time I felt like I had food stacked up to behind my eyeballs, so try as I might, I just couldn't eat more.
My husband still had coffee after this. I don't know how he did it. He didn't look like he was wearing elastic pants, but he must have been either that or those pregnancy bands. (yes, I'm getting a little chuckle at my husband's expense)
Yes. We. Ate. All. That. OK, we did bring half our entree home, but we tried. Whatever I write won't do justice to just how tasty everything was, so the best I can do is tell you that if you haven't already gone, go. Plus, they are the nicest, most genuine staff I've encountered in a long time. We loved the way they all worked as a team. I mean all the servers help at each table. They won't pass by and not refresh your water, ask how you're doing, or remove a plate if you aren't "their table". Brian, the owner, came over several times to chat and make sure that everything was well. This meant a lot to us because he, his wife and the whole staff were clearly busy yet they made us feel taken care of. They never once looked rushed or stressed. I love coming here. I love the feeling that if I were to ever open a restaurant, this would be exactly the way I would want people to feel at my place. The staff is so likable and real that you can't help but wish them every success. Thank you, Brian and Sandy for making our evening lovely, memorable and most of all, delicious!

Because of the reviews, I just HAD to try this place. I'm really glad I did. I was a little shocked to find out that this place was next to a strip mall. It's much smaller that I'd expected. My first word of advice would be to definitely make a reservation. We didn't and there were no tables when we got here. They were nice enough to have us start off at the bar and moved us to a table when one was ready.
When we got our drinks ( a Nimbus beer for him and a pink lemonade [rose wine, lemonade and sparkling wine] for me) they brought out some country olives with orange zest and bread with dipping oil and salt. They were certainly busy and the place was packed, but we felt taken care of and didn't feel like we were waiting around for service. My husband's only complaint was that the beer wasn't as cold as he likes it to be. He said it was warm several times, so I knew I had to add it into the review.
Our appetizer was baked goat cheese with olive oil roasted tomatoes and olive tapenade. It was a-ma-zing! I love goat cheese as it is, but this was so delicious. All the flavors just went so well together. Yum, I seriously could've eaten a big bowl of that for dinner.
Entrees were Kobe burger w/ frites for him and duck leg confit for me. I tasted the burger and that was some good burger. The fries had herbs on them and were really good too. My duck was super tasty. It had dried raz cherries on it and the combination was delicious! I don't know what raz cherries are, but I want some more.
For dessert we shared adult milk and cookies. They brought out a variety plate of warm cookies (white chocolate, pistacho, chocolate chip and another kind of chocolate chip I just can't remember what it was). Along with the cookies, they serve milk with bourbon. Yes, please.
I had a really good time. Our water glasses were never less than halfway full. Our waitress was nice and had a thorough explanation for anything we asked about on the menu. The way she was explaining some of the wine choices reminded me of a waitress we'd had at North. Only later when I'd handed her a "You've Been Yelped" card did she tell me that she'd also gotten one when she worked at North. I had given her one there too. I thought that was pretty funny.
Their website has a yelp tally and I love that! It's great that a restaurant cares to want non professional restaurant reviewers to be pleased.
Our total came out to $67. $19 of that was for drinks, so I think it was really not all that expensive at all. I have high hopes for this place and wish them all the best of luck. I can't wait to go back and try that chicken. I can't wait to go back . . . period.

We were in the area and decided to stop by Frog & Firkin last evening. The patio was completely full as there was live music, so we had a table inside. Now, did this use to be a house? Does anyone know? Anyway, I digress. I have no complaints about the service. In fact, we had several waitstaff kids come check if we were alright. I had the Hen House sandwich and my husband had the super smothered burger. The food was OK. I wasn't jumping out of my seat, but again, no complaints. Overall, I had a nice time. It's plain to see that it is a great, laid back, hang-out place. I can say with a 100% guarantee that I'm glad there wasn't a Frog & Firkin around my university. I guarantee you that I would have spent waaaaaayyyyyyy too much time (and I'm sure money) there.

In-N-Out Burger

I am forever impressed when I first walk into any In-N-Out. The complete undeviating white and overall look of cleanliness is not lost on me. I've never seen an employee with a huge grease stain on their shirt or apron. All of them look super crisp and freshly pressed, shirts tucked in, black belts, girls with an oversized safety pin holding their apron closed. I couldn't tell you if any of the female employees there have long hair or not since they all have it neatly tucked into their caps. Ah. . . . I love walking into a clean looking place. I realize that a company that goes to those lengths to make sure of their employees appearance, must also be keen on quality.
I gladly ordered my double-double, fries and a coke. (yes, I can actually finish a double- double here. -blushing) You can taste the quality at first bite. Everything tastes fresh and natural. Delicious. No soggy, faded lettuce or frail tomatoes, just fresh, crunchy vegetables. Yummmm . . . then the fries . . . . those little golden sticks of heaven. They feel so airy light but tasty at the same time. My goodness. Just thinking about my meal makes me want to go again. I know I will. Soon.

Ikea

 Update - 7/6/2009
I'd never been to IKEA without my kiddies. I now have to say that I just realized that I don't like my kids.  : P   Yes, I'm kidding. It was just soooo different without them. I didn't have to stop every two minutes and wait for them to be done playing house in each of the displays.
This time around,  I went for "a long desk" and more organization goodies. I have a loft with a pretty long wall, hence the long desk. I wanted it to be able to fit two people. I'd seen some elsewhere but for exceedingly high prices. Well, I found one here. . . . . for less than $100.
Now let me tell you about the legs. We were trying to choose the perfect legs for our desk for quite a while. They all seemed so short. 27 and 1/2 inches to be exact. We were measuring with chairs, pretending to sit down and whatnot. Now, I'd gone equipped with all the measurements I wanted, or that I thought I needed, I just never thought to measure how high my desk was. As it turns out, this is the standard size. Hmm, who would have thought. Once the desk part is on, it doesn't look so low. I thought I'd let you know and save you the embarrassment of having to tell an IKEA worker that all the desks there seemed like they were for little people (which I may or may not have done).
I also left there with several more "organization thingies" Think more containers for the pantry and things for mail. Yay! I am happy. Everything has a place and everything in its place.

Cleaning out the pantry only means one thing . . . a trip to IKEA! Oh, I drool over all their organization section. I dream of a tidy pantry with everything in its own container, stacked and labeled. I bought containers for cereal, flour, sugar, brown sugar, spaghetti, pasta (not long like spaghetti) and rice. Yes, my pantry looks amazing for not a lot of money. Thanks, IKEA.

So we were in Phoenix for the day and had a lot of plans. Thanks to all the places I've read up on here, I thought we'd have a full day of activities and lots of places to go to. I had plans to pop into IKEA for a little while and we ended up spending the bulk of our time there.

    Here's the scenario . . .
    1. we have a house that we've lived in for a few months
    2. we have about a million plans for the house
    3. we don't have a lot of left-over money to do it with

IKEA for us is a life saver. True, you won't buy any sort of heirloom furniture here. If you're looking for that, definitely go elsewhere. But if you want to have a stylishly decorated place, IKEA is a must. Even if you don't buy anything, you get a lot of ideas. I was practically drooling over all their organization choices.
If you have them, bring the kids. There is a play area where you can check them into, but I have to tell you that my kiddies had a blast playing in the second floor. They were pretending that each "room" was theirs and having make-believe dinners, meetings and parties.
I also love that the restaurant charges less on account that people have to clear their own table. I'd like that to be the case everywhere else. I'd happily clear my (and everyone else's) table at other restaurants for a lower price. $.99 kids plate, $.50 coffee? Sign me up!
Overall, I LOVED it. My husband said he felt like sheeple for a while there, but I don't care. I'll take inexpensive, simple and stylish anytime. I also like the whole idea of paying for the plastic bags. I'm writing to the candidates convinced this should be some sort of law.

    Yesterday . . .

my son: Can we go back to IKEA today?
    me: uh, no.
my son: but I need to
    me: you NEED to? why?
my son: I want you to make meatballs but we don't have any flags for them
me: oh. uh, some other day, ok?
my son: ok, but we need them ok, that's what makes meatballs taste good.
    me: (laughing) ok

Zinburger

Category: Burgers

5 star rating
 Update - 7/6/2009
A big portion of my 4th of July evening was spent on the patio at Zinburger. I thought, being a holiday, it wouldn't be so crowded. Apparently, everyone sitting around us received the same email coupon for 25% off the total bill that night and decided to go. (They really did, I kept hearing people saying they had it).
I had a lovely time sitting outside on a hot day sipping wine and being cooled off by the mist. I ordered a Zinburger once again only this time I added bacon and a fried egg. (Probably my favorite meal in the world . . . a good burger with an egg on top). My husband had the plain and simple burger then added goat cheese, roasted peppers and bacon. We shared zucchini fries and sweet potato chips once again. It just was all so good. The food was tasty, the wine was perfectly chilled, the weather was cooperating, the waitstaff was really nice and I was wearing a super cute red, white and blue flower necklace my friend made for me. Total awesomeness all around. I was a having a great time and then we got the check and made it all the better. A bottle of wine, two burgers, five additions to the burgers, and two sides for just under $28. My eyes were popping out of their sockets. The waitress told us that since we'd gotten there just before happy hour was over, she immediately started the tab so that we could also that discount. Wow. I was so grateful and all the happier. Thank you so much. Thank you also for the little note you left on my to-go box. I couldn't have asked for a nicer evening and a more pleasant waitress.

I didn't want to be a sap, a clown or get taken to the cleaners. We'd just been really wanting to try this place for a while. I went in knowing that I'd probably be paying too much for a burger, so it was a nice surprise when we walked in and were told that we had about 10 minutes left of happy hour so a whole bunch of menu items would be half price. Score!
Their decor is a sort of contemporary streamline style. I love that they have a wall full of all different sizes of mirrors. I'd love to do that in my house if it didn't mean that I'd have to spend half my life wiping off little hand and paw prints. : (
Anyway, I have to tell you about the hostess. You know Kenneth the page, right? You know how in this last episode he'd pass a hand in front of his face and transform into either himself or Jack's assistant. That's what she reminded me of. She seemed sort of, OK, not sort of, really, really fake. Like the type of person who is nice to you then talks bad about you behind your back. Yeah, like me in high school. She asked us how our day had been so far and pretended to hear the answer. I know it's part of her job, but people can be more natural about it, no? I mean, if I ask you how you're doing, I really do want to know. If I don't ask, I don't care. But I digress . . . . .
The food was good. We had the Zinburger and the Samburger (perks of being married: getting to share halvsies of food), the zucchini fries and the sweet potato chips. Note: You can, in fact, order sweet potato FRIES. They are not on the menu, but they will be made for you. It just takes longer. Don't ask how they taste because I was given this info without asking for them.
The food really was good. The servers were confused. They kept taking our orders over to the table next to us. I found it amusing until we were told that our tables had been separated, thus explaining the confusion. It wasn't funny after that. OK . . . . yes it was. Anyway, the total was way less that I'd expected. Two burgers, two sides and a bottle of wine for $38. How's that for the cleaners?
Overall, it was good, not fantastic but the burgers didn't make me sick which is always a plus.

Eegee's

I understand that each city has it's own local restaurant that everyone loves and says you HAVE to try. Heck, the hit in my home town specializes in soggy tacos in an almost rotten tomato sauce with rubbery cheese on top and everyone LOVES it. That is unless you're not from there.
I fear that's what happened with me and Eegee's. I went there so willing to love it, but it didn't work out that way. I'd been hearing about their drinks for the longest time. I mean, schools even have Eegee parties for a super special treat. I had no idea they were like slushees. I fully recognize that my not loving this place is almost certainly my fault. If I'd been born here, I'd have been implanted with the Eegee-loving chip upon my birth, but that wasn't the case. I won't get into details about the almost cardboard-like bread and the soggy fries in order to not risk alienating anyone further. Sorry. Please don't hate me.

Give me a place where the staff dances around the tables, there's all sorts of fire stunts going on and someone breaks a dish and tells "Opa!" and I'm there. I was very, very pleasantly surprised. (take a deep breath here for a sun-on sentence following) You know when you walk into a place expecting to hate it and the only reason you went in the first place is because someone else wanted to go and then the waitress is really nice and she explains the menu because you don't know any other greek food other than spanakopita, gyros and couscous and then you finally decide and then you get your food and it tastes soooooo good? Yeah, that's how it was here.

It's been so long since I've had a real Mexican breakfast that I didn't have to cook myself, so I was really looking forward to this place.
First off, I must say that I always answer in the language I'm spoken to. If I'm greeted in English, I answer in English. If I'm greeted in Spanish, I answer in Spanish. And, no, I don't get all "THIS IS AMERICA, LEARN ENGLISH" only because, technically, and as a country, we don't have an official language. Anyway, a waitress lady greeted us in very heavily accented English. I replied in English. She left and another waitress came. Only this one spoke better English. I felt horrible. Like I'd snubbed the first waitress when that wasn't my intention at all. Sorry.
OK, so now to the food. -sigh- I was let down again. I ordered eggs with machaca. I sort of figured they'd be "ropa vieja" or "grenudas" style (a sort of little omelet made with machaca and an egg batter then topped with a green chile/tomatillo sauce.) I don't know why I assumed that and was very disappointed when I saw scrambled eggs mixed with machaca. Also, the beans had yellow cheese in them. Oh no! They thought we were non-Spanish speaking folk who probably like American cheese. I was really looking forward to Asadero cheese. Oh well. It was all alright food, I just expected different. I expected more.
The waitresses were really very, very nice and they probably would have brought something else out if I would've asked them, but I didn't. My husband had scrambled eggs with chorizo (which I could've just as easily made at home) and the kids had pancakes (also could've been had at home). I just felt sort of like I went went somewhere pretty far from my house only to end up feeling like I paid for something I could've made myself. I hate that feeling.

Fry's Bakery

Category: Bakeries

5 star rating
 6/17/2009   First to Review
I am specifically reviewing the bakery at this location. Now, Fry's doesn't exactly come to mind when I think of the bakery I most want to go to, but I wanted one of those birthday cakes with the thin picture wafer. We were having my little boy's birthday party with a Star Wars theme and I ordered a cake with a picture of my son during Padawan training at Disneyland.
The party was starting at 2:00, I ordered the cake to be ready at 1:00. I figured the less time we had with the cake, the less damage could be done to it.
As it always turns out, my husband was ready way before me. He was just sort of waiting around while I was busy with my hair. So he asked, "Should I go get the cake?" What could possibly happen, right?
He leaves. I finish getting ready. I make sure I have everything I need. Candles, camera, treat bags, everything has been checked off my list. The kids have been ready for a while. Where is my husband? He calls.

me: (instead of answering "hello") where are you?
him: I've been trying to call you. I dropped the cake
me: (total, complete silence)
him: hello?
me: you're kidding, right?
him: NO! I dropped the cake. It's windy and I was trying to open the door and blah, blah, blah (I sort of drifted out or passed out for a while)
me: (quiet again)
him: oh, so what, now you're mad?
me: uh . . . .no . . . . just . . . .well, go buy another one. I mean, what else can we do? (I was in a sort of daze really. I wasn't even mad, just numb)
him: OK, I'll call you back

As it turns out, he went back in with the remains of the first cake. The bakery people saw it and made him a whole new one - exactly the same as the first one-  with the picture and all. AND . . . .  wait for it . . .  wait for it . . . . . for free! Yes, they didn't charge him. Plus, they had it ready for him in about 10 minutes. They are complete life savers. I joked with my husband that the bakery people probably thought he had a super mean wife and felt bad for him. Either way, they saved the party and saved my husband some grief. Too bad nothing can save him from all the "cake dropping" snarky comments he's been getting.
