My Last Meal On EarthSalteñas
Don't Tell Anyone Else But...I pay for coffee using pennies, nickels and dimes
Most Recent DiscoveryEach weekend morning, I would bike to the Del Ray farmers market for one reason, and that was to scarf down Salteñas. A man known to me as "empanada man" sells these as his sole product. On my last bike ride, he told me that he just started selling "Salteñas", not empanada's, at his bakery (Marcela's Bakery) on Mt. Vernon ave. I thought to myself, Salteñas? What the heck are these? So I did some research while drooling over myself.
Salteñas pronounced, "sawl-TAY-nyahs", are a sweet, flaky pot-pie like pastry, filled with peas, egg, potatoes, chicken or beef and are about the size of a Russet potato. These delicious Saltenas are accompanied by llajua which is a bight jalapeno sauce and a laughable spoon.
There is a craft to eating these. I've found that the best way is to ditch the spoon, grab the Salteñas by its end, and eat it from the other end, preferably over something that's worthy of receiving Salteñas drippings.
They cost $2.50 each and have made my "last meal on Earth" list!
Note: The vendor also can be found at the Wednesday farmers market in Old Town.
(1) It's healthy
(2) Filling
(3) Under $6.00 (most Pitas)
(4) Hardly a wait, and very quick service.
I love the hummus veggie on non-food coma days and the Chicken and Steak special for a good power meal.
They also offer breakfast but have not tired this yet. Review to come!
Note: This place is hardly visible from Crystal Drive and tucked away behind the courtyard/seating lawn. However, this Perfect Pita is not to be confused with the one that is underground.
The Experience: Both times I visited here, the sales staff never offered help until I asked a few times and was put off. The apathetic sales staff was not helpful beyond opening a case of glasses for me to look at.
The Wait: It's "Hour Eyes" but should be more like 240 Hour Eyes . The sales associate told me I would receive my glasses it in three business days ( selected a pair few days prior, re-visited, sales associate couldn't locate the pair, inventory showed still in the store). Called three business days later, and now it's ten business days.
Bottom line: Be patient for the savings. Sales staff probably won't be much help, you'll get a decent price on glasses and it could take more an hour to get your eyes.

One word. Teds
I go here at least twice a month for lunch, have had most of the burgers on the menu, and love the Green & Hot Bison burger. The best times to go are either at 11:00AM or 1:30PM. The service can still be slow during these times, but is much improved. Definitely a 45-minute lunch. Definitely not as cheap as McDonald's or as great value as Ray's Hell Burger, but the best bet in Crystal City for a decent burger.
Fun Fact: The Bison/Buffalo head in the dining room is real!

This Starbucks is definitely not the "third place". As the other reviews mention, this Starbucks is notorious for poor service, employee turnover and poor quality product.
Just like Jalyn H. mentioned, this is also the closest Starbucks to my office and I go there often, generally just for a regular drip coffee of the day.
My experience: Just last Friday, I went there to get a drip coffee, and experienced poor product and service. This is one of many similar experiences I have had in the last months.
Poor Product: As I'm walking back to my office, I near the end of my coffee and get a mouthful of coffee grounds. YUCK! I open the lid and see that the bottom is filled with grounds. Coffee grounds in my cup would indicate that there's a quality control issue at hand. Coffee grounds are heavy and generally end up at the bottom of the container the coffee is being dispensed from.
Poor Service: This means that the employees may have served me the last drops of coffee. I took my coffee, grounds and all, and was fortunate to talk to the same person who sold me the cup that morning. I told her that there are coffee grounds in my drip coffee. She looked into my cup, dumped the coffee out, and poured the coffee back into the same cup. I asked her to give me a new cup and she did, only after giving me an unfriendly look. I received the cup and was told by the next employee that I would be charged $0.50 for a re-fill. I explained that the coffee should have been right the first time and they gave it to me for free.
If I were Howard Schultz, I would definitely look into this store as an example that the Starbucks experience is breaking down. As a result, I will no longer visit this store, given that this incident was the last straw and this location has reapetedly failed to live up to the Starbucks standard.
Update as of 12/2/2008 - I went here yesterday with a coworker of mine ( I didn't purchase a thing, I went to the other nearby Starbucks). But my coworker received the same lousy service I had received. It appears, based off my observation, that they haven't changed their attitude/service.
Just as Kelly K. stated, my food was cold and seemed undercooked on my previous visit. This was the case for both lunch and dinner.
However, when the food was warm, it was quite delicious, but this review gets two starts for inconsistency.

Move-tastic!

Neighborhood: The Loop
From start to finish, the experience was fantastic. The quote was accurate and reasonable. On moving day, the move went great. The two men showed up on time and could have accomidated me earlier. They were both very professional and respectful of my belongings. Like the other reviews, they do run!
I highly recommend them and will use them for future moves.
This place appears to be on the expensive side for service.

This Caribou has consistently provided me with faster service than the other two nearby Starbucks which is why I spend $0.16 more for a cup of brewed coffee.
