Toscana Restaurant

An Italian restaurant the way it should be. Great food, great atmosphere, and nice location - what else can you ask for?

You have to look close to notice the place. It's located not on the main street in Dun Laoghaire - if you're passing the main pier and continue your way besides the water, you'll notice it.

As Quentin mentioned in his review, this place is run by Italians so expect no Temple Bar-touristy-overpriced-bull@#$# food. We had a Caesar Salad (5.95 Euro), Crab Claws (11.95 Euro),  Spaghetti Carbonara (13.95 Euro), a Cotolette d'Agnello (22.50 Euro), and Tiramisu (5.95 Euro). Both value and quality of the food was just superb.

The staff is really friendly and knowledgeable and give you a warm welcome once you enter the restaurant.

So if you're looking for one of the best Italian restaurants in the Dublin area I highly recommend checking out this one!

There is also a Dublin location which I haven't tested out yet.

TriBeCa

Third time's the charm! After (unsuccessfully) stopping by twice in the evening without reservation, I decided to plan ahead and booked a table for Saturday night a week in advance (everybody wishing to dine at Tribeca I recommend doing the same).

This place in Ranelagh is apparently packed for brunch, lunch, and dinner - they must do something right then (and good for the owners to own such a gold mine).

It's great for groups and couples - a bursting, busy restaurant, serving modern American and English food. Salads, Burgers, Pasta - you name it. You get good value for your money, the size of portions is just about right (tested an Asian Chicken Salad, 14.95 Euro, Italian Stallion Burger, 14.95 Euro, Chicken Wings, 12.95 Euro). With a lot of competition of good Burgers in Ranelagh, the Italian Stallion was decent - though I'd prefer Jo Burger just because their burgers are a bit more creative.

The bar is well equipped, the staff friendly and quick - what else can you ask for.

Just one thing - book in advance.

Grafton Lounge

It's 12.30 on a Friday night, you're out for drinks in the Grafton Street area and you feel like swinging your hips a little without paying cover at this time of the night. My buddy had this genius idea of dropping by at this place - oh well.

The place is fairly big, with a dance floor, a lounge area and some tables. A bit irritating that there was music playing but the DJ was nowhere to be seen, and when he showed up, he gladly ignored requests from the mostly super drunken crowd.

Since the music was the same as in every other bar, the drinks as expensive as anywhere else, and the crowd extremely drunk and annoying, I don't think that place will see me again in the near future. You get what you pay for!

Cafe En Seine

Cafe en Seine is a bursting spot on the weekends, and you can either start your night-out there with a couple of drinks, have dinner, or get there at 11 to hit the dance floor.

Expect to rather dress up than down and also expect to pay more for your drinks than the average in Dublin. I've been there a few times already but must admit that the quality of the drinks served at the different bars never really struck me - you're better off at Dakota for example.

Dakota Bar

Dakota is not your traditional pub, more like a modern, American-style bar with lounge seating, an outdoor area, and most importantly, a loooooong bar.

The choice of liquids is great and the bartenders know their stuff - at least on the weekends. Big minus, and that's why only 3 stars:

I came in on a Wednesday evening and ordered a Hendrick's Tonic, and was expecting my gin to be served with a fresh piece of cucumber, like I had at the same place the weekend before. The girl at the bar was new and clearly had no clue what she was doing - first she squeezed a lemon over the gin, and after I asked for a cucumber, she used her fingers to get the lemon out of the glass and replaced it with my favorite gin veggie.

Well, not really classy for a bar that wants to be classy and not funny if you're asked to pay about 8.50 Euro for that drink. But okay Dakota, I'll give you one more try.

I always have a good time here - actually as I'm writing this it reminds me to come here more often!

What I like about the Bleeding Horse is that there's enough space to sit, chat, smoke, drink, make out etc. They have an upstairs and an outdoor area, so if it gets too steamy inside, there's no need to yell at each other or smell the tasty sweat of the drunken guy next to you. As my fellow Yelpers said before, this is also a pretty good sports bar with loads of TV screens. When I went inside for a pint the other night, the pub was crowded but almost silent, as everybody was staring at the screens. There was some rugby match going on, well, what do I know.

Big plus for the bartenders who know how to do the Jäger Bomb without charging you for Red Bull and Wodka separately.

Zaytoon

Zaytoon has two locations. Whereas the one closer to Temple Bar is usually crowded and has in-store guards at night time (judging by their appearance I wouldn't mess with them), the one on Lower Camden seems to be a bit more relaxed.

Came here a couple of times at different times of the day/night, mainly to get my Kebab cravings solved. They serve decent Persian food. Don't expect to get your Döner Kebab (or donner, how they call it) to go, it comes on a plate with some salad aside and bread. Also expect to pay about 8 Euro for a single kebab (yes you heard right) or about 10.50 Euro for a meal.

Recommended: Barg (fillet of beef marinated with saffron and own special spices grilled on a skewer) and Lamb Döner (Lamb marinated with spices with bread).with spices with bread).

I have to agree with Gilbert when it comes to the quality of their pub food (highlights: Homemade Cheeseburger, Shrimp & Chips, Fresh Mussels) and the service - they're usually pretty fast and the waitresses do pay attention.

However, I'm more of a lazy sleazeball and recommend you to take the car all the way up to Howth Summit. For two good reasons: the gorgeous views of the Dublin bay at any time of the day (including a stroll to the lighthouse), followed by a stop at the Summit Inn.

Come early on sunny weekends though - it may be hard to make your way through the crowds.

Kanum

3.0 star rating

As a mixture between fast food and takeout place, Kanum offers a decent Thai experience in D4. The interior is kept simple and clean, white walls, high bar-stool seating, a counter to order with an the open kitchen in the back.

The food comes in disposable boxes but you're welcome to stay and have your Pad Thai, Green Curry, or Fried Rice on disposable dishes. So far, I tried all of the above and was very pleased with the quality and the taste.

One thing I'm not pleased with (and that's why only 3 stars) is the price - you can easily spend more than 30 Euros for two people for your lunch, way too much for a fast food-ish place, if you ask me. Show owner comment »

Riordans Food House

1.0 star rating

I hate to give one star but my experience there was just awful.

Having some visitors over from Germany I thought I'd take them out on a Sunday morning to show them a decent Full Irish breakfast. What we got at "Riordan's Traditional Irish Food" was less decent but memorable: a Full Irish Microwaved breakfast. Seriously, the cook didn't even bother to close the kitchen door and you could watch him putting one plate after another into the microwave. There was NOTHING fresh on the plate, even the scrambled egg has been prepared the evening before.

On top of it, charging almost 8 Euro for that kind of breakfast is just ridiculous.

We were not the only ones suffering - apparently that's how they do the breakfast over there.
