I really liked our food but the service was just awful!  It was one poor guy working there - he was busing, waiting, and hosting.   This meant that he'd disappear for a long time and it took us a while to get out of there.  It was kind of annoying and he looked so miserable being there.  He finally cracked a smile towards the end.  There were five empty booths and none of them had been bused when a new party came in, so the guy was scrambling to clean them to seat new people.  K&T peeps:  hire more people!!!

It was also strangely quiet in there, even when full with groups of people and even families with kids.  Everyone's voices echoed.  It made the environment feel a little sterile even though the restaurant was pleasantly decorated.  Some music would help the ambiance.

I really liked the onion pakoras and the ground beef kabob.  Those were my favs.  The palak paneer was great, too.  We also got a spicy chicken dish and I can't remember the name, but it was very tasty.

I think next time I'd do takeout.

Great place.  Accommodating, kid-friendly, and warm.  We went for the first time yesterday, and there was a short wait, but they offered us drinks while we waited.  My son had a great time - he colored as he waited, he loved the food of the children's menu, and they brought him an ice cream sandwich for dessert.  Santa was even there when we went!

My tuna melt was great, my husband enjoyed his burger, and our friends liked the meatloaf.  There was a good beer selection, too.

I've lived in Newton for 6 1/2 years - I'm not sure why it took us so long to check this place out.  I'm a fan.  Nice atmosphere, too.  Made me feel like I was on vacation in the mountains somewhere.

Oh, also they asked us if it was our first time there and when we said yes, they brought us warm "welcome" cookies for dessert!

Update - 12/15/2011
I live right around the block so I still go frequently.  I like their pastries, their sandwiches, and pretty much everything, but I am going to have to dock them a star.   The staff has gotten more and more surly over the past few years.  Each time I go, I feel like I'm somehow imposing on the employees.   The owner is awesome and he's always super accommodating but the rest of the people working there just seem so...listless and impolite.

I'm also a fan of nearby L'Aroma but I find the baked goods and sandwiches are better at Keltic Krust.   My favs: hot cross buns, chelsea buns, pesto/tomato/mozz sandwich...mmmmm....

Keltic Krust was going a little bit downhill earlier this year.  I had gotten a brownie that tasted like it had been sitting in the fridge for way too long and it sort of turned me off.

But recently, it went under new ownership and things have really improved!  The interior that people have complained about in posts from previous years is much nicer, including more cafe-like chairs instead of those old pink ones.  They've also improved a few of their recipes (namely the cookies that went from mediocre to really good!) and expanded their sandwich offerings.    Their hours are better, too.

They didn't change the recipes of their classics like the hot cross buns and the chelsea buns, luckily.

It seems like they're doing even a little more to improve Keltic Krust, and I'm excited to see what else.

I do agree that the interior could use a little work and that the hours are unaccommodating.   But I was surprised to see people say that the food looks like it's been sitting around forever.  In my experience, everything I've had there has been very, very fresh.  (And you can get discounted day old pastries)

Their sandwiches are good and they have nice choices of bread.  Their free wi-fi is much faster than at most places that offer free wi-fi.  The people who work there are friendly and remember their customers.  It's seldom empty inside.  In fact, on the weekend mornings I can never even find a seat.

I'd like to see it expand its hours and make the interior a little more welcoming (maybe a sofa or some nicer tables/chairs?)

Anyway, give Keltic Krust a chance!!  And try their hot cross buns.

The Kids Place For Fun

Super fun!!  I wanted my two year old to paint on a coffee mug for a Christmas gift for my husband.  A lot of the pottery painting places are not young-kid friendly, so I wasn't really comfortable bringing my son there.  The Kids Place was perfect.  They had a small play area for little kids which was great for when I was picking out paint, paying, etc.   The mug looks really cute and I can't wait to give it to my husband!

LIKE:  Awesome toys, cute kids stuff in general, cheap chow, small houseplants, and kitchen stuff.

DISLIKE:  I'm not a huge fan of the furniture styles.  Flimsy.  Too boxy and mod for my taste, but I know a lot of people like it.

HATE:  I don't want to go through the entire friggin store just to pay for one item that I found as soon as I walked in.    ARGHHHH!!!!!

Rox Diner

I was excited to see that the Rox Diner was opening a Newton location, as I had heard that their West Roxbury location was great.  It was also nice to see something new and unique go into the old KFC space.

It was pretty busy when I went.  I got there at 2 PM on a Sunday and we had to wait about fifteen minutes.  It's not a large space and I assume it was a little crowded since it had just opened.  I was really impressed with the menu.  Lots of local ingredients with a fairly reasonable price tag on a lot of the menu items.

I got an egg salad sandwich with homemade potato chips.  I asked for red onion but unfortunately it came without.  The sandwich was still very tasty, though.  The bread was grilled and the egg salad wasn't swimming in mayo like at some places.  The service was also good and the waitress was attentive about refilling my iced tea.

It's a nice addition to Newtonville and I will definitely go back again.  Their menu has lots of different kinds of french toast and I am eager to try them!

Gymboree

Gymboree is really great if you have babies/tots/preschoolers.  It's definitely a bit expensive, but it is worth it during a New England winter because of the open gym hours.

The equipment is all geared towards little ones so it's awesome to have a safe, indoor place for wild kids to run around and play.  The classes are fun and laid back, so if your kid doesn't want to participate with every game (like mine, who would rather go down the slide over and over again) it's totally fine.

I also highly recommend the birthday parties.  We had my son's 2nd birthday here and it was fab.  It was cool to have a fun place for active toddlers to play but even better -- they take care of all the setup and cleanup.

Yeah, it smells bad, but I brave the smell for the deals.  Great stuff for kids and cheap cheap cheap.  Kids books for a buck.  Halo brand Sleep Sacks (name brand - not knock offs) which normally go for $40 were $6.99 today!   Carter's brand thermals for $4.99.  The prices are ridiculous.

Oh, and I kinda love that some of their shopping carts are old Caldor shopping carts.

A sweet little amusement park to take little kids to.  It's best for the 8 and under set.  Many of the rides are geared specifically towards little kids, and there lots of other things to explore like old train cabooses!  We went for the "Day Out w/ Thomas the Tank Engine" which was a really cute event.  There was a giant Thomas the Tank Engine, a 20 minute train ride that was quite scenic, live music, and Thomas-themed events including someone dressed as Sir Topham Hat.

It's a really simple amusement park and it's not stressful or overcrowded or loud.

Nice, big, and has EVERYTHING you could need.  You can go shopping there, grab a scoop of gelato or a cup of coffee, or have lunch.   Even on a Saturday afternoon, it doesn't feel super crowded like some of the other Whole Foods Markets in the area.

There's a little play area for kids, which is AWESOME if you have little kids -- just beware of parents who drop their kids off in the play area and wander off.   Not cool!
