American Legion Marsh Post #442

Don't really know what category to put the Marsh Post in, because it's both a great place to rent for a private event and a great place to party during a public event. It's hard to find, but once you get there you've stumbled on the perfect summer spot. There's a patio right on the river plus cheap drinks. Look out for the Dancing On The Charles parties going on throughout the summer.

T.W. Food

HOLY WOW! I think I just had the best birthday dinner of my life at this intimate new spot in West Cambridge. This space used to be occupied by Asapsia, which was very good, but T.W. Food blows it right out of the water. Tim (chef) and Bronwyn (proprietor, manager) Wiechmann clearly have a vision for what they believe a restaurant should be and they more than pull it off. Every detail is perfectly executed to make this dining experience as good as any I've had in Boston/Cambridge.

First of all let's start with the most important thing at any restaurant: the food. They pride themselves on "organic and fairly treated ingredients" and this philosophy shines through in all the unique flavors I tasted. I would describe the food as nouvelle cuisine, which usually means over the top flavors that don't necessarily work, and really expensive menu, but not in this case.

It was my bday so of course I splurged for the tasting menu and was not disappointed. There's something I love about being surprised with all the chef's favorites throughout a meal and this was no exception. Here's what I was served: Creme Brule of Foie Gras, Oyster Shooter, French Wild Asparagus Flowers (imported i was told, cause you can't get asparagus flowers here), Soft Shell Crab, Organic Pork Loin, an amazing Parmesan cheese with balsamic drizzle and then "Scotch & Cigars" (an amazing combo of dark chocolate custard, vanilla-tobacco creme and single malt scotch sirup) for dessert. Basically everything had the perfect combination of unusual flavors with the highlights being the Foie Gras (teacup sized but felt like an entire meal) and the soft shell crab.

The amazing food would have warranted 5 stars on it's own (and you know this goes against my usual philosophy), but the details are what really put T.W. Food over the top. First of all Bronwyn is one of two waitresses and basically knows the menu inside out and was so helpful and friendly, which made the experience very personal. Secondly the design is perfect (especially the menus).

So yeah, T.W. Food gets highest recommendation from me. Make a trip to the westside and enjoy!

I am blown away at the number of bad reviews of this place. Sure the burgers aren't the gresiest and juciest, but sometimes you just want some flavorful meat that doesn't make you feel fat when your done. Plus the fries are top notch and the veggies option is great to have too. It all combines to equal my favorite spot for a quick bite in Harvard. For real.

Good points Pete S, but I was in need of something fast and I really enjoyed my burger, so I'm willingly to overlook the crazy price-to-service ratio. And while the former occupant of this space, Lee's Beehive was a Harvard Square staple, this is one of the few new places in Harvard Square that is better than it's predecessor. Although, I love Felipe's and I'm really looking forward to trying "Flat Patties".

Yes. We finally have a dance music record store in Boston again. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK. For those that don' know: DJ M used to buy the breaks and tech-funk at now defunct Satellite records and now plies his trade bringing in the newest bangers you can't find on the internet at LAB (dude is also a resident at Avalon/Axis so don't sleep).

They also have lots of rad t-shirts that I can't afford and feature some of the best local artists on the wall. So yeah, nice work guys, you earned your stars.

Super Fusion Cuisine

I'm not sure if I love or hate how the 2 best Sushi spots in the Boston area are so small that getting a table requires waiting for extended periods of time even during the week...well I guess I do hate that part, but HOT DAMN the sushi at Super Fusion sure is worth the wait. The creativity of the maki is up there with the best (I especially like the use of papaya) and the quality of fish also top notch (had outstanding toro here). So yeah, the sushi=5 stars, but as I've said before it takes more to get 5 stars overall (in this case ambiance) and that's why Fugakyu is still my favorite sushi spot.

If hot chocolate alone could warrant 5 stars, then Burdick would probably be a 6. Unfortunately, more is necessary. Not to say that Burdick does not offer some of the best homemade chocolates around too, but the atmosphere still leaves something to be desired. Either way, come for the hot chocolate if nothing else.

My girlfriend has been going here every two weeks since the begining of time.  They let her bring in our dog, and are always polite, efficient, and inexpensive.

I clearly am the biggest dork on the planet. I am so obsessed with my miniature pinscher that whenever I pass a dog store I have to stop and buy any min pin paraphernalia that they have. Raining Cats & Dogs is like a dog fanatics superstore. They have like a million dog souvenirs, from bumper stickers, to statues, to sticky notes. I stocked up on Hanukkah presents way early!

The morning after my visit to Mohegan I headed over to Mystic Cycle Center to rent a bike (mine mysteriously disappeared, damn Boston bike thieves!) and go for a relaxing ride through Mystic and Groton. Mystic Cycle Center hooked me up with a sick hybrid for like $20 and they also tuned up my girlfriend's bike and gave us helmets for free. That's 5 stars in my book!

Michael Jordan's Steak House

I recently visited Mohegan Sun for the first time and while I don't gamble, my visit to MJ's Steakhouse really made the trip. I was actually really skeptical about going to a steakhouse created by an athlete (as I am about any restaurant created by a celebrity, I mean stick to what you do), but I saw the lobster mashed potatoes on Phantom Gourmet and figured that these alone could make the meal. It turns out I was right, but not only about the mashed potatoes (which were amazing). The Kansas City strip steak was beyond juicy and served perfectly rare. It's worth the trip to Mohegan just to try MJ's, as our waitress said, "the best has to do everything best".
