I found this place right across from Tadamasa. I love their kaarage chicken and I love their Dynamite roll. I'm told they have so much delicious food in their menu so I'll definitely try the rest of their menu items.

They have a huge variety of sushi in their menu, plus recently they opened a small ramen menu. I haven't tried much of them yet, but I'll definitely will. Once I do, I'll post up some updates.

This is the first time I've been to Tadamasa, considering that I've been wishing & hoping that one day that Union City will finally have its own ramen-ya. Last time I've eaten ramen at a "real" ramen-ya was back in Hawaii and I haven't seen any other local Japanese restaurant around U.C. that serves actual ramen.

I ordered a Coconut Miso Ramen, which looked really intriguing and delicious and it didn't disappoint me. It was the best ramen I've ever had--- piping hot and the service was really quick and prompt! Along with it was a six-pc gyoza appetizer, which wasn't too greasy for me. I had a small chat with the person who served me regarding the restaurant and ramen-yas in general and overall I really enjoyed my visit.

I am not an expert on ramen in general, so I can't really relate to all the other reviews here, but my first visit here didn't disappoint me at all.

I'll definitely come back to try out their other ramen on the menu. Too bad it's closed on Mondays. The day was slightly breezy and cold and it felt really good to warm up with a delicious bowl of ramen.

Pho Tuong Lai

Pho Tuong Lai have been my favorite, probably the only place that I go for hot and piping Pho and other varieties of Vietnamese cuisine when I'm in the mood for so long, but I haven't written a review of this place yet.

The service is quick and prompt and the food they serve was always fresh, piping hot, seriously there. I usually go here around mid-afternoon (like 1:30pm or so) on the weekdays as it does get crowded during regular lunchtime hours. It's also a great location, just next door to Daiso and Marina Food Market. I mostly come here for Pho, especially during the cold and windy days and this place always kept me warm and cozy, even when the place can be noisy or can be very silent. Earlier today I came here for a Vermicelli Bowl with two sliced egg rolls, fish sauce, and a small bowl of beef broth (which I find very tasty by itself, no need to add salt or pepper or anything). The vermicelli bowl had a nice mix of vegetables (carrots, shredded jicama, shredded cucumber, cabbage, mint leaves) topped with freshly-fried egg rolls (with a very tasty filling of course). Pour the fish sauce over the entire bowl and the dish is just pure heaven. Very reasonable for $6.75 as the portion is very generous.

I haven't tried their dessert drinks yet but I was also told that they're quite good also. I mostly have water, diet soda or thai tea for drink whenever I come here. Will definitely come back for their drinks later on.

Sweet Trendy - CLOSED

Update - 3/4/2011
The new place is now the Union City branch of 37 C (Degrees?) Dessert Cafe, like the one in San Francisco and in Fremont. I actually haven't been here since 2 years ago, so I don't remember or recall if this place under new management and new name had the same menu.

I ordered a Dragon drink (part of their Chinese Zodiac series of drinks) and a Healthy Four iced dessert bowl. I like to try new and different stuff so when I came here I didn't expect to be like TapEx. The Dragon drink consisted of orange juice, red pomegranate and mango (?) with some pearls in it. I didn't know what those pearls were but when popped, there's some kind of a syrup (orange?) that oozes out from them. The juice itself was pretty good but the little syrup balls were a distraction for me to enjoy the drink.

And then there's the Healthy Four iced dessert. It's pretty much a "jelly" dessert that consists of aloe, tadpole jelly (?), honey pearls and the coral/seaweed-like addition LOL. Nevertheless, it was really good, really refreshing, and it wasn't too sweet (but nevertheless sweet). It's a recommended dessert though the coral was somewhat annoying to eat (the taste's ok, it's not sweet but not gross either--- it's just annoying to eat due to its shape LOL).

Like the old Sweet Trendy, service was also slow, but at that time, there were more customers and there were only two employees/servers, so it's one of their busier days I guess.

Not too sure about the Dragon drink, but I really love the Healthy Four dessert. I'll come back here next time to try out their hot dishes. Maybe for lunch.

I decided to stop by Sweet Trendy after shopping for some household supplies at Daiso, only because of my curiosity. I wondered what their products were in comparison to the dessert and snacks stations that recently opened this year (ie. Yogurt Train, TuttiMelon, etc.). The menu on the wall was quite intimidating (meaning they've got a lot to offer and a lot more to come in the future).

I spotted a section of "sago delights". Being a Filipino that I am, I went to try out their "sago delights." On the sidenote, "sago" is another type of tapioca pearl, but they're white instead of the standard black pearls you see in Tapioca Express and other boba drink places. I ordered a Lychee Sago Delight for $4.99. It turns out that their Sago Delights is nothing more than a bowl of flavored shaved ice with mini-sago balls, topped with a variety of fresh, finely-chopped fruits (mango, kiwi, strawberry). It's quite healthy if you're a health nut as it is covered with a lot of fresh fruit, but I guess I was a little misled thinking that their "sago delight" was a type of drink (like the standard sago drink I'm familiar with--- tofu curds, molasses, and what not, served hot). On the other hand, today was a hot, almost to a boiling point day that I had my fresh and icy cold dessert.

When I got back to my car I spotted a card/coupon that has their ice cream promotions and such. Since I had to head back home I'll come back to this place next time just to try out their ice cream and their promotions there. (I read that there's no tapioca included in these promotional items, but that's not a big deal for me. I get my tapioca from Tapioca Express anyway)

Gerry's Grill and Bar

I haven't written a review for pretty much over a year now, so I'm back starting with this new review.

I will admit that I'm not a huge fan of Filipino food cooked at outside restaurants since I do eat Filipino food at home day and night (I belong to a family of great home cooks after all), however my first time (in some years) of eating in a Filipino restaurant when my relatives spent their holidays here from Washington and wanted a dose of "real" Filipino food. When they found out that we have a Gerry's Grill here in UC (since two of them were still fresh from the Philippines), they chose to dine in.

We dined in for dinner just two-three days before New Year's Eve and it was seriously packed. We waited for about 10-15 mins to get seated, however it even took us longer to wait (about 15 more minutes, sadly) when it came to ordering the food, although the food served to us really made us realize that this was all worth the wait.

There were some of the dishes which I haven't eaten in awhile, such as Kilawen (Tuna), and ones I tried for the first time (grilled calamari/squid). I will admit that the food was definitely freshly-cooked and absolutely perfect. The Sisig really won me that got my relatives and I to order another one.

I have to admit though that the prices really intimidated me, which was why I only gave 3 stars. Then again, I haven't been to the Philippines in the longest while and didn't know until that time that Gerry's Grill was one of those upper-scale restaurant chains for grilled-style Filipino cuisine, thus the scary prices. However I will consider returning here one day.

Dragon House

5.0 star rating

I am a regular to this restaurant--- that is, a regular "to-go" customer.

Once a week my family and I would always order from Dragon House whenever we're lazy to cook for dinner. Ever since they've opened (after so many Chinese/Asian restaurants that tried to make a business in this particular building and had not survived that long) they have been making good business with all the locals (I only live a walking distance block away from this place) and even out-of-town people.

Their Honey Walnut Prawns are some of their best dishes we've ever had, but my family and I always craved for their Egg Foo Young (try them all, but we always loved chicken or beef). It's a very huge portion smothered with their very tasty sauce for such an affordable price and it's because of this that I am a huge believer of quality matters over price. Their vegetable dishes were also to die for (according to my vegetarian friend who I took out to lunch just a few days ago), and their Beef Broccoli dish is one of my favorites (they have a good equal portion of the broccoli and the beef with other vegetables incorporated and their broccoli is very tender and crisp).

I've tried other Chinese restaurants, even the super-authentic ones at the El Mercado Shopping Center area (where majority of the Asian/Chinese/Taiwanese businesses are located), and I still prefer Dragon House. I'm also a person of locality and I've always frequent the local shops over franchises and Dragon House deserves to have a name among the best places to dine in when you're visiting Union City. I even recommend some relatives and some out-of-towner friends that they can't leave Union City without ordering a dish or two from Dragon House when they crave for Chinese food.

Though I am a "to go" person and they do offer Free Delivery, I prefer to pick up the dishes myself since it's only a good walking distance from my house, however it's just my chance of saying hello to the friendly staff over there. :)

Paddy's Coffee House

5.0 star rating

I only live a block walking distance (about 3-mins walk) from Paddy's but I am not a major regular customer. Even if that was the case, I'm still happy that there is a small, more "home"-like coffee place like Paddy's in my neighborhood, knowing I live in the part of U.C. where hardly anyone is familiar with (it's quiet, it's clean, and very relaxing here).

I invited a friend of mine (from out of town) to Paddy's at one time so we can hang out over a iced coffee and what not. She complimented the iced latte she got and really enjoyed it. I always loved their Peppermint Chiller and their Mexican Hot Cocoa (spiced chocolate--- yum!) hands down. After we got our drinks we headed out to the park since there was an important youth awareness event going on in the shop at that time and there was limited seating. When we were at the picnic tables, some unfriendly seagulls flew over us and "bombed" on my shirt and part of my pants. Luckily my drink and my dessert was not attacked.

We ran back to Paddy's to get some napkins and to the restroom where I could wipe off the "stuff" off of my shirt's sleeve. On my way to the restroom, Paddy came by and handed me a t-shirt (for free) rather than wetting my shirt to wipe the "stuff" off. It was unexpected, but I was grateful for such a warm and open and prepared customer service that I received on that day. I'll never forget that day. It was then that I vowed to myself that as a neighbor that I should come to Paddy's a lot more often as my way of showing my gratitude and appreciation. Thank you Paddy and staff!

I don't think that I'll ever have this particular superb customer service experience in any other coffee shop (or anywhere else for that matter) such as the one I had at Paddy's (and of course, the Peppermint Chiller and the Mexican Hot Cocoa was just to die for!). I was even a little embarrassed when I went back simply because I had to get through the huge mob of kids at that youth event with the mess I had with the shirt. After all that, I felt a lot better and more relaxed.

Thank you again for your help and gratitude, Paddy's, and maintain your excellence in your customer service and your involvement in our small hometown community. We need more businesses like you guys around here and you set a very good example to all other business owners there (especially the franchises). :)

Yogurt Train

Category: Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt

4.0 star rating

I've known one of the peeps who work in Yogurt Train for 3+ years since my regular visits at Tapioca Express and I figured that the Yogurt Train owner may be the same person who owns Tapioca Express (otherwise she wouldn't be there LOL). I've only been here twice and I've been liking it so far. As mentioned in my previous Tuttimelon review that I am not a huge frozen yogurt fan, so I'm not going to be very critical with the taste and texture of their frozen yogurts.

On to the review, Yogurt Train has a lot of flavors to choose from. I had a Passion Fruit and another flavor that I forget on my first day there and one of them was a bit less dense than what a standard froyo should be like, but that didn't stop me from enjoying my froyo (I had a lot of toppings to compensate--- grass jelly! yum!). Earlier today I had my two scoops of gelato (tiramisu and another flavor I was unfamiliar with--- I forgot the name too) and I truly enjoyed it. I love how they have more items to choose from (in the near future there will be crepes and I've always been a crepes fan since my first experience at Sophie's Crepes back in SF Japantown), which is something I'm really looking forward to. I also like how they're using foam cups (despite the grudges from the "green" people around) knowing it's going to keep the froyo and the gelato intact when you take out and bring it home, which is a plus.

I'm one of those people who always supported the local shops than the franchises (I love Paddy's... long live locality!) and for sure I've got support for Yogurt Train (unless if I'm wrong and this is a franchise too). This store just opened last weekend and they've got room for improvement. I think some people expect too much for an establishment that just opened for the first time, but each newly-opened establishment has room to grow, room to improve. Plus, the location is cozy and friendly and I like cozy and friendly. :)

Tuttimelon - CLOSED

I've become a regular here since it's only a good 2-block walk from my house (not daily, more like once or twice a week). This branch of Tuttimelon was the place where I had my very first self-serve frozen yogurt (what was it? they call it froyo now? I'm a noob...) experience (when it first opened). The staff is really friendly, I think some of them are quite familiar with me as of late, and a few times they would change up some of the frozen yogurt flavors (ie. cake batter, green tea, etc.) from time to time.

I'm not a major froyo fan but I do like sampling out different frozen desserts out there (from different/unusual flavors of ice cream, gelato, etc.). I feel so relaxed every time I come here and I really love how spacious their place is--- very trendy, "candy"-colored but not very overrated. I don't have a specific favorite flavor, but I do love the texture of the froyo and I also like their assortment of toppings (I usually go for the "exotic" ones, like the mochi, fresh lychee and jelly lychee, and red bean). I like being adventurous when it comes to dessert.

I visited the main site of Tuttimelon and I also noticed that some branches sell other items, like gelato (and I'm a huge fan of gelato). Maybe in the future this branch of Tuttimelon will start selling gelato one day now?
