Petunia's Restaurant - CLOSED

This is the best breakfast place I've ever been to hands down.  It was my first time ever in New Orleans but the last restaurant I had the pleasure of visiting.

The line to get into Peunias was extremely long and extended out the door.  My dad always taught me that when in foreign cities, go to the restaurants with the longest lines.  This plan paid off as I had one of the best meals in my entire life.

Finally, LTF South has opened!

I wrote my review for LTF North a while back, and when I purhcased my membership, I purchased it knowing that this one would be finished by the end of the year.

This location is way better than the location in Cedar Park.  It doesn't smell as funky, the people way cooler, and it's closer to everything Austin.

The new basketball courts have college and NBA 3 point lines, the cafe has a better layout, and the bathrooms/lockerrooms are much nicer than the one up North.

That is saying a lot given that I was expecting exactly the same thing. LTF has really surprised me as they keep exceeding my expectations

This restaurant is right by my house.  I went there for drinks and appetizers a few times before ever eating dinner.  The atmosphere there is great--it has spacious high ceiliengs and lots of tables.

On Sunday, I mentioned half-priced wine bottles that Tara included in her review, and my waiter said, "oh, the online special".  And I said..."yes....the online special".  Sweet.

While my dish of venison was not all too appetizing, I must say that they have the best goat cheese salad I've ever had.  It has 4 fried goat cheese balls on a bed of greens with blackberries, strawberries, and other fruit.  It was a fantastic combination and worth a return trip.

Do it.

Great place to eat when on a night out on the town.  Roppolo's has a pretty nice selection given it's just a stand, but I recommend going for classic Pepperoni.  I'd rather eat here at 2am than Magnolia's or Kerby Lane any day!

If you've never given Roppolo's a shot, I would tell you to ignore the other comments and try it yourself.

I heard this place was really spectacular and had high expectations.  The truth is that I wasn't very amused and the price didn't make me smile either.  After my $60 bill (just for me) came back, I kept asking myself why I was there.

I started with an average goat cheese salad, followed by a decent pan roasted duck breast.  The only 2 real highlights of the night were the Key Lime Pie for dessert and my pre-dinner cocktails of a Cucumber Martini and a Japanese Michilada.

I may go there again for drinks and dessert, but I definitely won't be spending top dollar there again.

Wink

Last night was my brother's 21st birthday and we decided to give Wink a try.

When I first walked in, I immediately noticed how small the place actually is.  The restaurant was alive and loud--but not loud in a bad way.  As our table was being set up, we went to the wine bar for a drink.  It was kind of scary how quiet the wine bar was in comparison to the restaurant.    We had our glass of wine and were notified that our table was ready.

When our group walked back into the restaurant, the energy had not died down.  Our host walked us over to our table, and he surprisingly remembered all of our names!

We sat down and ordered some more wine while we combed the long semi-unstructured menu.  (There is nothing to note where salads, appetizers, and main courses begin and end)

I started my meal with the seared Foie Gras.  Anybody who knows me knows that I love foie gras.  I then had the Grilled Hanger Steak which was soaked in balsamic vinegar.  Each of these was extremely well prepared and delicious.  I actually used the bread role to soak up all the leftover "juice" off my plate.

For dessert, I went for the Goat Cheese Cheesecake.  Sounds weird, but it was phenomenal.  Now, even though the dishes were extremely small, I must say that I was pretty filled up by the end of the meal.

The meal was extremely pricy, but worth it for the occasion.

1886 Cafe & Bakery

1886 is the one place in town that I actually used to work at.  I worked there back in my sophmore year of college for about 4 months.  The Driskill really takes pride in their establishment and the service they provide to their regulars.

Having worked at a really crappy bar/restaurant in high school, I really appreciated 1886.  The "line cooks" are all trained chefs and they also have a dedicated pastry chef that you can see through a window from the restaurant.

While I hated working here (4pm-2am, Fri/Sat in college), I could actually eat here, both while I worked there and after I left.  I knew the food was clean, the kitchen was clean, and the chefs weren't complete idiots.

They have some really fantastic soups and pizzas and if you have the chance to try the 1886 cake, do yourself a favor and sin.

Gumbo's

Do you like rich food?  The kind that makes the side of your mouth ache?  If you do you will love Gumbo's.  I try to make it out here at least a couple of times per year.  It's located on 8th & Colorado right next to the Brown Bar which makes pre & post drinks very easy and convenient.

I would advise to use Gumbo's valet service as like Michelle mentioned, parking can be a hassle.

The last time I came, I brought my own bottle of wine and paid there modest $10 corking fee.  The esgargot appetizer here is one of the best I've ever tried.  I am huge fan of escargot and Gumbo's nails it by baking them in a garlic butter sauce.

If you are a fan of a good steak, I would recommend the Robert.  "Blackened, topped with grilled jumbo shrimp & mushroom cream sauce, served over red wine reduction"

Also their Pecan Praline Cheescake is so delicious if you've left any room by that point.  I guarantee if you stick with these three dishes you will be under the assumption that this is a 5 star restaurant.

Unfortunately, every time I try something new I am somewhat disappointed that I didn't stick to the essentials.

So much hype for this place.  I tried it THREE times because I thought maybe I was ordering the wrong things.  All three times were pretty lousy.

Lousy rice bowls
Lousy sushi
Lousy experience

Coming from Laredo, TX it took a while for me to get used to Tex-Mex.  The problem was that I compared Tex-Mex to regular Mexican food.  After living here for 7+ years I can finally appreciate what Tex-mex is.

Taco Deli my friends....

I literally made it a point to come here twice a week during lunch breaks.  It probably would have been more if my normal co-workers agreed.  They have some of the best queso in town ( a little runny, but very tasty).

The two tacos I get every time:

Mojo Fish Taco
Sirloin Mole Taco

Enjoy!
