The sound system is bangin' and the powers-that-be seem to promote the artists I listen to. I saw Dilated Peoples, Little Brother, Mos Def, Foals and a handful of others and the music was crispy. The venue is nice and intimate. I'm stoked to see Flying Lotus tonight.

I admit it gets a little sketchy since it's about 2 blocks away from crack central--but any real estate in SF is valuable real estate and it's closed to most MUNI lines and BART lines. So whatever. Plus, that's SF for you. One moment you're drinking Manhattans and gettin' fancy, the next moment some dude is slangin.

It's so hard finding a nice venue with a near-perfect sound system. Dranks cost hella though.

Documenting everyday life and big events is crucial to me. As a graphic designer, I'm pretty picky about how things turn out and at family parties or any other event, I find myself capturing everybody's else's moments but mine. That is why Kate and I sought Jon to artistically document our engagement photo session.

Kate and I asked Jon to be one of two photographers to shoot our engagement pictures. We sought Jon to capture more of the "Jeff and Kate" moments of just silliness, randomness and a bit of youthfulness since our other session captured more of the grown-up aspect. We were shot in and around Crissy Field and the Presidio in San Francisco in some pretty grimy and industrial areas. Kate, Jon and I share the same affection for grimy textures, old brick and seemingly haunted and abandoned buildings. He immediately knew what we wanted and while we had a prepared list of where we wanted to be shot, Jon was quick to adapt to find more stellar places to shoot.

It's also easy to be comfortable with Jon behind the lens since he's got an awesome personality and a great sense of humor. Interacting with Jon helped Kate and I have a lot of genuine moments of laughter which Jon documented well. There's a good mixture of goofiness, some of that passionate couple stuff, natural/casual situations, and posed stances.

He's a talented photographer and the photos turned out great. Jon pays mind to the art and craft of photography and has a great sensibility for composition, lighting and  a killer post-processing workflow.

This is  my corner store. There are corner stores on every block but this is the one I am quite attached to. They have all the quick things I need to get. If it's midnight and the future misses and I need to re-stock up on jugs of water, this is where we go. It's just a quick walk down the block on 2nd and Geary. If we want to treat ourselves to mint It's-Its, this is where we go. They're friendly, the place is clean and they have a good assortment of snacks.

This is also where a bunch of the late-night Friday bar-goers head over for a pre-party or post drunkenness. Luckily, the nice lady and man behind the counter balance the Friday night belligerence.

Trader Joe's

I'm glad they opened up a Trader Joe's not too far from home and not too bad of a drive during peak 880 traffic. Trader Joe's spoils me with wine. I hardly every want to pay more than $10 for wine anymore. The TJ Moscato for $4.99 is delicious. Wine, snacks, chocolate, and the food samples... awwww the food samples. I love when they're sampling burgers. Two samples is already a meal.

I love tea. It's a great place place with a wide variety of teas and the workers seem to know their stuff. The environment is pretty cool, a bit over designed but I guess it's just a bit too bright for my taste but it's cool. I've never seen this place quite crowded and if it were I'd stay in a bit longer to catch up on reading or have lengthy conversations with my friends.

My friends and I frequent this joint and we are always greeted by Alex or Rich. They're real good with greeting familiar faces and Rich always harasses us and talks about his plane infatuation. Anyhow, I love the atmosphere and for the most part they play the appropriate music to chill to. I stopped experimenting with different flavors and settled with regularly ordering hawaii melon, apple mint and cantaloupe.

Hawaiian melon hits pretty hard and you're left a with a numb and nice light-headed feeling. The iced tea is great and the vibe is always good.

It's a great joint to hit up on your downtime to just relax and have healthy conversations with the friends. I always spend about 10-15 a visit because of the iced tea.

Nintendo Wii

The last system to truly excite me was the N64 because it took gaming into another level. Mario 64 is my favorite Mario game (next to Mario 2 and 3). Wii is awesome. I'm addicted. My friends and I have had countless Wiikends during the winter break where we lost track of time and just played Wii Sports, Rayman and Elebits. And these are only the first generation games. Imagine what's in store for us within the next year.

Wii promotes pure video game fun. Who likes feeling left out when a bunch of your friends are playing those damn shooting games and you're just sitting in a corner sitting on your hands? Exactly. If you have 2 arms and a few functional fingers, you can play the Wii.

The PS3 was a pain to buy for the first few months because people capitalized on its demand and wanted to mark it up and sell them. Now that stores have them, not a lot of people are elbowing you in the face to get them. The Wii has been a pain to buy by true video game entertainment fans because it's simply that much fun.

Wii parties will be a hit for a long while. Pop open a bottle of some $3 Arbor Mist, snack on some pub mix, hit the power button and enjoy that quick second of that beautiful, glowing blue light that illuminates from the disc slot and enjoy some Wii fun.

Temple Coffee House

Category: Coffee & Tea
Neighborhood: Downtown

Temple is my fave coffee joint in Sac. The seating is comfortable, the atmosphere easily zones me out (or in?) when I get to work. The coffee, mochas and iced tea are awesome.

Although "Temple" is set in the Papyrus font, the interior of this place more than makes up for that; it's pretty open. It's such a comfy and relaxing environment. Temple offers a variety of seating arrangements. If you want to nestle up  in a corner to just drink coffee, listen to music, read or just catch up on your thoughts, they  have a couple of nooks. One is bar-like seating and the other is this cool, lounge-like area. There's comfy seating to read and work. There's also sofas that are perfect for just sitting down and having conversations with your friends or colleagues.

The bad: Keep the front door closed in the summer. Temple is in downtown and that alley near the coffeehouse tends to wreak of bum piss.

Tupelo Coffee House and Roasting

I love this joint. It's a great place to just sit down, relax and cozy up in a corner and just do work, read, browse the web (free wi-fi) or just meaninglessly sketch. It's near Sac State. Almost everyday of the semester I stop by before class to grab a cup of quality coffee. The mochas are a simple treat but they are awesome.

Tupelo is my odor-free fave. It's far from hostile homeless guys so it doesn't smell like bum piss when you walk in from around the corner. That's always a plus.

The seats against the wall are reclined, making it uncomfortable if you are doing hours of work that require you to sit up and stay awake and the tables have this raised tile that make it uncomfortable to type and leaves the bottom of your laptop prone to scratches.

Millenium Hilton Hotel

The hotel itself is nice and the rooms are well accomodated. The rooms have huge plasma TVs and a great, but depressing view. Outside the window is Ground Zero. Across the street from the hotel is St. Paul's. Personally, I was freaked out with all of the history that has gone on the area. Alexander Hamilton and a bunch of his friends are buried just meters away from hotel entrance. On another side, Ground Zero.

Free internet would make things more convenient and enjoyable. Another thing, it's quite easy to hear through doors. Coughs, moans, closing doors, TVs---all just a bit too easy to hear.

In terms of location, it's in lower Manhattan---just a walk away from Ellis Island, Battery Park, City Hall, Brooklyn Bridge, World Trade Center Path, and about 6-10 trains pass through there.
