I'm new to such vegan concept store. So, there were so many choices to choose from in this small little store. There were cold (seem to me) appetizers in the chiller section. Our lunch was two lunch boxes($6 each) of rice/noodle+3 items. The beehoon (vermicelli) fares better than the thick yellow noodles(mian). We tried the black bean sauce bittergourd, beancurd strips with green peppers, beancurd with celery, xue cai with edamame, braised beancurd skins, green seasonal vegetables. Also bought their tou hua(tofu hua, or soft beancurd) -comes separately with dilute ginger syrup to drench over the beancurd. The dessert mochi comes big and small. I got the big ones(5 per pack). All comes to about $20 and we did not know it comes with free soy milk. And we got our free bottle of soymilk!
Will go back for their other food stuff again. Too many things to try in just a single trip. :)
I love my taster's set of beers. I tasted 5 beers! So the next time I go bac I can order what I really like. Or maybe another taster round of 7 beers. The pizza is good.
Tried the sesame scallion pancakes (thick version) and did not like it since too little scallions. The stew beef noodles are quite good and big portions too!
Surprisingly, the food was quite good. The chow mien is fried with chives, shrimps and veg. This dish ...yummy. The zhajiang (bean sauce) noodle was average, and different from what zhajiang noodle is usually like. I guess this is Korean version since in a Korean drama I recently watched, the koreans eat the same thing. The "zhajiang" noodle is sweet and non-spicy, and because it lacks the spice, we did not like it.
Portions are huge. Nothing special about the Country Special. Did not like the biscuits with gravy as it was cold. Should have ordered pancakes instead. Maserati Omelette is d'lish.
Tried Monte Cristo sandwich before(in the Winchester location). That was good!
Really good food! Been hearing about the prawn mee here, so we must try it ! Yummy yummy!! We love the spiciness!!! The soup/"bisque" was thick, unlike those we've had before out of the U.S. I almost wanted to lick the bowl. ;p Char kway teow was also authentic, came served in a little wok, cute. Portions were reasonable, not big. So we ordered a Law Bak (came with a-char, fried beancurd, prawn vadai, and of course the law bak was what I commonly know as five-spice roll). And to help us spice up the dishes, they even serve us chilli by the side. That was thoughtful, and attending to details. Even simple beverages like the Malaysian hot coffee (kopi-si) was good.
Overall, the food was delicious and authentic. Service definitely better than Layang Layang. We really like it here and would definitely be back again.
After hearing all the good reviews about Roti Canai, we gave it a shot! Very thin, crispy and light. The curry sauce for dipping the roti "pancake" was little though (that small bowl of curry was already wiped out while we still had remaining roti "pancake"). Nasi lemak (coconut rice served with chicken rendang, boiled egg, cucumber, a-char, peanuts, and chilli anchovy) was ok, not as good as expected. Din really like the chilli anchovy. And the nasi lemak did not even come with sambal chilli by the side. Is this nasi lemak ? The kari lamb (lamb curry) was nice, though.
But, but, but...felt the service was poor. When taking orders, the waiter was like showing his "attitude"...well, not expecting a smile always on the face but at least, should have shown some enthusiasm and warmth to the customers. When the dishes were served, it was the same problem. The dishes were just placed on one side of the table, and we have to bring the dishes in front of us, by ourselves (both of us were seated on a 4-seating table, if you know what I am talking about). It happened to all our dishes when they were served. Terrible !
Overall, I think the service don't deserve any stars' rating. So on average, I give it 2.5-3 stars for the food.
Have not tried the Hainanese chicken rice when we were there the last time. Maybe that's the reason why this place did not leave a deep impression on us. The Roti Prata came more as an appetizer (that means the portions were really really small) although it could have been a main dish. Vegetable curry (sayur lodeh) was just so-so (tasted funny in fact) but we could not describe what the problem was. Fish head curry...came with salmon fish head ? Thought it was strange combination since the authentic fish head curry (back in Singapore) would have come with fish head from other fish such as snapper etc.. Maybe we would go back and try the Hainanese chicken rice.
Lunch and dinner are priced differently with the same menu. So, would go for lunch. Hard to get live lobsters in the south bay area but the lobsters in The Fish Market, Palo Alto, did not disappoint us.
Delicious roast duck ! The bittergourd with beef complements well with rice too. However, not many vegetables dishes they have here. Anyway, it's a place for ROAST everything....so who cares if we miss vegetables just for once :)
Will go back for their other food stuff again. Too many things to try in just a single trip. :)
