Big Hass BBQ

We had a very average experience at Big Hass BBQ. The ribs were dry and tough and the burger was nothing special that was overpowered by the swiss cheese.

It's nice to have a BBQ joint in central Wisconsin but I have experienced much better. The best thing was their house vinegar-based sauce.

Mogie's Pub & Restaurant

I popped into Mogies for dinner after hearing about it from a friend who attended UWEC a few years back.

I ordered up their well known Garcia burger which is a 1/2 lb cajun-seasoned patty with guacamole, salsa and sour cream and their pub fries. The burger was seasoned very well in the Cajun spice, the bark of the meat was very charred and spicy, a real treat! The salsa was equally delicious. 7.5/10

The pub fries were just your standard bar fry, nothing to write home about. 5/10

We also tried the spuds o' plenty. These little guys are large tater tots filled with cheese served with a side of ranch. Pretty good, a little something different you won't find elsewhere. 6.5/10

The vibe in Mogies is a good one. A very nice relaxed atmosphere. A great place for a burger, glass of wine or a tasty micro-brew on tap on a sunny afternoon or into the evening during the big game. I'd certainly recommend it to a friend if he or she were in Eau Claire.

Chang Garden

I stopped into Chang Garden for lunch over my Easter holiday. I was pretty excited because I've heard so many great things about Chang
Garden from others on Yelp, Twitter and my friends who live in the area.

I can easily say Chang Garden is the most beautiful Chinese restaurant I've ever dined at. The decor is truly wonderful. Wooden tables, very open and light atmosphere. The entire decor just oozes quality and attention to detail. This is something I'd expect in Chicago or Minneapolis, not Wausau. If you're looking for upscale, this is it.

I ordered up some hot and sour soup to start with some Asian ribs. The hot and sour soup was excellent. Seemed like a good quality mixture and proper melding of ingredients-- The Asian ribs came glazed in a sauce I can best describe as part sweet and sour sauce and part sweet barbecue sauce. Excellent quality meat and the bark on the ribs was
bursting with flavor!

My entree' was the schezuan beef extra spicy with steamed rice. The vegetables were grilled perfectly and the beef was filled with flavor. It was definitely spicy as I requested. The rice was done perfectly and mixed well with the dish.

Chang has quickly become my favorite Chinese hot spot. I love a good hole in the wall joint like you find in many cities, but for flare, class and outstanding food... Chang Garden is a home run!

P.S.-- They have a hibachi grill! A must try!

Bub's Brewing Co

I was traveling through Winona and I can honestly say, this is the first time Yelp has let me down. I pulled up the Yelp app on my phone and noticed Bub's Brewing Co. was the most rated and highest rated joint in town. I made my way there smiling from ear-to-ear.

The atmosphere both inside and out is fantastic. A very well setup bar and grill with a nice local Irish flavor to it. They have a few pool tables, TV's to watch the big game and a beautiful bar packed with all kinds of brews.

I read the rave reviews about their burgers and fries; how could I not order that, right? I decided on the "cb" burger, a beef patty topped with cheddar cheese, bacon and BBQ sauce. My fiancee' had the Grande, Bub's version of a chili cheese burger. We also had the Winona fries as an appetizer because again, we read about them in reviews!

I couldn't have been more disappointed with this food. I could have easily made everything we ate by going to the grocery store and busting out my gas grill. The Winona fries were nothing special at all. Cheap crinkle cut fries from a bag draped in nacho cheese sauce and then topped with powdery Cajun seasoning. The fries weren't seasoned (tossed) with the Cajun, it was simply splashed over the nacho cheese. Huh?

I knew this was a bad sign!

The burgers came and again,.more standard food prepackaged vendor food. The burgers were not handmade, they were from a box for sure. We tore the meat apart and could easily tell they were processed patties. The taste was similar to Burger King, they had a unnatural meat taste. Similar to how a thin and lifeless Whopper tastes like a "flame broiled" patty. Couldn't not get any seasoning taste at all from the meat, just this overly harsh "artificial meat" taste. The cheddar? From a processed package. The bacon? Precooked and uninspiring. The onion rings? Also could tell they were pre-made and simply fried by our cook.

Bub's takes no special care in creating their dishes. It's simply boxed food they fry, cook-through, heat up and serve to their customers. How is that special? How is that even cooking? I've had many burgers in my life, light years better than what Bub's is turning out. How in the world is this the most highly rated joint in Winona? I'm not sure what other posters are thinking with these four and five star reviews. I can't speak about their beer, it seemed like a plentiful selection, but the food is NOT WORTH IT! Garbage.

Atmosphere: B+
Beer/Bar: B+
Food: D+

Foodies, keep on moving. Nothing to see here.

Those in Winona who think Bub's is great food. Get out more!

Ruth's Chris Steak House

My fiancee' and I spent our Valentines dinner here this year and we were not disappointed!

My fiancee' had a stuffed chicken breast that was just amazing. She couldn't stop raving about it. She read it was very tasty online and the dish lived up to expectations. She also requested a martini which she found delicious. The drink was perfectly blended.

I had the Filet Mignon medium-well with a nice white Pinot Girgio out of Napa Valley. It was great. The steak was cooked to perfection and seasoned perfectly with butter, salt and pepper. It didn't need any kind of side for dipping, it was juicy and tender. It melted in my mouth.

We also had a side of mashed potatoes which were excellent. Creamy with a hint of butter. Very tasty!

We had the cheesecake for dessert and the presentation was fantastic along with the taste. A very good piece of cheesecake from top to bottom.

My fiancee' and I would recommend Ruth's Chris to anyone looking for a fantastic meal with breathtaking views of San Diego Bay. You won't be disappointed (service or food), it's all very well executed here! Don't hesitate.

Lil' Piggy's Bar-B-Q

My fiancee' and I were visiting Coronado Island for the weekend and chose Lil' Piggy's Bar-B-Q for lunch on a Sunday afternoon.

I ordered the large brisket plate (pulled) while my fiancee' tried the sliced brisket. The pulled brisket was awful, one star out of five! It was just, disgusting. Lots of fat, meat had no smoke taste at all, not even drenched liquid smoke. However, their sliced brisket was pretty good.

The two sauces they had on the table were good. Both very sweet and thick. High sugar contents for sure. One was smoky while the other was "hot".

I guess California folk think this is good BBQ. I feel sorry for you! This doesn't even compare to what we have in the Midwest, let alone the deep south.

Lil' Piggy's-- imitator that falls short of real cue.

Manny's Steakhouse

A friend and I booked a night at Manny's on a Monday evening. I ordered up the filet medium-well with two sides.

The fact that they bring a cart to your table and show you the cuts of meats available including a live lobster is really neat. An experience in itself.

The filet was uninspiring quality wise. There was some gristle and the steak arrived very, very pink. It wasn't medium-well even though I had them butterfly it. I've had much better steaks in terms of quality and taste at other fine dining establishments around the metro. ==6.5/10==

The loaded mashed potatoes were delicious. Bacon, cheese and creamy potatoes, how can you go wrong? I recommend them! ==8.5/10==

The mac-n-cheese was also pretty tasty, but the loaded potatoes ousted this Midwestern favorite by a smidgen. ==8/10==

We then ordered dessert and the waiter made sure we were aware that one dessert fed two healthy growing boys. We obliged and ordered a single piece of cheesecake. This was the highlight of the evening (kind of sad for a steak joint). The MONSTER sized piece of cheesecake was absolutely delicious. The strawberries draped over it was just an added sweet touch. ==9/10==

Be sure to get dessert if you insist on trying Manny's.

Sorry Manny's, for your prices you better step up your game!

Rooster's BBQ Deli

Category: Barbeque
Neighborhood: West Seventh

I drove all the way from western Wisconsin to get my foodie on at Roosters BBQ Deli tonight!

We walk in and it's my favorite scenery. A hole in the wall place smelling of deep friers and smoked meat; bustling with customers waiting on their take out orders. It doesn't look like much on the outside or inside, but that's a great BBQ place, is it not?  There are only two tables for dining in, so plan on take out unless you want to gamble with one of their tables being free.

==Fried Chicken==
The chicken was fantastic. It had a nice fresh thin breading that locked in the juices of the fried chicken.  The chicken was very very moist and full of flavor. My friend rated it well above KFC and other chicken places he's been to. He said it wasn't the best piece of chicken he's every had, but he said it was a solid 8 out of 10 for fried chicken. I concur. Juicy, easily pulled off the bone and tastily seasoned.  The slaw was crunchy and fresh, but not spectacular.  A solid slaw.  Recommended!

==Pulled Pork Sandwich==
Now onto the pork sandwich with hot sauce.  Whew! This baby is smoking good, pun intended.  I opened the thin silver-backed foil to see a heaping very healthy mound of slow smoked pork that was sent from heaven! You could definitely tell it was smoked low and slow, just like it should be! It was very moist and just oozing with goodness. Be sure to order extra hot sauce on your sandwich, without extra it's pretty dry, though the pork CAN stand on it's own, believe me!  Their vinegar based hot barbecue sauce is very fragrant and spiced just right. It's not overpowering over the pork and not too hot. It is the PERFECT compliment to their smoked pork.  Just a marriage from heaven!  8.5/9 out of 10 --- This is close to perfect for my taste buds...

==Sides==
Baked beans -- Never had beans like this. Very spicy. I'd call them spicy pepper baked beans.  I found them refreshingly different and tasty. Highly recommend trying these if you like spicy things.

French fries -- Very standard, but also tasty because of their seasoned salt they put on.  Recommend!

Cole Slaw -- Crunchy and fresh, light and airy.  Nothing spectacular but a solid side who love light and fresh slaw

Roll --- Standard roll from package, nothing special, but hey, it's a damn roll!

All of this and the prices are very very reasonable.  My meal cost $8.50 with a soda and the chicken dinner (2 pc) ran $9.  Very cheap.

I will be returning to Roosters!  Cock-a-doodle-doooooooooOOOO!
