O'Greenbergs
Category: Bars
Neighborhood: Noe Valley
As a visitor from the Dogpatch - I really appreciate this place. The beer on tap is good, there are usually big tables available for gatherings (with Megan D. & crew) and one time, the bartender told me I looked like Tina Fey and then gave us a leftover free pizza. Also, O'Greenbergs is steps away from Mitchell's. What's more - the jukebox has R. Kelly, weird '90s hits, and classic rock.
I would have given this place 5 stars but I do find the Wednesday night softball team dudes to be a bit rowdy, even for my tastes.

I haven't done equipment classes, but they look challenging and fun. As an added perk, the studio has hair ties, if you forget them, and little nibbly snacks near the entrance.
1) There is PBR - in cans.
2) Not a misconception - but they also carry the Juniper Gin from Anchor Steam which is *the* most delicious gin in the world. In fact, it is the only gin I will drink.
3) Though I dislike virtually all animals, especially dogs, the "open dog" policy is not out of control at Homestead. On a crowded Saturday night, there was only one, very chill dog in the place. I kind of liked that dog, which is really saying something coming from the daughter of a mailman.
4) You can play some kind of dice game to win a pool of money - also not a misconception, but cool.
5) The music in the jukebox is eclectic and awesome, not strange. I've never been in a bar with Mahalia Jackson and other old timey gospel selections and I fully support their inclusion.
All in all, this place is faaaantastic.

Noe Knit - CLOSED

Neighborhood: Noe Valley
I really enjoyed browsing through Noe Knit and found some great organic turquoise Uruguayan cotton yarn and some very macho grey merino yarn for my husband's new mathematical fibonacci scarf.
The selection is far more limited and pricier than ImagiKnit. I wish that I could blend the customer service at Noe with the selection at ImagiKnit. That would be my ideal yarn store, and I would call it - "Knitwit." (I like how knitting stores can get away with stupid punny names).

El Metate
Category: Mexican
Neighborhood: Mission
If this had been my only experience with El Metate (that's Spanish for "The Metate"), I would have given this place something along the lines of 7 stars. Unfortunately, my other experience, which was a take out al pastor burrito was subpar.
I suppose every place has its lackluster nights but I hope to return again soon for another seven star experience. Aside from the food, the service was good, all of the tables were dirty - which was gross, the decor is cute, and there is no beer - which is a tragedy. Fortunately the burritos are so good, I managed to survive without cerveza.
Also, perhaps I was a bit too sleepy/drunk to be properly aware, but I do not find this place at all "scary."
In full disclosure, Aldrich is an urban PCUSA church, and like many mainline denominations, its membership has declined and aged in recent years. Still, the place is open, earnest, and welcoming and I always enjoy going back. I've only heard the new pastor preach once, but it was an excellent and poignant sermon. My brother - a high school senior - plays the piano and sings in the worship band. That's saying something I think - that a talented high school kid would want to spend every Sunday morning playing songs at church with a lot of people who are well past high school age.
Finally, I got married here, and so did my parents, so rock on Aldrich!

New Scenic Cafe

No offense to the North Shore, but I never expected to find such a fabulous and inventive restaurant along Hwy 61. In the same vein of California cuisine with simple, stellar ingredients (a la Chez Panisse, IMO), New Scenic has mastered North Shore cooking.
Although it's been several months, I still remember my perfect roast chicken with vegetables, cherries, and a cream sauce gravy. The salad we split was awesome and included grapes, cheeses, baby greens, and delicate, crunchy pieces of phyllo dough. It was one of the best salads I've ever had. I was also favorably impressed by the wine list, the unobtrusive service, and the dessert, a panna cotta trio, full of fresh, fresh berries.

I've always loved the DPS. It is a clean, surprisingly friendly bar, with snacks and very clean bathrooms that have trivia on the walls. The bartenders are sweet, you can apparently play Keno, and the jukebox gives you four songs for a dollar.
Last night - the DPS achieved new heights of awesomeness. First off, the bartender, Michael, decided he loved our group and gave us INSANE deals on (typically unavailable) pitchers of Anchor Steam. I believe we got 4 HUGE pitchers plus 4 beers for $40. Also, Michael did not want us to leave, so he locked the doors. Bizarre, but hilarious. He also encouraged us to dance to tunes from Pulp Fiction and one of us cut a rug with Michael on the impromptu dance floor.
If I could give DPS 7 stars, I would.
