Sycamore

Categories: Bars, Florists
Neighborhood: Flatbush

5 star rating

LUV LUV LUV this place!  Found Sycamore while looking for a bar in Ditmas Park and was this a pleasant surprise.  From the outside, the front of the bar catches you as it's a flower shop set up, but then you look beyond and see lots and lots of whiskey bottles lined up on shelves.

How often do you find a bar that has a flower shop setup?  This might be the only one in the city, if not the country that has this arrangement (no pun intended).

The vibe is very chill and the prices are definitely reasonable.  Their whiskey selection I would say is probably on par with the one you'll find at Fette Sau in Wiliamsburg.

There is a backyard and it's pretty decent sized.

There's also a basement where live bands perform, how cool is that?!

I highly recommend Sycamore, you won't be disappointed!

Purple Yam

Mabuhay! Chalk up a new Filipino restaurant to the mix.

Purple Yam is a cozy spot in Ditmas Park, about a 30 minute subway ride from lower Manhattan.  They have some classic Filipino dishes like Adobo, Kare Kare, and Pancit.  But they also serve up some Korean dishes like Kimchi and Korean Meatballs.  They do have San Miguel beer and an alcoholic Calamansi drink.

The service is good, but we were a bit rowdy.  If you do go with a group, try the family style route so that everyone can try something.

I would say that at Purple Yam, you'll definitely get your moneys worth.  And be sure to say hi to Romeo, one of the owners.

Move over Fette Sau, you've got some company with Hill Country.

Hill Country reminds me of the Billyburg BBQ spot, but on a scale that's about 100x bigger!  The set up at HC is the same as FS, you go up to a counter and order how much meat by the pound you want.  Then there's another counter where you order sides.  Although HC doesn't have the massive amount of whiskey, rye that FS has, HC does offer Lone Star beer (yes, I know it's not on the same par, but it's nice to know a place that sells Texas beer, not that I'm from Texas or anything).

Be careful in how much food to order, the price can really add up.  Better to go as a group.

Also, there's a downstairs area where bands perform.  I didn't see one the night that I went this week, but perhaps next time.

So in closing, go to HC if you like BBQ.  You won't be disappointed.

Tu Casa Restaurant

A colleague highly recommended this place because the only spanish food restaurant that I would frequent is Latin Cabana on Austin Street, until now.

Tu Casa is a good spot, the people are friendly, the service is relatively fast, and the food definitely hits the spot.

I ordered the carne guisado (beef stew) with tostones.  Dee-lish! So good that after I finished dinner (I ordered take out) I subsequently went to bed 15 minutes later or so.

Oh, and if you try the tostones, they give you two kinds of sauce, garlic and this tangy green sauce.  I don't know what they put in the green sauce, but it's got that something!

If you like steak, then you need to go here. It's a nice "hole in the wall" in that you wouldn't tell it's a good restaurant until you have a dining experience here.

The restaurant has other items than steak.

Definitely try the avocado fries, you will not disappointed, promise.

Service is great, seems like every staffer will stop by your table and ask if everything is ok.

My only knocks with the place are that there is only one bathroom, and it's a cash only spot, but they do have an ATM.

Flatiron Lounge

I've been here a couple times but this is my first Yelp review. Flatiron Lounge is a good spot for drinks.  Has that ambiance that just reeks of, "ok you're in a special place." They have a good drink menu and the servers are friendly.  However, the bar is a bit loud so you'll need to speak up.  Not conducive if you're looking for a good "date spot."

The servers are friendly and the sushi is good. The edamame was overcooked, the shumai was good. There's a good vibe at Mizu. One critique I had was the music was played a bit too loud.

You get a lot of sashimi and sushi. Good quality. The price is a bit pricey. Really don't like to background music. What is this, a club?!

Good peeps good food. What more can you ask for?

Went here last night and we sat in the backyard, which had a very chill feeling.  For drinks I got the Bare foot, which is overproofed rum and coconut juice. Apps, we got the cheese and fruit platter and jerk chicken wings.  For dinner, I got the grilled salmon, which was good but too many little pieces of veggies. I know, veggies are good for you, but the appearance made it look really busy.

I enjoyed our dining experience last night and would go back.

Prob the best sushi spot in NYC (note I've yet to visit Blue Ribbon or Nobu yet).

The sushi is like butter and so good. The staff is very friendly and the service is on point.  It's a BYOB place and cash only so remember that.
