This is the best brunch I've found in West Seattle and nearby. The chicken fried steak here is 10x better than the Chelan's, the potatoes are worth coming back for.

Last time I was in though, I got no service for a good bit of time and ended up walking out. I haven't been back, hence the three stars. I'm a service snob. We went steadily for probably 3 months, at least one weekend morning a week, and now I haven't been for about 3 months.

I miss it, and I'll probably go back soon and hopefully get better service.

Man oh man, I didn't think guys were supposed to like bubble tea.

Check it, the "artist's duet" is an espresso based bubble tea that is AWESOME!.

This place has free wi-fi, comfy couches, friendly counter staff and a convenient location (at least to me). The sandwiches (bahn mi style) are fantastic, and from what I hear, the crepes are as well.

I have to hold on tight to the steering wheel as I drive by to keep from pulling into Pearls twice a day...

Great place.

I really like this place. Always well produced coffee, tasteful and not too loud music, huge tables and outdoor seating!

Good times.

QFC Quality Food Center

This is the worst supermarket in West Seattle.

This QFC terribly understaffed, ridiculously overpriced (unless you are buying coke and "mac n' cheese"), often poorly merchandised (empty shelves, missing prices, poor selections), is under lit, and really is just a dump.

I'd rather go to the even MORE overpriced Thriftway that is farther away, than stop at this store. No more.

This is the best restaurant I've found between the ocean and Seattle. Good food, great service, VERY reasonable prices, small town atmosphere. I don't really have anything too bad to say. Good stuff.

Stayed here last weekend. Not a bad little place and what I considered to be a great value. $50/night for a very soft but decent bed, world's smallest TV (but a big channel selection), cute antique-y furniture, and green bathroom fixtures. We stayed in one of the rooms on the outside, but there are a number of rooms in the house and two cottages detached from the building.

Located on the main drag into Westport, it's a 3 minute drive to the beach, probably a 15 minute walk. They allow dogs, so my beloved Riley was able to stay with us and meet the ocean for the first time. The main supermarket is a stone's throw away, and there are decent bars within walking distance.

The owner is a informative and talkative man, completely interested in helping his guests find the right activity for them. Very chilled out atmosphere! They allow guests to use the downstairs portion of the main house to hang out it. I would gather that in the winter, it's probably a fantastic place to sit in front of the fire and play cards before bed. Too much daylight in the summer to do that though, so we didn't take advantage of it.

All in all, I'd go back, recommend to a friend, and recommend it to you.

Puma Outlet

3 star rating

Man, two weeks ago this would have been a 5 star rating. This place used to have some shoes that were really, really marked down. I own probably 6 pair of Puma, most purchased at this outlet, and most far below retail price.

But, I guess things have changed or I had a bad trip. Last weekend when we went they had absolutely nothing that was any decent amount below retail. I was barely greeted (it was an on my way out goodbye) and was unimpressed at the general cleanliness of the store.

This used to be a must stop anytime we traveled north of the city, now, probably not so much.

Zippy's Giant Burgers

Category: Burgers
Neighborhood: West Seattle

2 star rating
 6/23/2008
Of course the main reason to ever eat out is the food. While the ambience in Zippy's is fun, the wait isn't too long and the service is friendly, I found their burgers to be seriously lacking, especially after the rave reviews here.

We went over the weekend, parking was fine for us at that time, but it was late. After we pulled in, we took a look at the menu and ordered. Our food took around 10 minutes, long for a fast food burger, but this isn't a fast food joint. I found the wait to be acceptable, and one person explained the reason for the longer than normal wait and apologized from the kitchen, that was a nice touch.

The selection of sodas is awesome, can't really say much more than that. Good choice to bring in other options.

However, when we got home, I couldn't believe the quality of the burger. All slopped together, no care taken, laden with a thick sauce and lacking any real pizazz. My meat was overcooked slightly (not always a bad thing I guess) and I kept thinking that I'm not getting anything special here, just mediocre burgers and fries.

I feel kinda bad giving it a two, but new businesses should really be focused on creating a great product consistently and being able to replicate it day in and day out to create long-term, committed clientele. A few weeks ago, we stopped by to a sign in the window telling us that they were out of product...huh? Of all things, don't run out of product. We took the time to patronize the business, went to the website to check the hours, and showed up with plenty of time left, but to a closed shop. The cash only thing is really dumb. I'm fine paying a couple of cents extra to use my card. Don't find another way to keep me away.

I WILL be going back, because I refuse to let a local, new, pretty cool burger shop turn me off after only one visit. If they're out of product again though, that's it...

Chelan Cafe

Categories: Breakfast & Brunch, Diners
Neighborhood: West Seattle

5 star rating

Since moving to West Seattle this has become my favorite place. Filled with blue-collar regulars and the occasional family, this restaurant oozes typical diner fare and typical diner service. I'm a chicken fried steak addict, and although I think they undersalt their gravy, the rest of the dish is excellent. The service is typically prompt and nice, but can be a little slow if they are packed. If you are patient it should be fine, grab a paper out front if there are lots of people ahead of you.

On busy Saturday and Sunday mornings, you will get faster service if you head straight for the bar instead of waiting for dining room service. It's a bit louder, but is certainly more homey and fun. You can hear the drunken conversations of sailors and longshoremen as they enjoy their drinks.
