Liquid Sushi Bar

I came here when they first opened and its also a teppanyaki bar, but it was pretty empty. Someone said this place was good so I decided to give it a try. Between two people a few of the dishes ordered included raw beef carpaccio as well as some tataki's and finally a few rolls.

The raw items here are usually very chewy which leads to feelings of unfreshness so I wasn't really a huge fan. They had way too much mayo on the raw beef for it to be good and I thought the tataki could have been more flavorful. Their rolls were just normal. I think if I were to come here just to get rolls it would probably be okay. Otherwise its not really a notable sushi place in San Mateo given so many other great alternatives that cost less.

Must have been my drunken state of mind, I totally forgot about my super late night trip to this awesomely open late joint that is perfect for drunken food!

I have to say, although I missed out on the famous breakfast burrito that they had since I didn't really read all the reviews at all, I did get their hamburger to share with my bf and their delicious fries. First of all this place is DIRT CHEAP! I got the biggest "small" fries I've seen + a huge hamburger for $5.36 tax included. That's a meal deal even McDonalds big macs can't beat. They are CASH ONLY so be aware of this when you go. They have a pretty extensive menu for the discerning eater and if the bf was more lactose tolerant I would have tried their cheeseburger instead.

The hamburger was pretty good but the fries were amazing and I'm not even a fries person! Definitely a great place near Cal Tech to grab a few bites any time of the day.

Library Bar

I was a little skeptical of this place due to its downtown location (i.e. parking disaster) and some of the recent less-than-stellar reviews, but I decided to give it a try anyway with a group of 19+ people on a Saturday night. For the first time in my life I felt the throb of the heart of LA i.e. the beating heart of people around you while you wait in line in the cold to get into a BAR.

However, once inside, this place is swanky as it is cool. The bathrooms are nice, wide and clean and the bartenders (at least the guys) are super nice and attentive. The first female bartender that took our order kept messing up, missing orders and dropped a whole glass of beer on me because she threw the glasses around after she filled them up. I think she was a little stressed but honestly you're working in this type of environment you must be used to it by now ...

They play non-hip hop which is nice.

Otherwise the drinks there were downtown LA prices and the bookshelves were nice. There's almost nowhere to sit unless you get in early and stick to it, but I still liked the ambiance and would definitely come back. They validate for the garage across 6th from them so good deal. They also serve food which I've seen seems to be good and they have amazing beers on draft (think Lost Coast Tangerine Wheat! MMMMM). Definitely a great nightowl spot.

I came here on a reservation of 10+ people which was upped from 6 people from two days earlier on Saturday night. I was a little surprised at the bluntness on the phone I received when I called in and apologized to to having to change the reservation number on them. I was rudely moved back an hour from my original reservation time with no sincerity of trying to get us in any earlier at all.

I arrived with my full party on time (rare in itself!) and told the hostess that we were all here and would like to see if we could get seated earlier. She looked at me and said there is absolutely no way. With about 45 minutes to kill we decided to walk to the wine detective nearby to grab some drinks as we also asked about the bar seating and the hostess rudely said "people are enjoying their dinner there, you can't go in" ... what? What kind of a place does not allow you to hang out at the bar before dinner?

A short 15 minute walk later, I had left them my number, we were at the wine detective enjoying the atmosphere, when I got a call saying my reservation was ready (30 minutes before the original time) ... yet when I left they said there would be NO WAY that it would be ready before 8:30. what the heck? Our party dragged ourselves all the way back and I was thoroughly disappointed in their service.

The waiter took a long time to come back for our orders and did not refill our waters as often as I thought they should. The empanadas were good, but that's about it. I think most of my party enjoyed the food but there was nothing Argentine about my ribeye garlic steak which was tough and chewy. Some people had inconsistently cooked steak and my bf's brother had a burnt steak. I am a little disappointed at this place, maybe I will have to spend less money next time to get the skirt steak.

Overall it was okay at best and I don't think I'll be coming back.

No joke about these sea salt caramels. Quite possibly the most expensive but best tasting thing you would have ever experienced in the life of lives. You will find many sea salt caramels at Little Flower Candy Company but their most popular is just their standard size. A small bag will cost you almost $7. A life's fortune for some pieces of candy. But a life's fortune well spent!

This is definitely a must stop and next time I'm in town I will be sure to rob a bank like the previous reviewer suggested and buy them out!

I didn't really think of much when I came here and even looking at the menu was not so impressed. Granted I came on a lazy Sunday afternoon so they ran out of their famous roast beef and some other breads that are popular items of the day. The place looked almost dingy small and I definitely started to let my hopes down. The lady in line in front of me told us that their sandwiches are great and I proceeded to order their turkey on multigrain bread. My bf got their turkey on the cranberry walnut bread and so did his brother (except he got salmon).

The sandwiches are definitely not big but for me they were plenty meaty indeed. The bread was OMGOSH heaven. This is what really hit the five star mark for me because although the sandwich was good, it was good flavored and many people / places can make a delicious sandwich ... but their breads are just absolutely amazing. They're the perfect amount of hard / flavorful crunch around the crust (even for a crust hater like me!) and the inside is SO soft and moist and full of flavor. The cranberry walnut bread is ESPECIALLY notable here because I ended up with a sliced loaf that was gone by the end of my 5 hour drive back to the bay. MMM mm good!

This is definitely a quaint little place and the whole wine bar concept is VERY cool indeed. This place is a little hidden and difficult to find if you are not familiar with the area like I was not but once you find it there is definitely no mistake that there is a good time to be had here. They have a good variety of wines in these awesome wine dispensers in the middle of the room and quite a few tables / candles / mood lighting elsewhere for you to enjoy the wines.

You walk in and you are greeted warmly by the staff whom explain that you put down your credit card to open a tab and you get a wine glass. You also get a debit card to use and every time you have a taste of one of their many wines from the dispenser, you swipe the debit card and it 'charges' you of how much you drink. So technically you can drink for as much or little as you like!

In the end you only get charged what you drink and there's obviously no time limit. What a cool idea, too bad our party had to jet early to go back to our reservations, otherwise would have been here a LOT longer!

Central Coast Surfboards

I thought this place was pretty neat since it held so many surf boards and it's rare for a surf shop to really know their stuff! I usually run into surf shop staff that are too lazy or think too highly of themselves to explain something simple to me because I don't really understand it or they don't really know what I'm talking about and don't really bother with me at all.

I like that they have a variety of, get this, board shorts. Okay call me out but I have the hardest time finding board shorts and I hate those that PacSun carries because they're always too loose or too snug or I am just not a Roxy girl ... but this place is perfect :) great selection.

Urban Outfitter

This is your typical Urban Outfitters location with a whole bunch of mess everywhere you go and hard to find anything in here. However, I have to credit this store with some organizational ability as their sales are only confined to one section and are not all on hard to reach, high racks that you can barely see anything off of. Granted they really had nothing good in the store here, but they had plenty of cool stuff on sale outside in the home decor area. The register only consists of three lines so it might get crowded on some days when there's a big sale and I can only imagine what Black Friday would be like, but otherwise it holds most of the things you'd normally find.

One complaint is that they lack typically XS and S sizes.

I'm surprised that this place got bad reviews considering they're probably one of the coolest Surf / Snowboard shops I've been to. First of all, the mix is a little unusual as I don't typically see this kind of mix in a store that sells everything from skateboards and snowboards to surf boards and normal clothes / snow clothes. They have a very knowledgeable and helpful staff who aren't lazy and willing to look something up for you if you have a question they can't answer. They don't particularly have awesome deals but they carry some top name snowboards and gear and have some combo deals on them as well. Good place to come for recommendations if you don't know much about snowboards.
