Showcase Laundromat

Ok, so at first I was totally confused by this place - $5 for a relatively small washer? You've GOT to be kidding me?!

Only after I had sucked it up and paid $6.50 for a washer that would actually fit all my clothes (and spent $3 on the card, and then put $20 on it...) Only after all of this did I realize that the dryers are free.

Says it all over the damn place, so maybe I just can't read, I don't know.

But yeah, with free dryers, the cost all comes out in the wash (HA, see what I did there?) and I'd say it probably ends up being a bit less expensive than the place I used to go.

Obvious pro's: Right next to Starbucks & Anton's, so you can actually follow the "DRY CLEAN ONLY" instructions on your clothes, without too much extra hassle.  And be well caffeinated while you do so.

My pro-tip, however, that I'm super reluctant to share because I like my peace and quiet, is to suck it up and do your laundry here before work.  They open at 6 and there are few people insane enough to take advantage of that fact.  Be one of them, and you won't have to put up with the crowds and the screaming children who are an unfortunate fixture during the after-work crowd.

Solid place to grab a beer after work.

We got there a little early and were able to grab a coveted table for our group of 6 or so.  Our waitress was nice, I think she even humored us and took a picture of everyone.  As far as I could tell, the beer selection was pretty good. I generally stick to cider and I think they only had Woodchuck, which seemed even sweeter than normal to me, but that's hardly their fault.

Apps were good, and there were lots of them, both in portion size and menu options.

Only regret? We didn't order the bucket of pigs in a blanket.  I'm not sure how such a gross oversight happened, but I'm sure we'll remedy it next time we stop in.

The woman who runs this place is a total sweetheart.  You can tell she takes pride in what she does, and it's clear that she cares about her customers and wants to make sure they leave happy.

I stopped in for a quick manicure before a business trip last month and I'm seriously regretting the fact that I haven't been back since.  My nails looked great, and she checked in each step of the way to make sure that they were shaped the way I wanted, the right length, the color was still good, etc etc.

For $10 or $11, this was definitely one of the best, longest lasting, manicures I've had.

If you work in the neighborhood, you know there are quite a few places to pop in for a quick manicure - Bromfield's is definitely worth a try.

Harvard Square Acupuncture and Massage

The massage therapist I was working with here (the lovely Alli Ross) has cut back her hours significantly in recent months, but I still wanted to review this place because everyone I've met here has been nothing but kind and genuinely passionate about helping people.

If you're looking for someplace for true massage therapy & care, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better group of practitioners.  It's not a spa, but the bodywork here is way better, and the prices are less expensive. Plus - when you're done, you can walk your totally relaxed self right across the street to BerryLine for a little frozen yogurt.  You'll feel just as pleased with yourself as if you'd spent a bunch of money for some upscale place downtown.

Also, and I hesitate to say this because it's hard enough to get an appointment with her as is...BUT, if Alli starts taking more hours again, do try and get in to see her.  I promise you will not regret it.

Penzey's Spices

This place is like heaven.

Seriously. I think if heaven exists, it will involve having an endless supply of different types of cinnamon and vanilla to just smell.

Penzey's doesn't have an *unlimited* supply of either, but they've got more options than I've ever seen.  I walked out with their signature cinnamon, as well as a bottle of vanilla, even though I was initially only going to get a few small gifts for coworkers.

I'm not much of a cook, so I can't really speak to all the rubs and spices they had for meat, but it seemed like they had something for just about everything.  If you're into that sort of thing (meat, grilling, what have you) I'd check it out.

It's a bit of a hike without a car, but I have a feeling I'll be spending some quality time on the bus to come out here again.

Oh, special bonus 6th star (if I could!) for the free hot chocolate mix they gave me.  Yum!

Yelp Elite Event at Scampo

Many, many thanks to Leighann and the wonderful folks at Scampo for putting together this event for us, it was a trifecta of Elite-event goodness: Great food, great drinks, great atmosphere!

My guest and I stuck around for a bit afterwards and ordered some pizza to help soak up some of the Ultimat we had imbibed--it was absolutely delicious.

I've had drinks at the hotel before, but never food--next time we head over there, I'll be recommending drinks & apps at Scampo.

Last thing: I might be super lame, but it was really nice to have a Yelp event that didn't have me wanting to bail early because my feet hurt.  I'm not saying I'm not totally complicit in that (I could wear flats, right?) but I liked the more casual vibe.

All told, a wonderful way to say goodbye to summer!

I really enjoyed this place, and I love that it's so close to my office.  I will be back, and I will be taking my coworkers with me next time.

After reading all the reviews, I convinced the table to try the truffle fries.  We were not disappointed.  I would definitely like to get the brie next time though.

I had the pear salad, which was excellent. Candied hazelnuts. Who knew those existed?

Also delightful: French 75 Martini. Do it. You will not regret the decision.

Skip: the raspberry margarita. Too sweet.

I left dinner feeling full, but not TOO full.  My friends all had burgers and were left with that, ugh I ate too much icky-ness, so you might pass on those.

I'll be back to try the gnocchi and brie. Also more French 75's.

Teele Square Café - CLOSED

I was a big fan of Soliel Cafe, and was very sad to see it go. (RIP, best eggplant parm in the history of ever).  Being a devotee of Soliel, I was naturally apprehensive about Teele Square Cafe--what if it didn't live up to my expectations?

Turns out I had no reason to be concerned.

Things I love about Teele Square Cafe:

1. The breakfast sandwiches are exceptional.  Even better than Magnificent Muffins & Bagels.  I am something of a connoisseur of breakfast sandwiches, so I don't just throw around words like "exceptional".

2. The portobello & fontina sandwich.  I cannot say enough about how delicious this is. Almost makes up for the fact that I will never eat one of those amazing eggplant parms again.

3. THE BROWNIES.  The brownies are deceptive. They're just sitting there, chilling out on the counter.  But lots of places have brownies on the counter, and lots of those brownies suck.  These brownies do not suck.  These brownies are amazing, and I have been known to walk up to Teele Square for the sole purpose of acquiring more of them.

I'm also pretty excited about the fact that they have Christina's ice cream now--I haven't tried it yet (here, anyway), but I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

Kickass Cupcakes

Man, yelpers love to hate on this place, and this place kind of loves to hate on yelp too.  Isn't that what they call a "negative feedback loop"?

I've been living in Davis for over a year now, and I just went to this place a few weeks ago.  I had a lemon cupcake with white chocolate frosting and I was not disappointed.

Was it the most succulent cupcake I've ever consumed? No. Was it wretched? No.  It was tasty, in a three star kind of way.

I might come back and visit if I get hit with a cupcake craving, and it's a cute place to take friends who think cupcake stores are only for New Yorkers.

Stopped in here last Friday night and though the whole experience was delightful.  What movie is that? Oh. Marie Antoinette. Perfect.

I kept it simple: vanilla cupcake, chocolate frosting.  I was not disappointed.  I thought the frosting was great--I understand why they sell "shots" of it.

The various flavors were all pretty tempting; I'm sure I'll be back for more.
