Old Schoolhouse Bed & Breakfast Front St

I feel terrible that I'm just now writing a review of this place.

If you're a cyclist, this is highly recommended, as Steve the owner is a cyclist and can provide advice and more. He rode up with us to the Mcdonald Observatory and back and helped us fix our bike rack.

Definitely one of the best B&Bs we've stayed in.  Of course B&B is different and more intimate that a hotel - hopefully you know that. So yes you may be forced to talk to the people in the other rooms!  In this case, it was fortunate that one of the other guests had brought his bike and accompanied us on our bike ride.

Breakfast was excellent, and the hosts are friendly but will give you space if you want it, I think.  The building is a wonderful old thick-walled stucco schoolhouse with high ceilings.  We stayed in the winter and it snowed one morning but we were plenty warm inside - I'm sure those thick walls keep it very cool in warm weather too.

Michelle Hittner rocks.  She is a great massage therapist and a great person.  If you are an athlete, or a rocker, she'll do what it takes to make you feel better.

This review is being written about 2008-era Cafe Saint EX.

Great spot in an awesome neighborhood - of course if it's nice outside, sit outside... brunch is a good option.  The bar/dance floor downstairs is cool - only went there to drink.

I have to say I hope the same pastry chef is still there - look for the honey-infused goat cheese cheesecake - the BEST cheesecake I've had as an adult.

Loved this place when we lived in DC - it's the perfect combination of quaint and sophisticated, cozy yet elegant.  That goes for the unique building and interior and the food.   And it attracts a good mix of people for good people watching.

Yup, this place is definitely to be avoided if possible. But life has been crazy and schedules don't always accommodate driving somewhere or remembering to bring your lunch.

The breakfast stuff is fine - it's hard to mess up breakfast. And I like the healthier breakfast tacos - wheat tortillas, turkey bacon, and egg.  My coworker gets oatmeal a lot so I guess it's passable.

DO NOT eat the sushi.  I was able to taste the preservatives they use - nasty.

For lunch, the most reliable option are the custom sandwiches, but I don't recommend the potato chips that they offer up. They taste stale.

I tend to go for hot food, but the hot food section (where they have pasta and rice dishes and cooked veggies) is very unreliable.  One chicken dish I tried had what tasted like a whole jar of capers in the one serving.

I hear that other buildings' cafeterias are better, but that may be a perception "the grass is always greener."

The staff is always very nice, at least, and they let me exchange a Vitamin Water that I thought tasted like cough syrup.

Sushi Nini

Sushi Nini is solid enough and passes the test for lunch in Round Rock.

I discovered only recently that if I get the 9.99 lunch special, i need to order the Blue Midnight roll, which will be filling enough (with the gyoza) that I don't necessarily have to order any additional sushi.  But maybe I just wasn't as hungry as usual.

Anyway, it's not super fast but it's not unreasonably slow, and the staff is nice enough.  It's great that I've never had to wait for a table, either, and the decor doesn't have the pretention of Beluga, down the road - it's pretty basic but clean.

This is a chain that is a bit hit or miss on the quality of the meats - that is a given; you can read the other reviews for that.

We went here with a large group (20 something people) in their group meeting space.  The waitstaff seemed overwhelmed a bit.  They looked a bit like deer in headlights.  One of the members of our party got her meal after most of us had gotten through most of ours.  Another person ordered a Mexican martini and received a standard margarita, and the staff seemed not to know the difference.

So my point is, if you're going to take a big group here, you should be aware of these issues.  Unfortunately, there don't seem to be very many options in this part of town.  We chose this place because it was close to the Omni and Holiday Inn where we were staying the night before the MS150 bicycle ride to Austin.  But since you have to drive everywhere in Houston anyway, it might be worth driving somewhere else.

Tecolote Farm

We just started our second season using their CSA - Community-Supported Agriculture program.  We get a basket of fresh veggies every week, that we pick up from a neighbor's porch.  The season should last through August.  In the first two weeks, we have gotten mixed lettuces, butter lettuce, spinach, fresh garlic, mustard greens, turnips, leeks, radishes (2 varieties), kohlrabi, broccoli rabe, and Italian parsley.  It works out to about $30 a week.

It is a challenge to eat/use all of the veggies - we share with friends/ neighbors, and we also have gotten very creative with our juicer.  We should start seeing tomatoes and some more root vegetables soon. It's great because we get creative and eat new vegetables - I had never eaten a turnip or a kohlrabi before, and they can actually be pretty good.  I've found that roasting is a great and easy way to cook vegetables (until it gets really hot out and i don't want to turn the oven on).

Hoa's review indicates a waiting list - that used to be the case, but I guess with the economy, not as many people are subscribing.  If you're interested you should contact the farm.  Or of course you can buy from them at the Downtown Farmers Market.

In general, I was not terribly impressed with the food in Terlingua.  This place had pretty good green pork chile. Nice folks despite the tourist onslaught.  Definitely full of locals.  The ambience - well I definitely wouldn't call it that.  Kinda dirty... so don't go to Terlingua to visit this place. Just consider it an option for some reasonably decent Mexican food and burgers.

Yummy food but beware - they may run out of said food on busy (for them) days. We had good coffee, cinammon roll, and the *last* breakfast taco (they had been open less than an hour and ran out of tacos...?)

Everything seems to be made from scratch, excellent.. Just limited options. I think when we walked by around 1 or 2 they had exhausted all of their supplies for the day and closed shop (normal hours until 3 pm, I believe).
