Celestial Seahorse

Make a watsu session at Celestial Seahorse a gift for someone you love -- including yourself! It is a one-of-a-kind experience that I recommend wholeheartedly.

Watsu is a massage performed in water (water shiatsu, get it?), and Trudy of Celestial Seahorse has been a practitioner since 1997. The pool at Celestial Seahorse is a salt water pool that is a perfect temperature, and it is surrounded by plants, candles, soft lighting, art, and music to begin your relaxation the moment you arrive. Then Trudy begins her magic, and you are completely transported. As you float and Trudy guides your movement, you can let go of all your tension in a way that a massage on dry land can simply not allow. You imagine yourself a sea creature or a heavenly body...thus the name Celestial Seahorse!

In my personal experience, I was pregnant and made an amazing connection to my baby, in a way I don't know how to describe but would wish for every mom-to-be.

(While in the interest of full disclosure I should mention that I know Trudy personally, please know that I have received a watsu massage from her and honestly believe in my 100% positive review of the experience!)

Yelpers, this is a call to action. Get off of your computer and into Karma. I am tired of being the only one eating there, and I'm starting to worry that my patronage alone, no matter how loyal, will not be enough to sustain the place!!

I like a lot about Karma, but let me try to boil it down for you, busy reader. One star each for:

1) Vegetarian options abound. We're not talking just a couple of  "can get without chicken" or "can substitute tofu" dishes. In fact, this is the only place I recall seeing vegetable potstickers as an option on the menu.

2) Presentation:

Try a curry dish!! My favorite hands-down is the green curry. Served in an individual bubbling cauldron, the presentation is definitely not over-hyping the contents, which are a deliciously complex blend of flavors.

If I'm in the mood to switch it up, I go for one of the Karma Wok options listed on the back of the menu. Again, I love the unique presentation in a compartmentalized tray. Choose your meat or tofu, and your sauce.

3) Pleasant, prompt service, without being intrusive.

4) Reasonable prices.

5) You can get a bottle of Tiger, a Singapore beer. :)

Only downside I have is the darkness. It's okay for lunch, when there is good deal of natural light filtering in. But I'd prefer it to be a wee bit brighter in the evenings. That's just me.

Bottom line, I hope to see you there next time!

Edible pizza, but nothing to write home about. In fact, I didn't really feel it was worthy of a review, but somebody keeps hounding me to "write more," so here go it's three stars.

I don't think this is an eat-in establishment. Strictly delivery.

A couple of things would really help this little establishment out.

1) Get a better phone. The one they're using from --apparently-- 1964 puts so much static on the line, I am amazed I was able to complete a conversation.

2) Put some spice in their red sauce. After ordering the breadsticks, I momentarily thought that someone had mischieviously replaced my "marinara" with parsley-sprinkled tomato substitute.

Okay pizza.

Salad is reminiscent of Wendy's.

Eating there? The time I tried this I was pretty disappointed. There was no service after taking my order, the place seemed dingy in spite of it's relative newness, and a pet peeve of mine: plastic eating utensils.

I haven't been too inclined to go back, since I am so fond of my other options.

Yeah, delivery is good, but the Enzo's fellas are so nice, and amazingly cool considering the brisk business, that eating there is quite pleasant in spite of the lackluster surroundings.

Order your booze/beer at PS Lounge, connected Enzo's via a convenient hole in the wall (what could be more apropros?), and sit down to the best darn veggie chef salad you could hope for.

The thin crust pizza is quite delicious, as well. I recommend the Spinacchi for veggies, and the End for omnivores.

Just invoke Charlie's guarantee if you're not completely satisfied.

Be forewarned! Closed on Tuesdays!

Do not go here for custom framing.

Nope, never, just don't do it.

What's that? You got a 50% coupon in the mail? You're thinking of ignoring my advice? You poor sap!!

Even with the coupons, this place is a total rip off. I brought a couple of cheap ass prints to get framed and they quoted me $300 for the two of them (NOTE! for the TWO of them), but said I should come back the next day to get the best coupon deal. I went back the next day and they said it was going to be $600, $300 EACH. I was about to walk out, but my man just wanted to get the damn things framed before we had family in town, and they promised it by then. So, in spite of my protests, we left them with the prints.

The date passed and they never called. We called and they said "Soon." We called a week later and they still hadn't done it. We finally went down there and got our prints back. They hadn't even started the project. No excuses were given, but they did refund our money.

If I were you, I wouldn't bother.

Jim 'N Nick's Bar-B-Q

The number one thing that Jim 'n Nick's has going for it is the fact that they make so much of their own stuff on the premises. I am a fan of fresh food!! To me, it makes a big difference and bumps it up a notch. Having to wait for those cheddary mini-muffin things is worth it since I know they're literally coming out of the oven.

Number 2: I also very much enjoy the 90 Shilling they have on tap.

Third, ask for your pulled pork sandwich "Memphis Style" to get some mighty tasty cole slaw on top. Extra yummy.

Disappointments include: hit-or-miss service, and a very limited pie selection: lemon, pecan, coconut cream, and chocolate (although I can personally recommend the chocolate).

They are the best option in Northfield, so long as you avoid the mad dinner rush and hit them at a calmer time.

Update - 7/8/2008
NEW! Oblio's is now open for lunch, with both hot and cold sandwiches on the menu! That, the bowl of water for my dog on the patio, and a Smithwick's on tap all add up to plenty of reasons to get me out of the house and into Oblio's!

For cozy, warm charm, you just can't beat my house.  So when I am hosting an intimate get-together in front of the television, I don't leave the menu up to chance. I call Oblio's to cater the event. With just a half an hour's notice, they are happy to bring any special order pizza to my door at no extra cost.

This is not a thin crust pizza, it's a chewy yummy bread topped with sauce (I recommend the red, but they offer white or BBQ) and cheese and goodies. I tend to get the Sixties Special ("The tunes: Day Dreamin' & My Girl; The Times: Mayor Daily & Mini Skirts; The Munchies: Italian Sausage & Pepperoni Pizza") or the Santa Cruizin' (Artichoke hearts, minced garlic, Roma tomatoes, and red onion).

For a truly special occasion (such as Monday night) add a Nicolo's Mediterranean Salad (chicken, black & green olives, tomatoes, mushrooms and crumbled blue cheese) and their pretty damn good cannolis.

If only they'd bring a pint to my door, too.... but I don't mind going to them occasionally.

Summer Hill Market

F*** $5 foot longs, man. Why bother when for 99 more cents you can get a lovingly crafted sandwich from Summer Hill Market (formerly Fred's Fine Meats)? This is Hilltop's little secret, but I'm letting the cat out of the bag! Take Alameda to Holly, then go north to Cedar, and you'll find this little deli/market.

Sure, their sandwich menu is a bit limited -- a dozen sandwiches might be exaggerating slightly. But the quality of the breads and the meats won't leave you pining for anything else.

Try the Italian on a baguette (although they put mayo on mine and it was not listed on the menu, gag!) or the grilled turkey and brie, complete with cranberries.

They offer deli-style sides, but in addition to the staple potato salad, you can also find tabbouleh and a mango salsa with black beans.

Opposite the sandwich counter there is a reasonable butcher selection for the size of the shop. If you were in a bind you could whip up an entire meal with the very few odds and ends they carry in the dry goods department, especially if you grab some of the gourmet cheeses and fresh bread they sell as well.

But, if you're sticking with the sandwich, pay at the register and head outside to an austere but welcoming picnic area.

Exempla Saint Joseph's Hospital

Category: Hospitals
Neighborhood: Northeast

As a typical, seemingly immortal 20-something, I never imagined I would ever be writing a review for a hospital. But then the big 3-0 hit, and next thing I know, I gotta spend three days in the hospital. Luckily for me, my insurance sent me to Saint Joseph's.

St. Joe's is a teaching hospital (just like on House, M.D.) and I had a whole team of doctors working on my diagnosis (just like on House, M.D.). They threw around terms like vasculitis and lupus (just like on House, M.D.) until arriving at a heretofore nearly-unheard-of rare disease.

I also had fantastic nurses, enjoyed overhearing exciting goings-on in the neighboring rooms, and even confess that the food was much better than expected. There were patient advocates who visited, and a volunteer offered me moisturizer and make-up! (They never show this stuff on House, M.D.)

As you might have guessed, I don't have any experience with hospitals other than watching House, M.D., so I can't compare this hospital with any other.  But from what I experienced during my three days, I can recommend Saint Joseph's.

I further suggest that you say "yes" to letting the student doctors have a crack at you, since that way you get tons of attention and feel like your stay is more worthwhile.

Just keep it in mind, because -- and I hate to break it to you Yelpers out there -- you're gonna turn 30 one day, too.

(Only kept the fifth star back because they didn't completely explain my meds to me. I don't think they understood themselves, since I was such an unusual case?)
