I decided to make a dentist appointment about a week ago once I realized the the year was almost over and I hadn't used any of my dental benefits yet (eek I KNOW gross). The last dentist I went to was in Yorba Linda so I really needed to find a good dentist local to me. Mike recommended that I call up his dentist because she can usually get you in within a day or two AND she uses this awesome water thing to clean your teeth instead of the usual paaaaainful metal scraper. I'm a procrastinator so I forgot to call about an appointment until the day before I was leaving on a 7-day cruise - no appointments available of course but the receptionist was able to give me the latest available (4pm) on the Saturday that I was getting back to town. Score.
The woman I spoke with on the phone was so sweet and super helpful. She made sure to let me know about the parking under the building and I also got a call from her just before my appointment to let me know that if the elevator was locked and I couldn't get in the building that I could just call them and someone would come down to get me.
I gotta say I HATE going to the dentist. Hate hate hate it. It's either a combination of painful childhood memories, or the fact that I didn't know I could ask for more Novocaine, or the fear of being scolded for not having better oral hygiene or something like that. Gotta say that Dr. Cheung totally killed my fears. Maybe it's because I've never been to a female dentist before her? She is awesome though - sweet, friendly, gentle, non-judgmental, and I gotta say it, she is a total hottie.
You know how when you have your first visit with a doctor and they make you fill out a fat stack of forms about your medical history? Dr. Cheung has a little computer station over on the side of the reception desk where you get to just click on electronic versions of the Med Hx forms instead of doing it the old-school paper and pencil way. It even comes complete with an electronic signature pad to take care of all the consent and HIPAA forms. When you're done filling out the forms you have the option of watching a couple of video presentations about the services you're receiving that day and then you'll find a little bottle of hand sanitizer to clean up with once you're all finished with the computer.
Once in the chair I got to watch DVDs of The Office. Yes! She has a bunch of TV shows or movies you can watch or you can choose to just listen to music while she works on your teeth. That sonic water thing she uses to clean your teeth really is amazing. I had none of the pain and discomfort that I'm used to when the dentist usually starts scraping and poking around in there. It was much quicker too. Dr. Cheung made sure to show me the instrument before she started working and assured me that even though it would sound like a drill it's just water.
The whole process was such a breeze for me. No pain, no discomfort, no anxiety. I am so glad I found Dr. Cheung!
When I was all done and headed out the door I was given a sheet with a rundown of my treatment plan complete with a breakdown of her fees, how much my insurance will cover, and my anticipated co-pay and she made sure to work it out so that the cost to me could be minimized.
It's weird to be saying this but I can't wait for my next appointment with her!

The only thing that brought it down to 4.5-stars is the 50-minute wait to see the doctor after my set appointment time. I've never even waited that long for my own doctors! Nobody really even gave me an estimated wait time which I would have really appreciated as I was using my lunch hour for this. I did not experience a significant wait at my previous visit which was first thing in the morning so if you're pressed for time I'd recommend making your appointments for early in the day before they have a chance to get too backed up. If you're just in need of a vaccination or two for your furry friend you don't even need an appointment (though you should call ahead of time just to be safe) as I saw several pets quickly receive vaccinations as walk-ins during my wait (these are administered by techs so it does not interfere with the doctors keeping on schedule).
An improvement at this visit from my last visit was the extremely warm and friendly care my pet received. Not to say the doctor or techs were cold before but this time I really felt good vibes from the people helping us and was at ease putting my pup in their capable hands. A tech, RJ, administered Alex's vaccinations so gently that the 2 needles only elicited 1 mini baby growl and Alex didn't even fidget or try to get away. Being a rescue pup with some snippy ticks to his personality I expected my baby boy to act up and start biting fingers left and right but aside from being a bit antsy he was not nervous at all and in the hands of strangers behaved like the sweet little boy I know him to be.
