Prince Creperie - CLOSED

This place is a solid 3 stars, with clear potential to get a 4th as they settle in and get the service right (friendly but a little disjointed). The food was great, plenty of flavors and they're not shy about spice. The Salade Nicoise was a stand out with good portions of tuna, anchovy, potato and mustard. Really delicious. Everyone was happy with their meals, which were crepes with smoked salmon, eggs, etc. Some great savory mixes. We also ended with a mildly sweet crepe for dessert with lemon juice, sugar and pine nuts. Atmosphere was cozy. Looking forward to this place settling in on a street already bustling with plenty of food choices. BYO.

I've been happy every time I've eaten here. Wether delivery, take-out or eat-in, the food is always delightful.

I love the sweetness of the macaroni dish, the crisp flavors of their pad thai (with almonds), and the heat of the cracked chicken salad. Their veggies are always cooked perfectly and prepared in interesting ways. Nothing gets boring here.

Their appetizers are great too. The crispy "wing wing" and salty quail eggs are fun.

They also carry a large stock of asian snack foods, which has been fun to explore. I've tried many, but my favorite has to be the dried squid. So hot! I also stop in for the mochi and thai iced coffee often.

The restaurant itself is a lot of fun. They update the murals from time to time with un cartoon characters. There's really nothing else like it.

One of the best breakfast/brunch places in Chicago.

A bit off the beaten path across from North Park University, this place is always busy, but hardly ever a long wait.

The Swedish breakfast menu is prepared perfectly. Everything is light, but rich in flavor. Even the potatoes somehow taste more...potato-y.

I've done omelets, pastries, the hash and more. The rye bread toast is unique. And the coffee is mellow and smooth, reminiscent of Julius Meinl.

The crowd here is great too. From older Chicago couples to a young, foreign university crowd. And the service is lively.

Love coming here.

Rendezvous Bistro - CLOSED

One of the oddest service experiences of my life, but the food was delicious.

Every time we asked a question, the server, a very young man, would disappear into the back and we could hear people arguing in French for ten minutes. He would return with a answer that made no sense. Each question resulting in this routine, lasting about 30 minutes or more before we could order. We went for the pre-fixe they advertise, but there seemed to be some misunderstanding. Finally, he revealed that he doesn't work there and he was taking the place of a waiter that cancelled that day. Either way, he tried to pieces together a pre-fixe offer, but it was a linguistic mess. Poor guy, he tried really hard.

In the end, we both enjoyed our steak frites. Buttery, tender, cooked perfectly. I'd return again for the food, but it looks as though it's being replaced by a falafel joint. Hard to tell.

Really fantastic food. I've done takeout and eaten in multiple times, and everything is always top-notch.

The lentil soup and ful are staples. I've also done the chicken (comes wrapped in a pita), falafel, and the vegetarian plate. The leftovers keep me happy for days.

While they're not shy with middle-eastern spices, they don't over do it. Never too salty.

Just did a takeout order for 6 the other night, and it was ready in 20 minutes. Everyone raved about the flavors.

Highly recommended.

Arvgarden Bed & Breakfast

By far the best B+B near the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon in Wellsboro, PA.

Where their competitors seem obsessed with over-the-top, wannabe Victorian stylings (enough ornate flower quilts to suffocate you visually), Arvgarden has created a relaxing, minimalist aesthetic suitable for a Swedish sheep farm.

The food was fantastic, made with imported Swedish treats, and the hosts were delightful. We felt right at home. They also gave us great recommendations for dining in town.

Part of a working sheep farm, our hosts gave us the run of the place where we could walk the grounds, filled with sheep and barn cats, tucked in the mountains about 15 minutes from the canyon.

The hosts are also skilled crafstman, showing us how they use the loom to weave their own home-grown wool into rugs, blankets and clothing.

It was a sublime setting in one of Pennsylvania's best areas, especially during the fall foliage.

Highly recommended.

One of the best steaks I've had in recent memory.

It's a cozy little converted stone house right in the middle of Redmond. Great service (although hesitant to recommend one dish over another), and good wine. Local ingredients and lots of veggies.

Interior was a little echo-y but pleasant. The outside seating looked really unique. Hope I get to try dinner out back next time.

After taking over Ventrella's, a place I begrudgingly loved, Dolce Casa has made some great changes while keeping the aesthetic and ambiance of the place in tact. This still authentic-Italian cafe now has better wi-fi, much better (and consistent) hours and outdoor seating. Overall, it seems more interested in actually having customers than Ventrella's ever did, and it shows. This place went from being a "if-it's-actually-open-I-might-stop-in" cafe to a magnet in the neighborhood. Oh, and I heard the new owner fixed the gelato case that's stood empty for two years. Here's to an enthused new owner!

This place has been bought and re-opened as Dolce Casa with some great improvements. The core of the cafe is smartly the same, but better hours, wi-fi and outdoor seating.

No place like it. Mid-century aesthetic and working wood fireplace make this more than a coffee stop. And the owner runs the whole show. Lavazza coffee, pastries, paninis (I watched him pull the basil off the plant), and celebrated specialties (banana-nutella sandwich kills). Free-wifi seals the deal.

Some might say it's a little slow, but it's just trying to grow at a reasonable pace for the neighborhood. It's the kind of place you want to have around for good.

The next time you're considering waiting in line for Over Easy (also good, right next door) consider this a worthy audible.
