Went here last night with a group while out in Chicago for a conference. The place was busy (unlike many other restaurants we passed in the area) but the five of us got a table right away. The service was great without being at all overbearing, and the presentation and quality of our meals were well above what we expected for the price. (Not that it's cheap, but rather the presentation was excellent.) The atmosphere was perfect, the frozen margaritas flowed, and the made-to-order guacamole was consumed in a heartbeat. Definitely would come back the next time I'm in the area.

Beauge's Tailoring Alterations For Men & Women

I was tailor-less for a few months after moving into Boston proper... and then I found Camille Beauge. His work is impeccable, and he's about the nicest guy you'll ever meet. A phenomenal tailor, and great with repairs -- he made a very difficult repair to a favorite pair of dress pants that really impressed me. A tucked away location, but once you find it you'll keep going back.

A welcome addition to the neighborhood for those of us seeking new lunch spots in the Financial District. Just opened yesterday, offering higher-quality fare than most other options in the area. I grabbed one of their menus and am getting hungry again just looking at it.  Plus, great service -- because eventually you grow tired of getting yelled at by the staff at Al's across the street.

Olde Boston Café - CLOSED

The Olde Boston Cafe opened quietly last week on Water St in the Financial District, the latest addition to the dozens of lunch spots downtown. It certainly feels brand new; the place is immaculate, with a simple, step-up-from-a-cafeteria feel.

I had the flagship State House hot sandwich -- essentially a steak and cheese with house made ginger teriyaki sauce. Tasty and well cooked (not overdone), but almost too subtle in flavor. The bread was simple, but baked fresh in house. My colleague said her salad (with chicken grilled to order) was quite good as well.

Once the word gets out, I'm sure this place will have a line out the door at lunch hour like every other spot in the Financial District, but for the next week or so you've got a good shot at having the place to yourself. They also do breakfast, both sit-down (omlettes) and take out (breakfast wraps).

Anchovies

Dark, cozy, unpretentious, and familiar, even on your first visit -- Anchovies is a winner.

Start with the Italian nachos. It doesn't sound very profound to say that these are exactly what nachos would be if they were Italian... but they are, and somehow they're perfect. This can be a lot to split between two people, but could be good for three or four.

After that, you've got options. I had the fettucine alfredo with chicken and broccoli -- nothing crazy, just a solid, straight up the middle Italian dish. Whatever you order, you're probably only going to be able to finish half -- the portions are huge.

If you're looking for fine dining and/or an extensive beer and wine selection, you've come to the wrong place. But as many others have said before me, it's a the perfect casual spot to catch up with some friends over dinner or a beer.

Whiskey Park - CLOSED

I have a hard time justifying paying a cover for ANY place in Boston, and Whiskey Park did not prove to be an exception. Once you're in, $15 poorer than before, it's loud, dark, and overpriced. The first two make sense: it's loud because people here don't have anything to say, and it's dark because you wouldn't really want to talk to them if the lights were on. As for the drink prices... I have to imagine that the proprietors are leveraging what could only be described as a "cleavage tax" based on the outfits of their staff. Truly a classy establishment.

So if you like to shout at the top of your voice to order a $16 drink from a bartender who's had to check her dignity at the door, hop on down to Whiskey Park.

It's not as comfortable as the Acela, but when you can't expense the trip there's no better way to get to the Big Apple from Boston. Wifi on board (hint for the complainers: it's faster near the front of the bus), more legroom than Greyhound/Fung Wah, and here's a perk: you're not going to die in a giant fireball on your way from Chinatown to Chinatown. (Yes, the Bolt Bus departs and arrives at real stations -- South and Penn.)

Sleep No More - American Repertory Theater

"Sleep No More" is possibly the coolest thing going in Boston right now -- unlike any theatrical production you've ever been to. I went on opening night, and had absolutely no idea what to expect. I won't deny you the same experience by giving anything away, but just know that you should absolutely go to this show while it's still running.

I have to avoid this store, because as soon as I walk in, I'm dead. Most of the stuff in here I would never wear, but there's always SOMETHING that I immediately fall in love with and costs about three times what I want to pay for it... but of course I get it... and then kick myself all the way to the tailor.

Well, that's somewhat of an exaggeration. I've been impressed with their suits lately... I've now got a khaki suit and a tweed sport coat that are both worth every penny. My only regret is that I'm not hardcore enough to be one of the elite J. Crew sale-shoppers that everyone else seems to be, and end up paying full price for everything.

Roger Smith Hotel

Neighborhood: Midtown East

I was in the city for a work-related event that was actually being held at the Roger Smith, so it couldn't have been any more convenient. The event was a huge success, and I had the rest of the weekend to enjoy the accommodations. For a midtown hotel, the price was extremely reasonable, and the staff was very personable. Apparently I said the magic words, because I got a free upgrade to a large corner room. The rustic style of the rooms (exemplified by my vintage four-post bed) was a nice contrast to what you'd expect in a NYC hotel, and from what I understand, each individual room is different.

Prices seem to have gone up since I was there, but if you're looking for a reasonable stay in midtown, it's worth checking out.
