Sacco's Bowl Haven

Category: Bowling
Neighborhood: Davis Square

4 star rating
 7/10/2009
If you're looking for old-school Somerville, Sacco's Bowl Haven is probably a good place to start. One room has a number of ancient bowling lanes, some of which don't seem to work very well (which is part of the charm, I guess). Another room has pool tables where both college kids and older locals can be seen racking 'em up.

This is not a pretty place; indeed, it is dank, musty, and completely lacking in any trendiness (which ironically makes it a trendy spot to some). But it is a fun spot to go to while in Davis Square, and certainly a cheap night out.

The Warren Store

What more could you ask for--a country store in the heart of Vermont's Green Mountains, complete with all kinds of gifts and souvenirs, a cafe on the first floor, and an outdoor deck overlooking a river. The tiny village of Warren doesn't have a whole lot going on, but it's really scenic and the Warren Store definitely makes it worth a visit.

Harvest Market

If I lived near this place (and was a little more wealthy), I would probably shop here a couple of times a week. The Harvest Market has a variety of high-quality food products, including chocolate, beer, pasta, sauces, and much more. And the people who work here seem to take pride in the place and it is clean and brightly lit. Yes, the prices are pretty expensive, but in this case, you definitely get what you pay for.

I can't vouch for the food here, but their beer list is second to none. Included are Switchback (a cult favorite) as well as all kinds of other Vermont beers in addition to imports. The scotch list is quite impressive, too, and there are lots of excellent wines from which to choose. Combine this with an outdoor seating area overlooking Route 108 and the hills in the distance, and you have a perfect place to chill out over good drinks.

Cabot Annex Store

Wow, what a store this is! Not only do they have some of the tastiest cheddar cheese I've ever had (and a wide variety at that), but they also have a small but very interesting beer selection, including some of Vermont's best beers. You can sample many of the cheeses before you buy them, which is great because you really don't know whether you're going to like a particular cheese until you try it (a couple of the cheeses weren't very interesting to me, though most were). This place is definitely a must-visit while in the Stowe/Waterbury area.

Super Discount Liquors

This place looks like your typical liquor store in a shopping center, but the beer selection is excellent, bordering on outstanding. All kinds of artisan/craft beers are available here, including a number from New England (if only they had Switchback available!). The folks working there are generally pretty friendly, and the prices are about average for most items. I go here every now and then when I'm in the neighborhood and am looking for unusual beers, and they rarely disappoint.

AMC Braintree 10

A pretty basic theater - nothing great, nothing awful about the place. One thing I do like, however, is that it doesn't seem to get packed like other theater chains do, and it isn't quite as full of rowdy types as some of the others.

It won't make me forget about the great independents around Boston, but AMC Braintree isn't a bad place to go if you want to catch a first-run show.

Pinehills the

A fairly new development (a village, really) set amidst mostly unspoiled, rural land between Plymouth Center and the Cape Cod Canal, the Pinehills centers mostly around a golf course, with homes on and near the course and a small number of businesses situated in a rather charming village square. It is an interesting place in a way, but it also feels a bit barren and cold to me. Some sections for instance, have big houses and McMansions with all the trees torn down around them, while the village square, while quaint in a way, also feels a bit too planned. Probably not a bad place to live if you like golf and/or are retired, though.

Savin Hill Park

As is the case with many Boston parks, Savin Hill Park is tiny, but it has a lot to offer, from a bucolic, tree-shaded area at the base of the park (and some really nice homes across from the entrance) to outstanding views of Boston Harbor and the Blue Hills from the high point of the park. Depending on the time of year, wildflowers can also be viewed in the park, and there are plenty of grassy areas for a picnic. It is a real oasis in one of Boston's most densely populated neighborhoods (Dorchester), and one that is a bit of a hidden gem.

Not a bad place overall. They have all kinds of plants, including a wide variety of pepper plants this time of year. The people are friendly and the prices seem pretty good. And in the fall, it is a great place to go after apple picking and grab a pumpkin and perhaps some cider and baked goods. It isn't a huge place, but it has plenty to offer as farmstands go.
