The coffee is hot and the employees are nice.

But I just paid $5+ for a bagel and coffee, and the bagel was squishy, damp, and smelled like a wet towel that had sat on the floor overnight. I threw the entire thing out, because it made me paranoid that the milk I put in my coffee was left to sit out as well.

Walk a few more steps to the Au Bon Pain. Not great either, but at least maybe they have better QC because they're a chain? (That could be faulty logic, but at the very least don't waste your money here.)

Apollo Express Laundromat

Great: This place is open 24 hours, brightly lit, the machines are fairly new, and the blonde woman working the counter sometimes is super nice and recognizes you after you've been in only a few times. The card system is super convenient and you won't have to hoard quarters anymore.

Good: I've done both drop-off and dry cleaning with them, and they have never lost or damaged any of my stuff. The turnaround time is quick, too.

Meh: There is an older man who works later at night who is v. grouchy. Sometimes it's amusing, but his scolding gets old pretty quickly. Also, everything is cash-only, which may be typical of NY laundromats but not great if you drop of 40 lbs of laundry. Everything is all around a little pricey too.

Overall: If you do your own laundry (I only include this caveat bc so many previous commenters had issues with damaged items when dropping off/dry cleaning), this place is better than the other options in northern Greenpoint.

There are quite a few locally-owned pet stores along Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint, and this one is my favorite. It's run by three guys (presumably a man and his two sons), and they were always so friendly and helpful whenever I went in. More pros:

- As another commenter said, they're open until 9PM
- They have 2 adorable cats there, Kobe and Cece (Kobe, the orange one, is very inquisitive and affectionate)
- They post photos of their customers' pets all over the wall by the door, and have encouraged me to bring one in of my own
- They almost always had what I needed in stock, and if they didn't, they'd offer to order it for me

This is just a really great place. If you live above India, it's your best option! I'm sorry to have moved and not be able to go here anymore.

The Tailoring Room

I needed a bomber jacket relined, and found out about this place from Stanton Tailor Shop (they had a 5-week waiting list and it was getting chillier by the day). The Tailoring Room gave me a choice of fabrics, a 2-week time frame, and a quote. It was honestly double what I expected to spend,* but I just picked up the jacket and cannot sing its praises more loudly -- The job they did is impeccable. The pleats are meticulously placed, the tags are all sewed back on, and the lining in the pockets was replaced as well. Really great craftsmanship here.

Both employees I spoke with there were very friendly and helpful, and trusting (they didn't even blink when I left the store - finished jacket and all - to get more cash from the ATM to pay the bill). I'll definitely be back.

* TBH I really had no idea what "a normal price to spend on relining a jacket" was, so this might be my own fault for not doing research beforehand!

This place is awesome. It's on a quiet little street, it's cute, there are cookies laid out, and I was offered a beer when I walked in for my appointment. I followed Eileen over to Adelaide from The Beehive, because she's a magician with curly hair. Even though my appointments are usually on the late side of the day and the place is always long-closed by the time I'm done, Eileen has never rushed through anything during a cut. A+ :)

I don't know what to do about this place. I first went in because of the balloon and pennant explosion when they opened...

Breakfasts: Solidly good hot and iced coffee (they have hazelnut too, yum), solidly good breakfast sandwiches /bagels + cream cheese. Pretty fast service, nice staff in general.

Lunch: Just went in for lunch for the first time, and it was a complete disaster. I was sent to 3 different places to order, and then shuffled around to pay as well. And the turkey sandwich... tasted like punishment.

Five Leaves

I walk by this place every day, and finally got to go with my roommate last night (it's always been too packed before).

There is not a lot of space in there, so we had to be mindful of our every move, lest we fling a wine glass onto another table. Speaking of, I had a glass of the Rhone, which was very good. Then the Five Leaves Burger - $15 of juicy, fried pineapple sliced, fried egged deliciousness. Seriously, YUM. Later, I had a bite of my roommate's shortbread with Earl Grey Tea ice cream (!?), which was out of this world. I'm actually still thinking of calling them to ask where they got that ice cream.

I had to run back in right after I left, because I carelessly left my keys on my seat; the first thing I saw was a cute server standing over the table, holding the keys up for me with a big grin on his face.

Overall, lovely. The prices are a little steep, but I guess that's what we get for going to Heath Bar.

These lunch prices are super. I just ordered delivery from this place yesterday (to my office in SoHo). It came in a timely manner and was quite good. The lunch plate is a little over $6 for two pieces of gyoza, a salad, rice and entree (I chose the spicy salmon roll, delicious). For four more dollars in SoHo, I could get a salad. One salad.

Kanoyama

It has been over twelve hours since my first dinner at Kanoyama, and I'm still thinking about it. I met a friend at 7.45pm, and the wait was half an hour. We put our name down and gave our phone number just in case, but eventually started searching for another sushi place in the neighborhood.

When we were five minutes away, my phone rang. We ran like crazy people all the way back, lest they give the table to someone else.

It was worth it. The oshinko was beautifully prepared and refreshing. The salmon sushi melted in my mouth, allowing me to take two bites of each piece instead of eating the whole thing at once so I wouldn't risk the "can't bite through the fish /I'm making a mess /rice is getting everywhere" dance. The lobster salad and spicy scallop rolls were out of this world, as were the eel (we got both sea eel and eel + cucumber).

Our server was very sweet and courteous, and even though the place is small and there were people waiting, we were never rushed.

My friend and I each paid slightly over $30, which was a steal for the experience we had. I'm going to tell everyone I know about this place, and am definitely going back to treat myself soon.

Rheon Cafe - CLOSED

Just had lunch at this place; pretty good. I got a whole smoked turkey sandwich. They introduced some pretty interesting flavors into it (tomato sauce and mushroom duxelle sauce?) which made it stand out from the other turkey sandwiches I've had in SoHo. Had a bite of my friend's duck sandwich and it seemed perfect for summer. We sat in the cute backyard that overlooks a playground. Screaming children aside, it was a nice atmosphere out there.

The interior doesn't have much character, and I was disappointed when trying to find the robots that have been said to operate in the kitchen (I think they're just fancy ovens with different buttons and lights on them).

Otherwise though, Rheon is a nice outdoor option for summer. The whole sandwich was plenty for a midday meal, albeit a little pricey (I can get a huge salad with four slices of bread at Aroma for the same price).
