Plaza Jalisco

Category: Mexican

4 star rating
 1/9/2009
I have been here on a few occasions and finally decided to review it
There are a few reasons I really like this place. Let's stars with the staff and service.  They are always super friendly, quick to greet customers and bring your food to your table. Not bad for a semi fast food restaurant. Also, Plaza Jalisco is family owned. Mom, sons and cousins run everything from the front to the kitchen. The mom and her oldest son are consistently good about walking around and making sure everything is OK.
Next is the important part, food! My litmus test for any Mexican place is the carnitas. Good pork carnitas are crunchy on the outside, moist, spicy and yummy on the inside. Let me say unequivocally that these are some of the best carnitas in Sacramento!!! I've had carnitas everywhere from Zocalo to Tres Hermanas to the La Fiesta/Favorita chains. None of them hold a candle to Plaza Jalisco. The beans and rice are fresh and not from a can. The salsa bar is well stocked, tasty and (unlike many) clean. I've also had the sopes and tacos here. Both were very good.
Overall, this is a great place to grab lunch or a quick dinner if you are in the area. Definitely worth the drive every so often. This is the kind of restaurant that I would love to see survive and REALLY wish was closer to my 'hood. You know I am usually pretty stingy with my ratings and would like to givea rating of three and a half stars. Usually that would be a three on Yelp but Plaza Jalisco deserves a four and some more notice. Four stars for being small, family run, having great food and definitely deserving some notice.

It's hard to say more good things about Luigi's in Oak Park. I like this place much more than the midtown slice location. Of course, I usually go to the midtown location after a long night out so the crowd may bias my opinion. The decor here is homey, the owners are hilarious and the pizza is excellent. Definitely worth the trip

We were in Berkley after driving down the coast from Bodega Bay and desperately wanted beef. My friend and I stumbled into this places and ordered some burgers. Both of ours were good and the fries were crispy and yummy. Good? Yes. Sublime? No. Value? Yes. I'd god back if I was on that side of campus again. 2 stars with leanings towards 2.5 if it were an option.

Trails Restaurant

2 star rating

Some friends and I went to trails Restaurant for my birthday not because we were expecting a sublime meal but simply because we got one of their menus on our doorsteps and were surprised that, among other things, their light meals section included ribs. : ) After talking about going for the better part of a year, we finally stopped by. The food was very standard of forgettable American comfort food. I had the famous ribs  and my friends were more low key in their choices, opting for the conservative burger and strip steak. All the meals came with asmall salad and a roll with a pat (yes, a pat) of butter.
Theere were a couple of highlights for the evening. One was how well they handled the 1 1/2 year-old we had with us. She was being a typical, boisterous girl but they handled it well and even had some fun with her.  Second was their desserts. Since it was my birthday, we decided to go all out and throw down for some cobbler. The little bits of yumminess came in their own individual ramekins and were actually very, very good. So, two stars for decent food and good service. I might go back but it would be low on my list of places to return to.

Miso Japanese Cuisine

Category: Japanese

3 star rating

I have gone to Miso a couple of time as it is my neighborhood Japanese restaurant and had two different experience both times. The first time was for a friend's birthday and we happened to be there on a night when they apparently had a "big" group coming in. This group ended up being about 12 people celebrating someone else's birthday and it resulted in the whole restaurant coming to a halt and our service was indeed poor. I asked politely for things like napkins, chopsticks and water and each time we were apparently on the bottom of the priority list. All this is despite the fact that our server was not even in charge of the large table, simply assisting where the other two people minding the table needed help. Luckily the food was good. We both got Bento boxes, hers included tempura that was lightly battered and not too greasy. Mine included a teriyaki beef  portion that was really good.
The second time around, service was much better. This time, my guest and I's eyes were definitely much bigger than our stomachs. I was really in the mood for some fish so I got some nigiri and a roll. Both were prepared as expected by there descriptions with ample ingredients and no strange additions like too much sauce or unnecessary garnish. She got a stir fried Chicken Tappenyaki that was huge! Plus, we got a surprise roll for spending more than $30 and shared that. Most of her dish ended up going home with her.
All in all, this is a good Japanese place for me. They redeemed themselves on their service and the food has been consistently good.  3stars.

Wonderful Chinese Restaurant

We went because the place is about  mile from my friend's place and we decided long ago that we definitely had to try a place that would put wonderful in its name. Really, we were simply expecting bad Chinese food that was cheap and chalk it up to adventure.

We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food! As expected, the prices were pretty cheap but the portions were a reasonable size and the food was not too greasy or gooey. We both enjoyed the hot tea which was cheap Chinese place standard black tea, and our dinner included hot & sour soup that was just the right combination of both. She ordered the sweet and sour pork. It came out with big pieces of pork and crunchy carrot, bell pepper and onion pieces. It had just enough sauce and was appropriately sweet. My cashew chicken had plenty of  pieces of good chicken, lots of vegetables and lots of cashews. It's funny that I just read about the crappy service. One of the highlights of our night was the service. It was attentive and one of the employees (who had obviously worked there awhile) was walking around and helping any table that needed it by filling water, taking orders and giving each table their own share of heckling. She was hilarious!

So, I am going to give this place three stars for good food, fun and attentive service and really good value. Definitely stop by if you're in the 'hood.

The Bicycle Business

Category: Bikes

4 star rating

As a bike rider, I have always made it a point to patronize my local bike shop as often as possible. Living where I do, I have the good fortune of four or five shops to choose from. TBB has risen to the top of the fray. Their selection of accessories is higher end but unique. Some of my favorites include the colored, custom wheel options, snakeskin bar tape and good selection of Fizik saddles. Apparently this is also a great place for single speed and fixed gear bikes. I have seen some of the clerk and mechanic's rigs and they are pretty nice. Overall, I have never had a bad experience here and would highly recommend it as the best shop in my hood. 4 stars but only since 3.5 is not an option.

Marie's DO-Nut Shop

Category: Donuts

4 star rating

Talk about a place that knows their customer base! Marie's is only open from 1AM to 4PM. They make a tasty donut, are pretty cheap and are an excellent place to stop when you feel the hankerin' for some delicious fried dough action. These times include the morning (or immediately) after a night out in Midtown, on the way to the Farmer's Market or on the way out of town. Either way, the service is prompt and it is great to have a local donut shop just around the corner. 4 stars for value, local charm and food.

Eddy's Deluxe

Categories: Hair Salons, Barbers

4 star rating
 11/18/2008
I came into Eddy's after seeing their ad in SN&R and being desperate to find a place to get my hair cut consistently well for less than $40. See, I'm not the kind of guy who needs his scalp massaged, wine while he waits or hairstylists with attitude. I had found each at a couple of places I tried and was not only unhappy with the atmosphere at each but also with the haircuts they gave me. I have coarse, thick hair that does not lend itself to much experimentation. At each place I tried previously, the stylists seemed to think they knew more than I did about my own hair and when I tried their "solutions" none of them were much more effective then what I was previously doing. Thus, Eddy's. Rea and Jen are both low key, communicative and run a really tight ship. I was immediately greeted on my first visit even though they were rocking a packed house. I put my name on the chalk board and was given a realistic wait time. Jen talked to me a bit before we got started, asked me what I had done before and was VERY conservative on our first cut. As I have gone in more consistently Jen has gotten more familiar with my hair and preferences and now I will never go anywhere else. I highly recommend Eddy's for their lack of pretense, great prices, awesome people and great atmosphere. 4 stars.  Easy.

Capitol Dawg

Category: Hot Dogs

3 star rating
 11/18/2008  ROTD 1/4/2009
I went to Capitol Dawg a couple of weeks ago with a friend for lunch. I will agree with other posters about the substantial number of choices on the menu. It is definitely worth your while to go with a couple of extra minutes on hand to read the menu. Eventually, I decided on the Old Sac Dog meal which included the hot dog, fries and a drink. When our food arrived, my friend and I were underwhelmed with the size of our dogs. We were immediately both struck with the idea to buy another dog, thus turning our $7 per dollar lunch into a $10 per affair. This puts Capitol Dawg into a whole different category for me, going from cheap eats to every so often. Keeping with the food, we both got our dogs grilled and they still tasted boiled. They really did not seem to have any of that smoky, greasy warmth that a grill (even a flat one) will impart. On the service side they were great. Our cashier/server was quick to smile, offer any help deciphering the menu and made sure we didn't need anything when she brought our order. That's pretty good service for an establishment that does not really bill itself as a sit down place. So, 2.5 stars for the food with a bump up for good service.
