Pangaea Two Brews Cafe

Categories: Breakfast & Brunch, Sandwiches, Pubs

I have learned to love Pangaea cafe. Rob is one of the best owners that I know of in Sacramento (in the same sphere as Robert Masullo and Patrick Mulvaney.) I would say that I am a fairly regular customer at Pangaea. Not everyday for sure but more than five times a month. Point being, even though I am not there everyday Rob still remembers me, acknowledges me and is consistently very nice.

I am usually there for coffee (not a connoisseur so I  can't speak about it's nuances), breakfast sandwiches and lunch. The sandwiches are a bit on the pricey side but always super fresh and well made. One of my favorites is the brie and turkey panini.

I recently went in and saw their remodel and new selection of Belgian beers. I am exciting that Rob is not complacent and expending his business to include new and exciting things.

Ultimately, this is definitely worth your trip and food dollar. Great, congenial service, solid food and an excellent beer selection.

Dear Crepeville,

I think the time has come for us to part ways.

I want to like you so much. You are an easy walk from my place, you have free wi-fi, you serve potatoes with every meal and you have a patio. That was enough to make me come back to you time after time. But still, as much as I try to love you, you continue to rebuff me.

What about that time when I was really hungry but did not want use your exorbitantly priced ATM nor go to my bank. Is it too much to ask that you at least take debit cards, even with a fee?

How about that times when your food has been cold and service apathetic? You would think that the consistency with which I came back to you would merit some recognition or at least a smile. Nope, not for this guy.

How about that time when the Wi-Fi wasn't working and I mentioned it to your staff member, only to be told that the office was closed and she could do nothing about it. That would have been OK if I hadn't seen the owner walking down the stairs from the office 30 minutes later. The lies hurt most, Crepeville. Oh the lies!

Ultimately Crepeville, you have disappointed me one too many times. There are too many other quality restaurants in Land/Curtis Park that I can walk to. I think I will do so from now on.

Best,
-Tony T.

Terramoto Transportation

Let's start off by saying I am not a five star review kind of guy. Nothing annoys me more than when people review EVERYTHING with FIVE STARSSSS!!!!!!!!!!! That being said, I am going to give Terramoto five stars because they are super accommodating, competitively priced, exceptionally nice and a green company. For a business that could essentially do nothing but contribute to climate change, that's the tipping point for me. They are a small business that is truly committed to doing a good thing.
My GF and I recently went to SD for a dose of mid-winter sun and to escape the fog of NorCal. We decided we didn't want to rent a car because the the extra costs of having a car, insurance, parking and gas were more than we wanted to deal with. Thus, we looked for cab companies to get to/from our hotel. I found Terramoto on Yelp and on Google and was immediately interested.
My first impression of the company was with Jamie, their dispatcher/office manager/phone answerer extraordinaire. I would have been more than happy if she had simply taken my CC information and been nice. However, that first conversation, and every subsequent conversation with Jamie was excellent. She is bubbly, conversational, empathetic and truly interested in making sure that you are happy. It was consistently a pleasure to deal with Jamie even when I had a billing issue that she fixed immediately and without question.
Our driver from the airport was Dustin. I later found out he is a co-founder. Our flight got in a 1/2 hour early and apparently
so did many of their other customer's flights. Although Dustin was doing a good amount of dispatching and crisis management while he drove us, he was still pleasant and gave us some tips on things to do in the area of SD where we were staying.
Finally, our drive back to the airport was with Chris. This was exceptional because it was raining HARD that day and I called Terramoto to change our pickup time and location at the last minute. Without hesitation Jamie made the change and called Chris in EARLY (away from wife and kid no less) and he picked us up with a smile.
Overall, it is hard for me to say enough good things about Terramoto. If you have ANY business in the SD area, call them. The Priuses they drive are new and comfortable, their staff consistently goes above and beyond and they apparently now offer wi-fi in their cars.
Thanks Terramoto for being awesome!!

Plaza Jalisco

Category: Mexican

4.0 star rating

I have been here on a few occasions and finally decided to review it
There are a few reasons I really like this place. Let's stars with the staff and service.  They are always super friendly, quick to greet customers and bring your food to your table. Not bad for a semi fast food restaurant. Also, Plaza Jalisco is family owned. Mom, sons and cousins run everything from the front to the kitchen. The mom and her oldest son are consistently good about walking around and making sure everything is OK.
Next is the important part, food! My litmus test for any Mexican place is the carnitas. Good pork carnitas are crunchy on the outside, moist, spicy and yummy on the inside. Let me say unequivocally that these are some of the best carnitas in Sacramento!!! I've had carnitas everywhere from Zocalo to Tres Hermanas to the La Fiesta/Favorita chains. None of them hold a candle to Plaza Jalisco. The beans and rice are fresh and not from a can. The salsa bar is well stocked, tasty and (unlike many) clean. I've also had the sopes and tacos here. Both were very good.
Overall, this is a great place to grab lunch or a quick dinner if you are in the area. Definitely worth the drive every so often. This is the kind of restaurant that I would love to see survive and REALLY wish was closer to my 'hood. You know I am usually pretty stingy with my ratings and would like to givea rating of three and a half stars. Usually that would be a three on Yelp but Plaza Jalisco deserves a four and some more notice. Four stars for being small, family run, having great food and definitely deserving some notice.

It's hard to say more good things about Luigi's in Oak Park. I like this place much more than the midtown slice location. Of course, I usually go to the midtown location after a long night out so the crowd may bias my opinion. The decor here is homey, the owners are hilarious and the pizza is excellent. Definitely worth the trip

We were in Berkley after driving down the coast from Bodega Bay and desperately wanted beef. My friend and I stumbled into this places and ordered some burgers. Both of ours were good and the fries were crispy and yummy. Good? Yes. Sublime? No. Value? Yes. I'd god back if I was on that side of campus again. 2 stars with leanings towards 2.5 if it were an option.

Trails Restaurant

Some friends and I went to trails Restaurant for my birthday not because we were expecting a sublime meal but simply because we got one of their menus on our doorsteps and were surprised that, among other things, their light meals section included ribs. : ) After talking about going for the better part of a year, we finally stopped by. The food was very standard of forgettable American comfort food. I had the famous ribs  and my friends were more low key in their choices, opting for the conservative burger and strip steak. All the meals came with asmall salad and a roll with a pat (yes, a pat) of butter.
Theere were a couple of highlights for the evening. One was how well they handled the 1 1/2 year-old we had with us. She was being a typical, boisterous girl but they handled it well and even had some fun with her.  Second was their desserts. Since it was my birthday, we decided to go all out and throw down for some cobbler. The little bits of yumminess came in their own individual ramekins and were actually very, very good. So, two stars for decent food and good service. I might go back but it would be low on my list of places to return to.

Miso Japanese Cuisine

I have gone to Miso a couple of time as it is my neighborhood Japanese restaurant and had two different experience both times. The first time was for a friend's birthday and we happened to be there on a night when they apparently had a "big" group coming in. This group ended up being about 12 people celebrating someone else's birthday and it resulted in the whole restaurant coming to a halt and our service was indeed poor. I asked politely for things like napkins, chopsticks and water and each time we were apparently on the bottom of the priority list. All this is despite the fact that our server was not even in charge of the large table, simply assisting where the other two people minding the table needed help. Luckily the food was good. We both got Bento boxes, hers included tempura that was lightly battered and not too greasy. Mine included a teriyaki beef  portion that was really good.
The second time around, service was much better. This time, my guest and I's eyes were definitely much bigger than our stomachs. I was really in the mood for some fish so I got some nigiri and a roll. Both were prepared as expected by there descriptions with ample ingredients and no strange additions like too much sauce or unnecessary garnish. She got a stir fried Chicken Tappenyaki that was huge! Plus, we got a surprise roll for spending more than $30 and shared that. Most of her dish ended up going home with her.
All in all, this is a good Japanese place for me. They redeemed themselves on their service and the food has been consistently good.  3stars.

Wonderful Chinese Restaurant

Category: Chinese

We went because the place is about  mile from my friend's place and we decided long ago that we definitely had to try a place that would put wonderful in its name. Really, we were simply expecting bad Chinese food that was cheap and chalk it up to adventure.

We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food! As expected, the prices were pretty cheap but the portions were a reasonable size and the food was not too greasy or gooey. We both enjoyed the hot tea which was cheap Chinese place standard black tea, and our dinner included hot & sour soup that was just the right combination of both. She ordered the sweet and sour pork. It came out with big pieces of pork and crunchy carrot, bell pepper and onion pieces. It had just enough sauce and was appropriately sweet. My cashew chicken had plenty of  pieces of good chicken, lots of vegetables and lots of cashews. It's funny that I just read about the crappy service. One of the highlights of our night was the service. It was attentive and one of the employees (who had obviously worked there awhile) was walking around and helping any table that needed it by filling water, taking orders and giving each table their own share of heckling. She was hilarious!

So, I am going to give this place three stars for good food, fun and attentive service and really good value. Definitely stop by if you're in the 'hood.

The Bicycle Business

As a bike rider, I have always made it a point to patronize my local bike shop as often as possible. Living where I do, I have the good fortune of four or five shops to choose from. TBB has risen to the top of the fray. Their selection of accessories is higher end but unique. Some of my favorites include the colored, custom wheel options, snakeskin bar tape and good selection of Fizik saddles. Apparently this is also a great place for single speed and fixed gear bikes. I have seen some of the clerk and mechanic's rigs and they are pretty nice. Overall, I have never had a bad experience here and would highly recommend it as the best shop in my hood. 4 stars but only since 3.5 is not an option.
