What I REALLY go for, is the crack, I mean honey butter. Did you know you can buy bottles of it? It comes in plastic squeezy bottles like you used to see ketchup in at the ballpark before they got those metal pump things. You can keep it in your fridge and enjoy it to your happy little hearts content.
Seriously though, this place is alright. I used to go here now and then when I lived nearby, and I swung in for lunch today before an interview. The service is alright, nothing outstanding, and the food is good, but my friends and I have all had something, at some point or another, that just didn't do it for us. Overall though, its not a bad place, especially if you're doing lunch or a weekday dinner.
The margaritas are simple but not watered down, which is just the way I like them. The food is good, your standard kind of hole in the wall, order by numbers Mexican fare. Some of the staff doesn't speak English, some of them will say cheese dip? when you order queso. The chips and salsa are good, and the prices are really quite good for the area. All in all, the food is always hot, and unlike chris s., I've never had a problem with service. It may not be the best on the planet, but its no different than any other hole in the wall Mexican place I've eaten at over the years.
This is probably my favorite Mexican restaurant in the area, running about neck and neck with Anitas, but Tolteca gets the win because its more Tex-Mex over New Mexican. Always one of my stops when I'm visiting my parents.
Can't wait to possibly live down the street from this place again...

Sigh....
This is one of the top 5 places I miss about being in DC.
I'll say from the get go that the ONLY reason this place gets 4 stars instead of 5 is because the food prices are just a little high for what they serve.
That being said, the beer book (and yes, its a book. In a binder. You want it? They probably have it.) is absolutely amazing. And, even better, the bartenders KNOW THE BEERS. I mean, where else can you go, tell the bartender a few features you like, have them bring you a beer, love it, tell them OK, I'd like more of this and less of that for the next... this can (and has, believe me) go on all night.
Parking can be a bit of a pain - there's a small lot, but you can usually park on the street a little past the lot. And its only a few blocks from the Braddock Road Metro, but you have to cross Route 1.
Either way, make it happen. Its totally worth it.

Levinson Chiropractic Center of Sandy Springs
Category: Chiropractors
When I first started going, I was told that I had some hefty issues with my lower back. My insurance didn't cover chiropractic, so they set me up with an awesome payment plan to get the treatments they thought I needed. So at first, all was AWESOME. Three days a week I went in and got adjusted, 2 of those with Dr Riggi. The third day I was with Dr Levinson. Don't get me wrong, she seems knowledgeable and all, but her strength just isn't the same - and I've had much smaller female chiropractors adjust my back in the past. But I could live with that.
What I couldn't live with, however, was what happened when I asked her about my progress. I had been going for about 3 months, and when I asked her about how things were looking I got a very vague "well, it takes time...". Basically, keep spending your money on me, we'll see what happens. At least, that's how I felt. I loved everyone else in the office, but I couldn't justify continuing to put money into a practice where the primary caregiver gave me an answer like that - I just plain felt cheated.
That would be the end of the story. I found out a few months later that Dr Riggi had left the practice and started his own, and I go see him now and then, and he's wonderful. However, its not the end, because trying to get my records from there has been a huge pain in the butt. I'm trying to file a VA claim, and even after being assured that it would be taken care of, it took a trip into the office and face to face chat with Dr Levinson to make it happen. Fingers crossed she sends them like she said she would....
All in all, if you just need an adjustment now and then, this place is fine. But if you're looking for anything further, I'd go elsewhere.

Maple View Farm Country Store
Category: Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt
My boyfriend and I agreed, as did the friends that took us: Best ice cream we'd had in a LONG time, if not ever. Its a neat little shop, with a few tables inside, a refrigerated shelf with milk, cream, butter, a few cheeses, and the like on one end, and a couple of freezers with take home containers, ice cream cakes, and some AMAZING looking steaks on the other. They had a solid selection of probably 15 flavors of ice cream, and while I had my heart set on pumpkin pie from the start, the peanut butter and grape jelly almost changed my mind. Prices were far cheaper than anything you'd see at Baskin Robbins or Ben and Jerry's, and I think the ice cream was far superior.
The rocking chairs on the front porch were cute, but the bees were not. But that's the only negative I can think of for Maple View. Had I not been in town visiting friends, I probably would have ended up buying a bunch of dairy from them and killing myself consuming it before it went bad :)

Top of the Hill Restaurant & Brewery
Category: American (Traditional)
The place was PACKED, I'm assuming because there was a game. We stayed about an hour and a half, I think, and got the chance to try a couple of the beers and a couple of the appetizers. I was expecting some typical bar food, but was pleasantly surprised. The artichoke dip came with pita triangles and bread, granted not enough for the whole thing of dip. The dip was a little creamier than I would have liked, but it was tasty. We had 2 flavors of the boneless chicken... well, they weren't wings, let's just call them chicken bits. One of the flavors, I'm not sure what it was but it was honey or sweet and sour or something, was a bit tough - over cooked, perhaps. The barbecue flavor ones were AWESOME. Juicy, and well flavored.
My favorite, which shouldn't be a surprise to anyone based on my previous reviews, was the mix of fried dill chips and fried jalapeno slices. The jalapenos were a little spicy, but they were well offset by the pickles. Not a combination I would have chosen, but holy crap they were good. They came with a little spicy ranch to dip them in, and I would have eaten the whole plate had I not been sharing with like 8 other people.
I had a pint of the Old Well White, which I was very impressed with. Very Blue Moon-ish, which I like a lot. Matt had the IPA, and he was impressed - said it tasted very similar to the Sweetwater IPA that he enjoys so much.
All in all, it was a positive experience at Top of the Hill. Next time we're in Chapel Hill I'd love to check it out on a quieter, non-game night.

Taxco Mexican Restaurant
Category: Mexican
Neighborhood: Buckhead
I've lived down the street from Taxco for over a year now, and had always driven past it and wondered, but never been. I went about 2 months ago when my sister was in town because we needed food, and why not, and Eric ad Laura said it was good. I was impressed right away with the menu and the prices - overpricing is usually a sign of not so authentic, a la On The Border and the like. Now don't get me wrong, On The Border can be just fine, just like Olive Garden can be just fine. But back to my point...
I had an enchilada, my sister had something I don't remember, my brother in law had Mexican Stew, and my niece had a chicken quesadilla. She's 2, so hers doesnt count. Standard kids meal - chicken, cheese, tortilla, the end. But the rest of were pretty impressed, especially when the bill came and it was something like $28 for all 4 of us.
However, I didn't want to write my review until I went again, because I hadn't had the margaritas yet.
So tonight I went back, with Eric and Laura. We started off with queso and margaritas, on the rocks with salt because that's how I roll. The queso was good. A little runny for my liking, but the flavor was excellent. The margaritas were REALLY good. Nothing frou frou about it - tequila, triple sec, and lime juice, just like its supposed to be. That right there was good enough to make me happy.
But then the food came. Someone mentioned Chicken Soup, and it feels like winter outside, and it kinda looks like winter outside... perfect chicken soup weather! I had been debating a tamale, so I asked- is it going to be as good as the old Mexican ladies on my street used to make for us at Easter? The waiter said that the same lady had been making them for them for 10 or 15 years. So I figured why not! And it was a good call. Because that tamale was EXCELLENT. As was the chicken soup. A huge bowl, great flavor to the broth, big pieces of chicken, and, the icing on the cake, several large chunks of avocado.
All in all, while its not the absolutely best Mexican food I've ever had in my life, it IS the best Mexican food I've had in Atlanta to this point. And I'll take what I can get. Yeah, its a bit dark and a bit dingy. But I've found, in most of the cities that I've visited both in the US and overseas, those tend to be the best ones.

Jack & Diane's
Category: American (Traditional)
Neighborhood: Buckhead
Too bad - like I said, it was far more expensive than it was worth, but it was nice for the occasional fancier dinner in the neighborhood. I won't miss it a TON, but I'll miss having it as an option.

First and foremost, the food at Jack and Diane's is OUTSTANDING.
BUT... only if someone else is paying!!!
As many others have mentioned, the prices here are exorbitant. While the $10 nacho plate is REALLY good, I'd much rather not pay $10 for nachos. The macaroni and cheese is really good too, but I only ate that when someone else paid for it.
I generally don't drink there because of the prices, but I have found that wine is probably the most reasonably priced. Not cheap, but $7-9 for a (fairly large compared to many restaurants) glass of wine sounds far better to me than $6 for a domestic beer.
There's a great big outside seating area, which is awesome. And there's lots of space in the area where the booths are. But in the bar area, there are just too many tables, and too many chairs, and it gets CROWDED. And the person talking about their nose touching the door in the ladies room? Not a joke.
With Wing Factory just across the parking lot, and 3 or 4 other restaurant options in the same shopping center, I'd skip this one every time.
Unless, of course, I like the band. But I'll eat first. And pregame.
That being said, I walked in and was immediately impressed with the cleanliness, size, and selection. I mean, it IS North Buckhead, so I'd expect a higher level of donations than I would even at the Sandy Springs store up the road. So the other day when Matt and I were out running errands, I said hey, let's pop in. Eric and Laura found some good stuff, and I could use a black jacket or two for job interviews and the like.
First of all, there were literally 2 full racks, front and back, of blazers and jackets. If Matt hadn't been with me and obviously bored to death, I would have gone through all of them. Because jackets are cute. And when they're $5.69, they're even cuter. In fact, I probably would have ended up going through the whole store. And I might well go back and do just that the next time he's in the studio. I should have done that today... darnit!
Anyways... I left with 2 black jackets - one more on the cute/casual side that I can wear with jeans, and one that's a little more dressy that I could put over a dress or with a skirt or pants. My grand total: Just under $12. The staff was nice - even making announcements that they were putting more stuff out in the linen section so check again before you leave. I hope that this location can keep it up!

We went for the music - a performer I've known for several years was there. We didn't eat, but I was definitely impressed with the menu and the looks of the few things I saw around.
I was absolutely impressed with the beer selection. The beer list was easy to read, and I'm not even sure that it reflected everything they had available. Prices aren't great - $5 range for most of the beers, which is the same as the super nice bar up the street. Probably a little high for this joint, but people pay it.
Parking is a little rough because of the closeness to the Variety Playhouse - if you're planning on heading over there, make sure you have alternative parking ideas, because if there's a halfway decent show over there, the parking lot will fill up quick.
As a music venue, the Five Spot made me happy. The place is small, but the sound is good- obviously their sound guy knows what he's doing. The stage fit a seven piece band and they didn't seem too cramped. There is ample standing room, although half of the bar area has a blocked view of the stage so if you want to sit at the bar and watch the music, get there early.
And probably my favorite part - its non smoking. Theres a little porch, so you can go outside and smoke and still be able to hear the music, but I can go home not reeking of second hand smoke.
The bathrooms could have used a little help - the ladies room was out of soap the first time I went in, before the headliner even went on, and the stall doors don't quite close enough to lock. But they were clean, and that's better than several other places I've been.
All in all, I enjoyed the experience. I'd love to go to more shows at the Five Spot, and maybe try some food next time.
