We popped in this afternoon for a couple of drinks and a little football, and I think we've found a new spot in the neighborhood.

First impression, I liked the space but wasn't so excited about the fact that the bartenders were totally OK with people saving seats at the bar on a crowded Sunday afternoon. But one of those groups offered us up one of the chairs they were saving, so while boyfriend had to stand, at least we had some space at the bar.

The beer list is outstanding. The drafts are pretty basic with a couple of good ones thrown in, and lots of bottles. Definitely not as good as the beer list at Rustico, but its up there. Prices are a little higher than I'd like them to be, but not awful.

They had wing specials going, so we got 10 wings. They were OUTSTANDING.  Plump and juicy on the inside, yet nice and crispy on the outside. I could have eaten a whole lot more than the 5 I ate!  The menu looked great, and everything we saw come out looked fantastic. And the prices seem right too.

Service at the bar was wonderful.  Usually I'm not comfortable being a smartass with the bartenders until I've been there a few times, but Aaron made us feel right at home from the time we walked in.

We will definitely be back to try out the happy hour specials and the regular weekday crowd. I wish we had tried this place a little sooner!

This review is for the weekend breakfast buffet only.

And man, what a buffet it is. I'm hesitant sometimes with buffets, because I'm never sure if I'm really going to eat enough to be worth it. But it was only a couple of dollars more than ordering off the menu, and there was no doubt that it was worth it.

Royal Restaurant is nothing fancy, which is usually what I'm looking for in breakfast. We perused the menu ahead of time, and liked what we saw. Which, by the way, was nothing about a buffet. But what a buffet.

The omelet/waffle guy was on his game. Probably one of the best omelets I've had in years, and boyfriend loved his waffle. Lots of meat options - bacon, ham, at least 2 types of sausage, creamed chipped beef, and sausage gravy. Hash browns. Donuts. Fruits. Everything a breakfast lover could ever want.

One downside, although not enough to knock a star - the online menu says the cocktails are $4.25. Apparently not for weekend breakfast, as we paid $6 each for a bloody mary and a mimosa. Still cheaper than anywhere else, though, so I'll take it.

One other note, although one that I'm perfectly OK with - we were by far the youngest people in the place for most of the time we were there. Granted, it was like 830 on a Saturday morning. But whatever. They know its good, right?

If you're looking for a solid, no frills weekend breakfast buffet, look no further. We will definitely be back.

I hadn't been to H St NE in probably 4 years, so not only had I never been to the Atlas before, but I barely recognized the neighborhood. So this event was fantastic for me on multiple fronts.

First of all, the space is AWESOME. Just walking up and seeing the dance rooms with people rehearsing and training, and walking in to the gorgeous lobby - I kind of wish I'd had a chance to explore the place a little! But I think I'll be back.

Add that to the chance to experience a couple of the restaurants that have popped up on H St since my last visit. The salmon nibbles from Smith Commons were fantastic - I wish I'd had more of the tartare, but I wanted to be nice and leave some for the others. The Red Velvet Waffles from Revive put me in a happy place, and made me want to learn how to make them. And how to make the bourbon syrup. YUM. And Schawafel... I had been excited about that since I saw it. A Schawarma place! Hooray! Of course, they brought falafel, and it was fantastic, but I can't wait to go back and try the schawarma.

Great spread of wine and beer from Harry's, although I wish there had been some non-alcoholic options as well, especially with as warm as the space got.

And what can I say about SpeakeasyDC other than I LOVED it. I'm a big fan of The Moth storytelling series, and always wished they would come to DC. Now i know that we have our own! I'm going to look into the story telling classes too.

A couple of reasons I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5. First, it seemed like there were just too many people for the event. With only 3 food vendors, the lines were ridiculously long, and they ran out. Perhaps a secondary effect of this, the story part of the evening, which I was most excited for, got started super late, and thus I was only able to stay for 3 of the 5 stories so as to not completely kill my workday today. (Yes, I'm a wimp when it comes to sleep. I know this.)

However, none of that changes the fact that I loved this event, and, as always, Kristin and her crew did a fantastic job. Can't wait for the next round!

ETA: OH!! I totally forgot about the awesomeness that was that jazz trio. I just wish we Yelpers had loved them a little more. Clap, people!! :)

3 stars for food, 3 for beer, 2 stars for service.

I hadn't been to this particular Cap City in probably close to 7 years, and the last time I was there I remember the food just being so so.  But I had a gift card, so I figured lunch couldn't be TOO bad.

We went for a late lunch, getting there around 3:15 on Saturday. The place was pretty dead, so we were seated immediately and told who our server would be.  Unfortunately, by the time said server showed up to take drink orders we'd already had plenty of time to peruse the menu, decide on our food, and decide on our beers. And for anyone that knows me, I take a minute to decide on food. He was nice and all, and once we ordered, the food came out quickly, but when boyfriend wanted another beer, he had to practically flag him down. Some people are OK with minimal wait staff presence, and I'm generally one of them, but this guy was a little TOO minimal.

The food, on the other hand, surprised me - much better than I remember it being last time I was there.  I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich with a side of vegetables, and boyfriend had the hickory burger with fries. My sandwich was fantastic. The chicken is marinaded in the amber beer, and it gave it a nice subtle sweetness. As much as it pains me to say it, because lord knows I love me some bacon and cheese and they make everything better, this chicken breast would have been perfectly good without them. It was that good. And it tasted like it had actually been grilled, not just baked then thrown on a grill pan for marks. The veggies were also fantastic. Usually with the zucchini/squash/carrot blend you risk a pile of mush on your plate, but these were sauteed to perfection, still just the right amount of crispy, and seasoned nicely with what seemed to be some fennel and italian seasoning. YUM. Boyfriend's burger was cooked just the way he wanted it, and he said the fries were very tasty.

The beers were good. I had the Cherry Chocolate Stout on cask, which the server said was too sweet for him but I didn't get much sweetness at all. The cherry was a nice subtle aftertaste. Boyfriend had the triple/double to start, which he said was more like an IPA than a tripel, and then the porter, which he liked a lot.

All in all, lunch was good. Nothing that makes me want to come back immediately, but definitely wouldn't avoid this place completely. Its not really in a neighborhood I frequent (lets just say last time I was in Shirlington, none of the new stuff (Harris Teeter, big new garage, all the on that side of the street) existed yet), so I won't likely be there often, but I wouldn't take it off the list of possibilities.

I don't have a ton of experience with cobbler shops outside of getting uniform shoes fixed while I was at the Naval Academy, but for my $12, they sure do an awesome job replacing the little taps on the bottoms of my heels, which I somehow manage to kill on a regular basis.

That's not the only thing I've taken to them - I have a pair of Doc Martens sandals that I LOVE, and the stitching was coming out of one of them. I took them in and within a couple of days they had it all sewn up, good as new, and they didn't charge me an arm and leg to do it.

Its a little, modest shop just off King Street, and you'll miss it if you're not looking hard, but they do a great job, and I recommend them to anyone who thinks they've ruined a pair of heels.

Came here for best friend's birthday in a group of 7 ladies, and 3 of us, thanks to Metro and other issues, were nearly 30 minutes late for the reservation. So of course we're worried about whether or not everyone else will have gotten together (birthday girl was with me) since some hadn't met each other before, whether they would have seated the group without all of us, and, honestly, whether or not we still had our reservation.

So we were thrilled when we arrived to find the girls seated and enjoyed cocktails, with not a word spoken or facial expression shown with regards to our tardiness by anyone on the staff. That was the start of what was to be outstanding service the entire evening.

I'm not even going to try to list all the different foods that we had, but we all ate something different. We each had an appetizer, except two shared the mussels. Plates were passed some, but I didn't try anything by my own - the black gnocchi, which was the lightest, fluffiest gnocchi I had ever tasted in a sauce I had to refrain from drinking like milk in a cereal bowl when I was done and three beautiful shrimp. YUM.

For entrees, we again each ordered something different, and this time I think just about everyone tasted at least 4 other entrees. Everything I tasted was AMAZING - the entree gnocchi, the lasagna, the scallops, and something else that I can't remember. My entree was the short rib risotto, and it was absolutely delicious. A couple of the girls thought it was too salty, but for me, it was fantastic.

Our server made sure our glasses never got too close to empty, and that we had everything we needed the entire night. He even brought out a birthday tiramisu, complete with candle, for the birthday girl. Never once over the more than 3 hours we were there did we feel rushed, even when I'm pretty sure we were the last table (or close to it) left in the place.  The atmosphere was fantastic, the people were very nice, and the bathroom was just too cute :)

The portions are big, but the prices are not at all - I was actually surprised at how reasonable the prices were. The wine and cocktail list was not lacking, and everyone found something they liked. No complaints from anyone, and very little food left on plates at the end of the night. All in all, a definite win.

Kimchi House

Category: Korean

4.0 star rating
12/30/2011
This is really a 4.5 star review, but based on a couple of factors, I'm bumping down to 4. And, to be perfectly honest, this was my first time in a Korean restaurant, so maybe I'll come in and update it to 5 once I have something to compare it to :)

I've driven past this little house on the side of route one hundreds of times, and always wondered if it was any good. So when a coworker wanted to get Korean for lunch and someone said this place was good, I was intrigued. I'd had kimchi before, and had bulgogi once at a little Korean-owned deli, but I'd never really had Korean food. I was not disappointed.

Three of the coworkers that came along had been stationed in Korea, so they helped out. We started with dumplings, which were really tasty. For entrees, they suggested the Bi Bim Bap in a hot pot (which isn't on the lunch menu, but you can get the lunch portion in the hot pot for $2 extra).  Boyfriend ordered the short rib dish at the top of the menu, and two other coworkers had spicy chicken and bulgogi. We all cleaned our plates.  The hot pot was fascinating - I want to know what keeps it so hot! I absolutely loved the Bi Bim Bap - the flavors were fantastic, and the hot pot kept the meal hot all the way through. Boyfriend's short ribs were delicious, but there seemed to be an awful lot of gristle on the meat, and lots of bones.

The little side dishes that came out with the food (kimchi, some daikon slaw (I think), bean sprouts, pickled cucumbers, and potato) were delicious. I could have eaten an entire bowl of the potatoes, and the kimchi was fantastic. I was really surprised at how much of the meal was vegetable - had I eaten a similar lunch at most Chinese places I feel like I would have left feeling bloated and heavy. Instead, I left full, but in a comfortable way, and I didn't feel like I had gorged myself.

The ladies that run the place were super sweet and appreciated that a couple of my coworkers were able to say a few words in Korean. When our server realized that some of us had never been to a Korean restaurant before she seemed to be happy that we were there. And none of our water glasses ever got below half full. I think we confused her a little bit with the check splitting, so I think next time we'll try to all have cash.

Oh, and I didn't even mention the fact that prices are awesome.  Their lunch specials are all under $10, even the Bi Bim Bap hot pot. Can't beat that. The parking lot is a little small, and there aren't really marked spaces, so you just kind of have to figure it out.

All in all, I feel like I've been missing out by not doing Korean food before now. I will definitely be going back!

You know, I really should have read the other reviews on here before suggesting we hit up PP for dinner last night. Perhaps we might have headed to Red Rocks instead.  If there were half stars, I'd be giving 2.5, but the service was good so I'll bump up to 3.

Our wait was just what they said it would be - about 5-10 minutes. There was plenty of room for the high chair for our friends' baby, and the server was awesome with him as well. Drinks came out quickly, although we were a bit bummed to realize that there's no liquor, as one of the friends doesn't do beer. She managed with a glass of Riesling, though. And the beer list was fantastic.

I ordered the roasted elephant garlic app and friend ordered a salad. Her salad looked awesome, and perfectly dressed. She said it was quite tasty. The garlic was OK. Milder than most roasted garlic I've had, and I think they used too much olive oil in the roasting process, because it was all just a big pile of mush. But the taste was good, and I really liked the bread.

For pizzas, boyfriend ordered the atomica, I had the genovese, and friends each made their own.  Theirs looked great - evenly distributed toppings and the right amount of crust to pick it up. Mine and boyfriends, though, were a little on the disappointing side. He ordered a 12 inch and I had an 8, but they were both a good 40% edge crust with WAY too many bubbles.  It was kind of ridiculous that in my 8 inch pizza, each slice only had one bite of toppings and the rest was crust. The flavors were awesome, but that was a steep price to pay for mostly pizza dough. Boyfriend was actually pretty bothered by it, and spoke with a manager, who was super cool and said next time to tell them right away and they'll redo the pizza. One of the friends worked in a pizza joint in school, and said it looked to him like they hadn't spiked the dough to get the air bubbles out before they cooked it, and it probably just pushed all the toppings to the center. They ended up taking half off boyfriend's pizza, which they totally didn't have to do, but we appreciated it.

Service was REALLY good - we noticed a few times that if something sat a little too long, another server would jump in and pick up a plate or grab a check. They seem to work well together as a team.  But I know of at least 3 places off the top of my head where I like the pizza better, and they're less expensive. I think I'll be sticking to them.

Extra Perks Coffee Shop

When I used to get my nails done next door to here, I'd stop in for a cup of coffee while I waited and peruse with glee all the British snacks and candies I remembered from when I lived in London as a kid. When I stopped getting my nails done next door, I missed the part where they expanded and actually started serving real food. And I now know that I've been missing out.

We stopped in for breakfast Monday morning after Christmas, figuring it would just be the breakfast menu, but it turned out that for the holiday they were doing brunch. What a nice surprise, because that meant their entire menu was available. Boyfriend decided there's nothing better for breakfast than fish and chips, and we were both relieved that he could get what he had set his heart on :)  I ordered the Enlish breakfast, and we both ordered English breakfast tea, which came out in big steaming mugs.

His fish and chips were delicious, he says. The fries were thick cut and the fish was battered just right and cooked perfectly. He also enjoyed the cole slaw, which was of the less creamy and more vinegary variety. My breakfast was awesome. The banger was just right, the bacon was just right mix of crisp and chewy.  I could have gone for a few more (or larger) grilled tomatoes and mushrooms, but other than that, it was all the breakfast I could have wanted.

Prices are just a smidge higher than I would like, but I'm willing to overlook that for a good breakfast. And this is absolutely a good breakfast. We'll be back.

Another great event by the lovely ladies of DC Yelp!  Excellent food, excellent people, and an awesome Sad Gingey glitter tattoo - can't get any better than that!!

HUGE thanks to Kellari Taverna for the amazing spread of food, and for making sure that everyone got to try everything. The mimosas were flowing, and they only ran out of orange juice, not the important stuff ;)  Probably the first Yelp event I've left feeling full.

All in all, a fantastic event. Thanks Kristin!!
