I'm sitting in the airport for my flight back to the bay area and thought it was a great time to write about my trip to Blue Hill last night. I've been in NY for work (fashion week madness) and at around 10pm last night I finally stopped working because I realised I hadn't eaten all day. I pulled up the Open Table app on my phone and saw Blue Hill had an 11pm reservation. Perfect! I'd eaten at Blue Hill at Stone Barns (Yelp review: http://www.yelp.c...) and had wanted to try the NYC location, so it was perfect.
I got off the subway at 11pm sharp so I dialed up the restaurant and let them know I'd be just a few minutes (for their last reservation of the evening). Since it was truly just a few minutes, they were happy to oblige.
I walked in and it was a warm and inviting respite from the snow outside. Someone took my coat and I was seated. They actually paid attention to my reservation for one, and only one place setting was on the table. Nice. I've gone places solo before and the assumption is usually that someone else must be joining me. Anyway, I opted for the tasting menu with wine pairings.
First were some small amuses-bouche (the little beet "burger," some piece of smoked meat, and a cup of roasted parsnip pureed soup). Served with a sparking wine. All tasty.
The first course was grilled scallops with soybeans, golden beets, pine nuts, and something else I can't quite remember (grapefruit?). Served with an Austrian white, which I can't recall (I can't seem to recall any of the wines with specificity). Really good. The textures of the nuts, beans, and beets worked really well together.
Second course was lobster with spaghetti squash (in some sort of mustard-y sauce), chestnuts, and other local shellfish. Also good. The mustard was almost overpowering, but it was all very good together. The other shellfish pieces (small and scattered around the edges of the plate) were rather chewy. Served with a white, the grapes of which are grown on the location of an old sulfur mine, apparently. I kept trying to decide how I felt about this wine. It wasn't overly flavourful but it definitely had a certain something unusual about it.
Main course was venison two ways. Loin and sausage. You guys, this was so good. Amazingly, this was my first time trying venison and I was expecting something much more game-y. It was much milder than I thought it would be and it was great.
Dessert was a wheat pudding with a grapefruit sorbet and granola on top. Nothing fancy, but the pudding was delicious. The warm/cool contrast and the textures were great.
All in all a really solid meal. I'd love to go back not on my own too. The place is definitely good for romantic evenings.
