Papa Cristo's

The best advice I can give you about this place (sadly, having only been once) is that you MUST go with at least 2 other people and order as many different items as you can, pick out a couple of Greek beers, and sit out on the patio and enjoy a lingering feast!

But, whatever you order, you must, must, MUST order the oktapodakia (baby octopus). Holy sweet Bacchus!!! (sorry, hope that doesn't offend any practicing Greek mythologists... which is probably not what you call it... sorry)

I know what you might be thinking... Octopus? No thanks, it's chewy.

WRONG.

It's nice and crispy (from grilling?) on the outside and bathed in lemon olive oily goodness. Every single person at our table moaned in ecstasy at how it crunched then melted away in our respective mouths. TRUST me, you'll win friends and influence people with this one.

On the downside, the moussaka was a bit stodgy but that could have also just been that one dish, would definitely still try it again.

Oktapodakia, I'm tellin' ya!

Daikokuya

Neighborhoods: Downtown, Little Tokyo

Every time I even get close to Downtown, Daikokuya dances on my brain. I don't even know why there are other ramen places in the area. Probably only to handle the spillover or latecomers from Daikokuya.

Get the special. It's the special for a reason. And, if you're extra hungry, or just feel like being a glutton (like I always seem to be in the mood for) order some gyoza. Perfect balance of crispy caramelization, green onion, and filling.

But, the ramen is why you go. Buttery cutlet, soft boiled egg, beautiful springy noodles. I'm hungry now!

Not a fan of the new yellow awning though. Expect to wait a bit at peak hours. But wait! You won't regret it, and your friends will think you're awesome!
