Fort Knox Studios

This is one of the best monthly rehearsal studios I've seen. The monthly rooms start at $425/month, which is a little above average. However, I'd say that Knox is much nicer than dingier places that cost almost as much. The soundproofing is excellent. We played on a Thursday night, and the place was crowded, but we could only hear minimal bleed from the neighbors.  Ladies, big selling point of this spot is that the bathrooms are clean and have TP, a rarity in any rehearsal studio. The location is a little far out there in portage, but it's right next to the expressway, so that's pretty accessible. Look forward to coming back.  Recommended.

I'm torn about giving this place such a terrible review. It really depends on the day and the sales person you deal with. For instance, buying a condenser microphone recently, I had a very good experience with a sales guy who didn't treat me like a dope, knew what he was talking about, and ended up selling me a good used mic that wasn't a ripoff. On the other hand, buying a little bass amp on a different day it was the same old uncomfortable rigamarole I experienced when I first shopped here ten years ago -- some dude using scare tactics to try to convince me I needed a bigger amp or some insurance policy. Is this treatment reserved for women?

Here's what I will say on the positive side for old GC: sometimes you need a certain piece of equipment, know what you want, and need it in a hurry. This is a good place for those needs. They have a large inventory and you can count on most standard, brand-name stuff being in stock. By the same token, this is also a good place to try out a variety of equipment if you're shopping around for something and not sure what you want.

Otherwise, not so enthralling.

The guys who work here work on commission. Remember that, kids. They will ALWAYS try to upsell you to something you will never need for your purposes. Unfortunately, most of the employees here are not knowledgeable about what they're selling, so you can't count on even getting guidance. Here's my advice. Educate yourself on the internet about what your options are and how much they should cost. Go here to try stuff out in person. Ignore the sales routine. Then go home and buy it on musicians' friend. Only really great thing about this store? The free parking.

If there was a competition for "worst Jewel in Chicago" this guy might win the prize. The selection was terrible and the produce was gross. It was almost impossible to assemble a dinner here. Want a salad? You'll need to settle for a wilted, saggy, brown mixture. How about some fruit? Well, you might find a few non-moldy berries, but they'll cost you. A nice fish filet? No dice.

i bought some ice cream which turned out to be freezer burned. Yeah, I'll take some ptomaine poisoning with my dinner. Just what I wanted. Thanks.

Seriously, seriously terrible.  Do not make my mistake. Go to Edgewater Produce across the street. Save your money; save your sanity; go home with edible food.

Wonderful food, fancy cocktails and wicked cute server. Loved it!

The space is swanky and stylish. Reclaimed wood plus glam chandeliers? Hot. Low lights and sleek furniture? Yes.

The small plates we tried (fancy fries and chick peas) were good and reasonably priced. Our gin cocktails were pretty and delicious.

I went with my BFF and we both agreed that we wanted to come back with our significant others to canoodle under the pretty lights.

I'm quite bummed about the new management of this formerly stellar food court. They used to have some really good eats when managed by Aramark; now, it's less great. Indian food in particular disappoints. The old Indian station was my favorite loop lunch. Marigold's tastes fine, but is more like Thai than Indian. American classics station is also less awesome -- no more mac and cheese, no more good rolls. I miss the old plaza food court. Grumble grumble.

Coolest store in Chicago, bar none! Andy offers a perfectly curated collection of electronic music doodads, lovely local wares, unique books, and photography. I can't get over what a cool, eclectic, fun place this is. Make Transistor gift shopping central for your creative friends and lovers.

Ronny's is a true dive -- a nondescript brick garage converted into a music venue. Incense is burning in the front bar room (god knows what kind of odor they are trying to cover up!) But there's a pool table, and some cheap beer deals -- $2 Stroh's cans the night I was there.  The music room is fun. It's big and open, the stage is made of plywood, and there's plenty of room for your friends to boogie, mosh, or act the fool while your band plays. It's got that basement show vibe, but with a better PA system. The sound girl was really cool. Overall, a solid place to play a sloppy, beer-soaked show.

Specimen Guitar Repair Shop

My guitar amp's not vintage or fancy, but I love it.  And when the reverb stopped working, I was sad.

Ian and his staff got the little guy sounding its best again in short order. The repairs were efficient and reasonably priced. Ian kept me apprised of progress and called me to ask whether I wanted new tubes installed (a helpful, but not imminently necessary maintenance item). The amp was back to me in a couple of days and sounds much, much peppier and way reverby again.

I've also had guitars of varying levels of crappiness set up here in the past, all of which were improved by Specimen's caring work.

This is also an extremely cool place to look around, with lots of custom guitars, amps and speakers being constructed right there on the premises.

Two important items for weaklings such as myself who prefer not to lug heavy equipment farther than necessary: Street parking right outside their shop is easy, but you will have to carry your shit up one flight of stairs.

Silvie's Lounge

Update - 3/23/2012
Silvies is still weird and still kind of charming.

They recently redid and improved the interior. It sounds better, the stage is bigger, and the new silvery wall paper looks pretty cool. The stage is now in the back of the room, and the lighting and sound systems are both really nice for a room that size.

Silvie's husband is still micro-managing everything (in a well meaning, but nonetheless overbearing way).  Still, it's a nice room for a local show. It's cute, comfy and fun. Silvie and her husband are sweet and like music and the people who play it.

Fan.

I had a lot of fun playing here. Silvie is funny, sweet and awesome -- she gave us shots and cheetos, showed us her new computer, and told stories. Love her!  The stage is small, but adequate for a four-member band. The bands are eclectic. The main room has comfy seating -- maybe too comfy, 'cause the kids don't get up and dance too much.

    Fun, fun bar.

I'm not going to bother with other $15 manicures any more. This is hands-down the best one. You'll feel pampered and happy and your digits will look great. You'll also enjoy a lovely little shoulder massage. Good selection of polish. Sweet employees. Very clean and relaxing. You don't feel like you're on a conveyor belt. Way above average.
