CLOSED AS OF 1/24/09

This place had the absolute worst service I've ever seen in my entire life. I can understand why he recently went out of business. We went there three times, we only ate there once, which was the first time. The food was pretty good that first time, but the next two times we went we waited around for 15-20 minutes awaiting service but never got any. The second time we actually went up to the counter to order and they told us to take a seat and they'd come around (which they never did).

Yeah, understand why they closed doors. Sounds like he is still planning on having a Catering service which might work a lot better as if he is on site, service should be much less of an issue.

BEST DELI OUTSIDE OF NY/NJ AREA! :)

Okay, I don't know that for a fact, but Napoli's is every bit as good as all the various places I've been with my wife in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island and other parts of the NY/NJ area that's she taken me. We absolutely love Napoli's and the new spot is really nice if a little hard to find.

You have to have their Cannoli for desert as well... mmmmmm.... so very tasty.

The Heart Stopper or Heart Attack or something is the best damn cold sub I think I've ever had as well. The Steak 'n Cheese Special is a little messy, but just wow!

Also, you can load up on cold cuts when you leave and be in heaven for a few days after leaving. :)

Ug, hate that Lucy had a bad experience at OBW. :( Do agree that she should have said something the staff would have been happy to help if given the chance.

As for Stephen M. that was there on NYE, that is really strange. We too were there on NYE 2009/2010 and must say that we had an excellent experience that very same night. We got there earlier, so not sure if the staff got wore down or what. Our food was as impeccable as always as was the service.

Sucks that folks won't just say something as I'm sure the staff and Ed (the owner/head chef) will do everything in their power to make things right.

From the moment we first read a local newspaper review of One Block West, we were quite intrigued by the restaurant. Once we investigated the website, we knew we had to experience it. The welcoming nature of the website is carried through at the restaurant. The owner and chef, Ed Matthews states on the home page that he "likes having his friends over for dinner." With such a quaint statement you may not realize just how good of a meal that friend of yours can cook!

Ed's passion is evident in the restaurant's very concept. Menus are created each day and posted on the website by 4pm. Those menus are driven by what Ed finds in local markets and are the freshest ingredients available. He uses as many local ingredients as he can for all of his dishes. If it isn't local, you can rest assured that it will be exotic and of the highest quality.

One Block West (OBW) is the best meal in Winchester that we have found. It is not at all pretentious. Perhaps a person will look at the prices and expect something different. I assure you the prices are there for the quality. If OBW were in Fairfax, the prices would easily be quite a bit higher. Personally I'm glad the prices are reasonable compared to what I am used to in Fairfax!

If you know us, you know that we are as about as far from pretentious as you can get. We've felt welcomed every time we've been to OBW. While I do understand that a nice meal for a special occasion can call for dressing up, generally when we go out for dinner we're there for the food and the drink and the flavors and satisfaction that they bring. OBW is a place where it really is about enjoying an excellent meal; not showing off your accomplishments. I'm sure a few patrons views things differently, but that's the beauty we can all be different and still love great food.

It seems every night Ed has somewhat exotic proteins on the menu. We've had wild boar, elk, venison, and ostrich just to name a few. We can't imagine you'll be disappointed by trying something new; we haven't at least. Ed will also prepare a vegetarian meal if asked, so if that is what you are seeking, just speak up!

I know I like good wine. I know nothing about wines though. I have tried to learn more in the past, but I didn't have the passion for it and have forgotten the very little I knew. On the OBW menu, each entree has a suggested wine. We often take the recommendations and while I could not describe why, I can certainly say that they always pair very nicely with my meal.

One of my favorite first courses available has been the prosciutto wrapped scallops. Last night I had pulled pork in wontons in ham hock broth. It was sort of a South meets Far East food. It was incredible and I will get it every time it is on the menu from now on!

The best second course I've had was the ostrich. It really wasn't what I was expected at all, but was very pleasing. I've had the filet mignon and it was an excellent cut of beef. I do like my filet extremely rare though and it came closer to medium rare even though I ordered rare. You may want to stress extra-rare just to make sure it is cooked where you'd like it. After all it easy to send back for just a little more cooking if needed.

A couple of visits now, we've had the Virginia Cheese Tray before dessert. Wow! We really didn't realize Virginia had such tasty cheese. Served with a date and crackers they have made an excellent transition to dessert.

As for desserts, I get the same thing every time. Perhaps I should venture out but the chocolate bread pudding is simply so very perfect, I want nothing else! I've had the bananas foster the first night which was very tasty as well.

    I can't recommend OBW enough!

Quite a pleasant surprise. We have often passed right by Mr. Noodle and chuckled about the name thinking we'd never go there. Last week, we decided to give it a try as our usual Sushi place in town was closed for weekday lunches.  Very glad this opportunity came up for us!

Is it the best Sushi ever? No, not really. Is it pretty dog gone good though? Heck yeah! The flavor was actually fine on everything we had, the construction wasn't the best with a few pieces falling apart. While that was annoying, it was still enjoyable.

The Shrimp Tempura Udon soup I had though was quite excellent. The Pho that I saw delivered to a table beside us looked excellent as well. The Kimchi was incredible too. The seaweed salad was a LOT BETTER than our normal place.

All-in-all, we're very happy and will likely return today. I'll be trying the Pho... and of course having some more Kimchi!

Also, the place was immaculately CLEAN! The CLEANEST restroom I've seen in ANY restaurant ever I do believe. That makes me very happy and believe that the owners really care deeply about hygiene.

Woot! An excellent BBQ join in Winchester. I'm happy! Their meats seem to be cooked mostly unsauced (if not completely) and you add your own choice of sauce. I had the four-choice combo with Ribs, Pulled Pork, Pulled Chicken, and Cajun Catfish. My wife had Pulled Port, Cajun Catfish, and the Beef Brisket.

We asked for a sample of all of the sauces, and they were all delicious. I wasn't crazy about the mustard sauce or the "fire" or whatever the hottest sauce was called, but they were still tasty. The North Carolina sauce was pretty good, but was too much vinegar. Need just a touch of tomato paste (I think) and chili powder to get closer to Lexington, NC style sauce.... well, at least Lexington BBQ. The Lexington style "red" slaw was good very close, but too much vinegar, back off a bit and it would have been perfect actually. Their pork rinds and potato chips are cooked on-site and tasty as well.

Enough about sauce and sides. You go to a BBQ place for the meat!

The ribs aren't like any I've had before. Not bad, just different. I got them dry and was expecting Memphis style. Instead they were very much like the ribs I'd have at a home cooked pig picken' in North Carolina. The meet was basically the pulled pork that hadn't been pulled yet. Again, not bad, just never had ribs like that before. If I ever get the ribs again, I'll just get them wet (which even as dry, they were pretty wet already).

The pulled pork was damn good. I wish it was chopped (did I mention I spent the first 23 years of my life in North Carolina?) but it was good as pulled pork. I used the North Carolina vinegar sauce on it, and was happy.

The pulled chicken I think was probably the best. I used the bourbon sauce (NC style with bourbon?) and was quite happy with it.

Had a bite of the beef brisket, was great with the Texas Mesquite sauce on it.

The Cajun Fried Catfish was ok. Needed more hot pepper in the breading. I won't get it again unless they make it spicier or have some Tony Chechere's Cajun Seasoning on the table for it. Was kinda bland as is.

The carrot cake was awesome. :)

Overall it was damn good BBQ. Wasn't great, but frankly if you're not going to Lexington BBQ in Lexington, NC or Country Kitchen in Greensboro, NC... can you even get great BBQ? I think not.

It seems I start some of my reviews off the same way... I really, really, really wanted to love this place, but in the end it just didn't deliver for me.

As awesome as the hush puppies and corn bread were at first, the place definitely has potential and I hope someone else comes along if they have a different opinion and gives their take on the restaurant. It is a very clean and very nice looking restaurant down by a marina. It has tons of promise.

Our food though wasn't exactly to our liking. Seafood seems to be a hard thing to review. The same restaurant (heck the same meal) can be one man's bait is another man's ambrosia. For myself, Captain Tom's in Kernersville, NC is by far my favorite seafood. It is North/South Carolina Calabash Style and I only wish I could recreate it outside of the Carolina's, but I don't think I ever will be able to.

I went to Slightly Up The Creek with my mom and step-dad. We drove past it before we went to a museum to check it out and make sure it looked like some place we'd like to go. Of course, I should clarify that one can't merely "drive past" this place. :) It is at the end of a very long residential street. Several times we thought about turning around and giving up, but we kept trudging along, then at the very last moment of patience you come around a very sharp curve, and BOOM there it is!

There is also a marina next door and boat docks. Very nice atmosphere and from the looks of you just want to believe you're going to find that perfect Seafood you're looking for!

When you walk up, there is outdoor seating available, and a sign proclaiming the 2009 People's Choice award for the local paper. That also inspired confidence in us! We walked in and the restaurant looks really clean and neat on the inside. Definitely nothing scary and made the place appealing. We went there on a lazy Sunday afternoon well before dinner time at 3:30pm. There was another couple that had just sat down before us, but other than that, empty.

We had excellent service from the host, server, and another server making sure water was full. Everyone was very friendly, attentive, and professional.

After ordering we were brought corn bread and hush puppies as bread service. Wow. Just wow, wow, wow. :) Talk about tasty! Mmmmm. Sweet corn bread that tasted almost like cake. Hush puppies were awesome, though I generally like a little minced onion, but they were great as they were. We were already talking about coming back on Wednesday when my sister is flying in to Newport News.

My mom ordered the broiled flounder with rice pilaf and cole slaw. My step-dad ordered the Captain's Platter (Fried Flounder, Shrimp, and Scallops) with mashed potatoes and cole slaw. I ordered the Admiral's Platter (Fried Flounder, Shrimp, Scallops, Oysters, and Crab Cake) and rice pilaf and cole slaw.

Everything seemed to be going great. The waitress stopped by and let my step-dad know that the mashed potatoes weren't going to be ready for about 20 minutes, would he like to change to something else. He decided to just get the mashed potatoes late. The food came and the plates looked awesome. Appropriately portioned... while normally I think I might complain about what seemed to be light on the portion size, let's face it, we are WAAAAAY too used to portions that are MUCH LARGER than they should be. When you see proper portions sizes, it looks smaller than you are expecting, but it is a proper portion.

My step dad gave me his scallops as he doesn't like them, so I took them and had the first bite of food. The scallop was awesome! It was everything I was hoping for and tasted great. Lightly breaded and at least tasted fresh. I announced that I was very glad we found this place!

Then my mom took a byte of her cole slaw. Ug she said. I took a bite of my flounder, frozen I said. She tried hers and agreed. My step-dad tried one his shrimp, pretty good... tried his flounder, not so much.

Other than the flounder which had that spongy texture that made us believe it had been frozen, our problem was mostly what I was talking about at the start of this review. One man's bait is another's ambrosia. I will say that I'm sure there are people who would have loved the meal, for us, it just wasn't exactly what we like. We ended up putting a little Splenda in the cole slaw which helped, some butter (and salt for me) in the rice pilaf which helped, I had to rely on tartar sauce to enjoy my crab cake (I normally don't like tartar sauce), and cocktail sauce to help my oysters. I normally don't use any sauce too much.

Again, while I only gave it two stars, that is our personal opinion, I certainly think others should try it and see if they've found their ambrosia.

Four Color Fantasies

One of the best comic books stores I've been in. My wife is now into reading comics, and even though I have been out of it for about 15 years, I love to go with her and just browse and chat. Back in the late 80's and early 90's I went to a LOT of different comic book stores across the Carolinas, southern Virginia, Georgia, and Tennessee. Some were extremely well organized but very sterile. Some felt like home, but you could never find anything! Four Color Fantasies is in that very intersection of a well organized, and very friendly, home!

Also, be sure to pick up a couple of handfuls of Jelly Belly's from the quarter operated candy jar!

The Union Jack Pub & Restaurant

It does look like quite the bar! If I was only rating it on the bar area, then perhaps I would have an entirely different review. The design and decoration of the establishment is top notch, quite amazing actually. Wish there hadn't been a private party upstairs so we could have checked it out too, but if the first floor with its 20? 25? foot ceilings are any indication, I'm sure the appoints are superb there too. What I thought was missing, at least from my experience in pubs in London are cozy four poster booths.

However, this isnt a review about the bar or the decor, my review is about what we were going there for: food and service. I was wanting a Shepard's Pie (only available at lunch evidently) and a nice evening at a table talking with my wife with attentive flowing service and good food. This is not the place for that. Granted, it is the first week, so the kitchen and the wait staff can only improve (I hope) in attentiveness and speed.

The food was VERY British, and by that I mean, not so tasty, but if you're in London, you'll find the same! I had the Chicken and Lump Crab cake with Jacket Potatoes and French (Cut?) Green beans. The chicken was good, the crab was just crab with no real seasoning or breading in the cake. The green beans were not good, certainly not French (cut). My Jacket Potatoes, weren't. I had never had them before but a quick search of the Internet from my phone made them sound awesome. Either the kitchen messed up and served me the wrong thing or frankly their fingerling potatoes are the same as their jacket potatoes. Disappointed.

The did have a good drought beer selection. However, this is Winchester, Virginia... most of the good beer is going to be flat within a week or two. I had a nice Belgium though, and it was quite tasty (Delirium Nocturnum Belgian Ale). But I'm not sure my fellow Winchesterians are going to venture to good beer when they have cheap bad beer available... at least not often enough to keep fresh kegs in place.

I would give the place 2.5 stars if I could, it is a LOT like the pubs I've been to in London, so they have caught the right atmosphere and food.

However the service really sucks right now, it was a Friday night... and it was their very first Friday night ever. The staff was friendly, if not frequently seen. It took about 10-15 minutes before we got our menus. Then about 10 minutes for our drink and appetizers orders to go in. The drinks came back around after about 10 minutes, then appetizers came after about another 20 minutes, then the meals came about 30 minutes after the appetizers, then it took about 10 minutes after we asked for the check to get it. I paid in cash instead of my Amex just to avoid the further delays. One and a half hours, for what should have been a quick pub meal.

I felt bad for the waitress, because there was no way she was getting tips from anyone else, so we left a nice 50% tip... hopefully we didn't encourage the slow behavior though, I just felt bad for her with so many fellow diners looking upset and some even walking out before drink orders.

Gander Mountain

 Update - 11/22/2008
Went by Gander Mountain today to see what kind of used pistols they had. Found an excellent condition (on the exterior) USED Sig P225 (P6) for a decent enough price. I asked to break it down so I could look for wear on the feed ramp, the lock-up, the inside o the barrel, safety mechanism, etc... Was told by the clerk "No, can't allow that as it causes too much wear and tear" WHAT?!?!

Folks, this was a USED firearm, not a new one. I can fully understand if this was a new gun, but it wasn't. Heck I could even understand if it was a Certified Pre-Owned P225 from the Sig factory as it would have the certification seal. But NO, this was a USED gun. I'd have to be really dumb to just hand some money over for a used firearm that I haven't inspected and deserve whatever crap I got.

Winchester Gander Mountain has lost a customer who has already purchased a couple of firearms and other gear (~$4000 to date) from them and who generally really enjoyed just spending time in their store. Yeah, I have better places to spend my money.

Was very happy to see Gander Mountain open here in Winchester. They carry all the items I need to enjoy my outdoor experiences. They also have a quite a decent selection of used handguns that I was happy to take one of off their hands. They have a room for use by organizations as well that has lots of their comfy backwoods furniture in, and when not in use they often have videos playing on various outdoor subjects. A good selection, and while the focus is on hunting and fishing more than anything else, they have most of your outdoor needs covered.

Mimosa Asian Fusion Restaurant

 Update - 11/22/2008
Oh well. After more than a month, they've only gotten worse. I really hope they stop trying to be so creative on their Chinese dishes. There are ways to make them fresh and new without going so far overboard.

For example, the second visit we got Steamed Vegetable Dumplings. My wife took a bite and made a face. I tried one and also made a face. There was CREAM CHEESE in our Steamed Vegetable Dumpllings!?!? My wife didn't even finish the second half. I adjusted my mindset, told myself they were just Crab Rangoon without the crab and steamed instead of fried. They weren't horrible after that, but frankly... we ordered Steamed Vegetable Dumplings!

The Hot 'n' Sour Soup was still fantastic. You can get the bowl of that and it is a meal unto itself. :)

We ended up getting mostly Sushi for dinner. It was ok on some bites and scary on others. The tuna was fresh. The flounder on the Rainbow Roll was very close to bad though. Again the rolls were stuffed with more stuff than would allow the seaweed to wrap around, so rolls were popping open.

Even with only two other tables it was still loud. The stupid radio station was still blaring from behind the bar. The humongous saltwater fish tanks still weren't fully operational. You want to love the atmosphere, but it just doesn't work.

We've been waiting for Mimosa to open for many months now. They finally opened five days ago. Before I dig into the guts of the place... I'll say that everyone needs a little time to work the kinks out, and they are still in that phase. We'll revisit in a month and I'll update the review if it is warranted.

The look of the restaurant is quite modern; fish tanks, patio, black and red colors. So, looks and atmosphere looks great. Unfortunately you then sit down and try and talk to the other members of your dinner party. This is the first bad thing. Really bad acoustics, extremely loud in the restaurant with the open ceiling, which looks modern and industrial but reflects noise like you won't believe. We couldn't hear each other through the whole meal and were yelling to get some communication going.

Service, this is where I'm sure the kinks will be worked out... I hope. Everyone is extremely slow, but they are definitely trying to find their groove. To summarize the service it was very friendly, slow and not nearly attentive enough.

Food, this is why I hope you came to a restaurant. I will say all of the ingredients were of top quality and very fresh. The tastes though were very hit or miss. The Hot n' Sour soup was some of the best I've ever had... that was the highlight of the meal.

We started with their Fried Jalapeno Calamari. It was ok. Calamari was fresh at least. They had a bit too much breading and not enough Jalapeno's for me. The Wasabi Mayo sauce was good, but not great. Overall, the starter was just ok; the tastes didn't knock our socks off like I was hoping for.

Did I mention the Hot n' Sour soup? Mmmmm. Yummy! :)

We tried a Sushi roll to see how things were in the Sushi department. We ordered a Rainbow roll which is a nice sampling of several fishes over a basic California Roll. All the fish was fresh and tasty (but I would expect that as they just opened). The roll's construction wasn't great though, the nori wasn't wide enough to fit around the California roll, so the bottom of the roll opened up when trying to pick it up. No complaints on the Sushi and it was as good as the one other Sushi bar in town that is edible if not great.

For the entrees we went different routes. My wife had a Mongolian Beef sandwich. I thought it was ok, but my wife didn't care for it because it was impossible to eat as the sandwich it was presented as. It came with some very tasty (but COLD) fried Zucchini strips. The Sichuan Style Stir Fried Beef that I ordered was just ok.

Like I said, we'll return, Winchester very much needs this kind of restaurant. I only hope that they can work the kinks out and get it right. I certainly recommend others giving them a try and posting their thoughts. I hope I haven't turned anyone off, because this place deserves to get a chance to get it right.
