Tujague's Restaurant

SO MUCH FOOD. They are solely a pre-fix restaurant. I guess big-wigs and local politicians used to eat here back in the day. Very old, but with a classy feel to it, in the heart of the French Quarter. But for under $40 you get fresh bread, shrimp romulade, gumbo, brisket, your choice of entree (I had filet mignon, which was fantastic) and the best banana bread pudding I've ever eaten. Not bad if you want a slightly upscale tasting of New Orleans's food.

I've been here a few times and enjoyed it. It's noisy, but extremely child friendly, which is a plus. If you are tired of taking your kids to places like the Rainforest Cafe and Friendlys and don't mind paying a little extra, the place is great. Very warm feeling with upscale, unique cafe style food. There is even a little section walled off for those without kids. Beer and wine are served.

I had the special, which was spaghetti ragu with bolognese sauce and parmesan. So good. The husband had sweet italian sausage with roasted vegetables and polenta cake. Both were nicely portioned and very tasty. We finished it off by splitting a slice of their warm chocolate pudding cake. Not as good as I would have hoped, but it was still chocolaty and moist. I think next time I would try the fresh fruit crisp.

All of the food tasted fresh and came with warm crusty french bread.

I would go back, but probably only with kids or people with children. However, the indie rock soundtrack and the fact that you could color on the tables, though, didn't make those of us without kids feel out of place. :-)

I would actually give this restaurant 2.5 stars, but it doesn't seem tooallow me to do this. My general feeling about this place is the hype builds you up to much and when you get there, you will almost certainly feel slightly let down. My husband and I went last night for the first time after reading several decent articles on the place. We were excited to go, but kind of underwhelmed.

My husband said the beer was poured perfectly, so I think this is going to be another great addition to the Davis Sq. bar scene. We arrived 20 minutes prior to our reservation and were able to still be seated right away, which was a pleasant surprise. Strangely, at 6pm on a Saturday night, the place was filled with young children. Mind you, they were all really well-behaved, but not the upscale bar/restaurant feel you look for on date-night. Also, the tables for two were all really close together and hard to squeeze into - even for the thinnest of women. You felt like you were dining with your neighbors.

The food was ok. I liked the fact that they had their own filtered water and brought it to your table to pour yourself. The bread tasted fresh and had a wonderful rosemary flavor. The poutine was actually pretty good. The cheese curd and fries were the right flavor, texture, and consistency. However, the gravy was pretty salty. Overall, we enjoyed it.

For dinner, my hubby had the Shrimp Etouffee. Maybe we've been spoiled by many trips to New Orleans, but he felt the meal was lacking. The sauce was bland and the hush puppies were rock hard. He says it was ok, but left him mildly unsatisfied. It also had chili peppers in it, which you don't usually find in Etouffee.

I had the Spatzle, which I had been looking forward to. The nice thing about the menu is that it points out any allergens in the food. Also, for pregnant women or people with low immune systems, it points out anything unpasteurized or undercooked. The Spatzle was one of these dishes, but the chef was more than happy to substitute pasteurized Gruyere for the aged Comté. All and all it was decent. Very rich. Very nice ham and cheese flavor.  Some of the mushrooms didn't seem to fit and I am a big mushroom person. I also couldn't taste the hazelnut, but that was just me. It might have been the substitute cheese covering it up.

For desert, we split the apple cranberry crisp a la mode, which I have to admit was pretty good. Probably the best part of the meal. Very good granola like topping and the ice cream had a delicious vanilla flavor.

All and all the experience was decent. Again, if I had not read all the hype before hand, I may have enjoyed it more. I think I expected more. I don't know if I would go back for dinner. The people next to us had the beet salad and said it was wonderful. Another table had calamari and it looked and smelled great. I might go back to try those or another desert, but I am not sure I would go for a full meal out again. We'll see. I also heard the brunch is great, so maybe I will try again for that.

Do Re Mi is awesome the first few times you go or if you go occasionally in a group, but nothing compares to going to a live performance in a bar, in front of an audience. I mean it is fun - those afraid of performing in public will have the benefit of partying in a room full of only friends.

The pros are that it has free parking (but is not labeled and hard to find), it can be cheap, if you have enough people, and the weird videos are hysterical. Also, you don't have an annoying MC who only pics their friends songs over and over or hogs the mic themselves, and you can do more songs than the 1 to 2 they let you do in the bars.

The cons are that food and alcohol are not allowed, there is no real ventilation in the rooms (it gets warm and stinky very quickly), parking is hard to find, if the parking area is filled up, and it can be expensive for a small group (they charged my friends about $60 each for 3 hours - that's $120 for those keeping count).

Plus, as other people have mentioned, you get bootleggers who often can not hold their liquor. Nothing like your 15 year old cousin or that 19 year old co-ed smuggling in liquor for liquid courage and puking in the couch or hallway. I think if they served alcohol, like the LimeLight, they could better regulate that.

My dog has had to be rushed here twice in the 5 years I've had him - once for swallowing a chicken bone and once for tearing his eyelid. Both times, the staff and doctors were kind,  thorough, and honest. They really seemed to care about my pet and didn't seem out to charge us the highest price possible. In fact, they often came in under the estimate.

I am not going to lie - it's a pricey place. It is $147 just to walk through the door, but if you need a hospital that is close to 93/128 and open 24 hours with excellent care, this is a highly recommended place.

I saw the rock as a kid. Then I learned it's not even the exact spot where the pilgrims landed. And it had graffiti on it. And it smelled like pee. Needless to say, I was unimpressed and though it was free, felt kind of ripped off.

I've been to other real historic sites that blew me away and made me think. This...did not.

I now know what it is like to be an old married couple in their 60s having an early dinner on a Saturday night. The fireplace and 70s decor, the elevator music, the old people sitting near you...

The food is slightly pricey, but the atmosphere is relaxed and you get your money's worth. They have a nice, fresh salad bar, included with every entree order, which also has bread and cheese you can slice yourself. The fish entrees are all fresh tasting and delicious. The wait staff is nice and attentive, but doesn't rush you.

The only thing that irked me a little was the ala carte veggie choice. I asked for the veggie special as my side and was told I would have to get it separately - no substitutions. I ended up splitting a $4 place of squash with my husband. $4 seems like a lot for squash, especially, when it is in season and I didn't really want a starch as my side.

All and all it was the type of place you would take your parents for a nice family dinner. But I wouldn't take a first date here, if she doesn't receive AARP in the mail.

People rave about this place, and it is true, they know how to cook a burger so it is thick, juicy, and doesn't dry out. They also have about a thousand different types of burgers and you can get both fries and onion rings on the side. I've eaten there 4 times and all I've really gotten was stuffed. The burgers aren't bad. They are pretty good, but they just don't blow me away. I think my main problem, is when I get toppings, like cheese, I can barely taste them, and it is hard to handle the giant messy burger.

If you are hungry and have some time, do check it out. It's worth the trip for a good burger and beer. But, if you want your mind blown with a fantastic, flavorful burger and are really hungry NOW,  I would go elsewhere. The burgers take about 20-30 minutes to make.

Boston Burger Company

If Boston Burger Company was a man, I would be hooked for life. He would be the kind of man who is attractive and good in bed, but really, really bad for you. The kind of guy friends warn you about, but you can't stop thinking about him, when he's gone.

I had seen the place in Davis a few times, but it looked rather small and I never really heard much about it. But, yesterday, I had a steak fry craving that almost made me a homicidal mad woman. I needed a basic burger and good, thick fries. Boy, was I in heaven!

We ordered take out. I asked for the Boston Burger with cheese, ketchup, and mayo. Something simple, but damn was it huge and delicious. If I had a big stomach and didn't care about dying from obesity and heart failure, I would have eaten 4 more of them. After the burger, I really didn't have room for the fries, but I ate one and I couldn't stop until I had a handful more and felt sick from being stuffed. They were so thick and flavorful. A perfect fry! Did I mention they have like 10 different flavors of fries? I, also, had the Boston Baked Beans, which were good, but nothing to write home about. I ended up only having a bite of those to taste them. Was lucky they were included with my meal. I didn't try the homemade chips.

Can't wait to go back in the future and try their other items. Of course, I think I need to wait about a month, so I don't need to be carried around with a forklift.

My brother knows the chef and I live across the street from the restaurant, so I had no reason not to try it. We end up ordering from there way too much, as the food is inexpensive and excellent. The Pho is the best I've had in Boston -  my favorite being the beef ball soup. The Hawaiian fried rice is also a favorite and they do a great Pad Thai, as well as scallion pancake and tempura.

I've also had many other of the Thai items on the menu and they have never disappointed. The beef macadamia nut is so yummy! You can't beat Lady Siam for the value!
