I have to admit up front, I've never had their wings...and I love good wings. I went in there a couple of times - once for chicken tenders and once for a chicken cutlet sub. Both times the service was just meh and the food was ok. The last time I ate there was last week and the veggies on the sub tasted kind of like they had been sitting around for a while. The bun was good, as was the fresh deli cheese, but the chicken was very deep fried. Normally, I love fried chicken, but this wasn't crispy and flavorful on the outside and juicy on the inside, like I love my fried chicken. It just tasted very fried. Plus, they guy called me sir...and I'm a woman...a very feminine-looking woman. I would not go back.

My favorite upscale bar in the Boston-area. They always have an amazing soundtrack playing, I love the red and black leather decor. You feel like you've stepped into a fancy Mad Men party. The drinks are pricey but very creative, tasty, and strong. Been craving that Old Fashioned? They make it. Want a different take on your usual martini, named after an old film noir? They have it. Plus, you can't beat their 5-4-3-2-1 deal, Monday-Thursday, during happy hour. Their flatbread pizzas and warm chocolate cookies are soooo good. Plus, try the mac and cheese with tortilla chips! You won't regret it!

Just about my favorite restaurant in Boston. Love everything about it. The decor, the service, the food, the desserts, the drinks! They can take simple fish and make it into something extraordinary without frying it or smothering it in sauce. Their brunch is also something to savor.

A perfect Sunday is brunch here and then a slow walk through the SOWA Open Market.

Ole' Mexican Grill

The mere thought of this place makes me want to rip my face off in a tizzy of excitement. I first tasted their food at their sister stand across the street, Olecita, which has cheap and amazing soft-shell tacos. Especially the shrimp ones. I would always look across the street at Ole and think "I have to try that." All I have to say is BEST GUACAMOLE ever! They make it right at your table and it was so good, I took home the leftover with some additional salsa in a doggie bag. I then had their Chile Rellanjos (?Spellling?) which were simply amazing.

The price is a bit steep, but totally worth it. The decor is very Spanish and, on that note, they also have a "tapas" (small plates) menu for those looking to share a little something over a few drinks.

I am definitely going here for my next birthday!

I work across the street from this place and LOVE IT. I have yet to have anything bad there. The Veggie Quiche and Salads are phenomenal - very fresh with simple twists like Guyere Cheese, Sweet Potato, and Roasted Squash. If they happen to have the Key Lime Pie Bars on a day when you are there, YOU HAVE TO TRY THEM! Instead of meringue, they are smothered with toasted marshmallow! The English muffins are homemade and simply buttery and delicious. Moderately priced, with a modern European feel to it. Definitely worth it for a lunch or a simple mid-day treat!

I remembered this place being much better than it was, when I went years ago. I went last week to grab a sandwich on my way into work and was turned off by the cramped, outdated decor. Additionally, the place was FILLED, wall-to-wall with high school kids. I ordered the Gobbler sandwich and it took a while to make it. Then, it was just MEH. I asked for it with mayo on it and was given it on the side. Additionally, the stuffing was instant stuffing, and the lettuce and tomato weren't very fresh. Very cafeteria style. I am reluctant to try this place again.

Snake and Jake Christmas Club Lounge

I wish we had more bars like this in Boston. The only thing that I can think of that comes close is The Tam and even that doesn't compare the uniqueness of Snake and Jake's.  I first heard of this place from an old friend who lived in the area. He was passionate about dive bars and this was one of his old neighborhood hang outs.  Then I started hearing more and more from locals who went here and recommended it and even read about it in an offbeat guide book. When I mentioned I was going to a local bartender, he asked if I was from the area, I said no, and he was surprised as he didn't think anyone but locals knew about the place. He and others had said they had only been there drunk in the wee hours of the morning. This made the place more intruiging.

The first time I went was at 4 in the afternoon and it was closed. It's most definitely a late night place to either hit up after the bars have closed or after 7, before hitting up the rest of the Uptown area restaurants/hangouts. This late night schedule can be off putting to some, since it is on an out of the way, kind of dead, suburban end of Oak St. If you don't drive and walk there, it can make you kind of nervous; especially once you see it for the first time - it looks like someone's car port that has been covered over. I even heard it described by one local as "a place one would imagine a serial killer would take you to kill you." But, once you get inside it was one of those unique only-in-New Orleans experiences that keeps you coming back. It is dark, but really comfortable and totally cool. They even have a resident cat and dog. The drinks are cheap and the staff are friendly and really welcoming. It kind of reminds me of hanging out in a friend's basement or converted garage den during a low-key party. Great music, great drinks, comfy coaches, and a tv that shows the game. What more could you ask for? No pretention here at all. Just feels like you are hanging out with some really cool friends!

Try to get there between 7 and 10 on Thursday or Friday nights for the happy hour bbq... I haven't made it to that yet, but am dying to! I miss you Snake and Jake's!

The Painted Bird Tattoo & Body Piercing

5 star rating

I have 6 tattoos and the last two were done here. I happened to notice The Painted Bird because of its convenient location on Somerville Ave. I had taken the nose screw out of my nose one afternoon and couldn't get the new one in and was going from place to place in the Cambridge/Somerville area looking for a piercer to help me out as soon as possible, and they were more than happy to do so. So, when I wanted a small Fleur De Lis on my inner arm, I went there and the woman who tattooed me had exactly what I wanted. It was like she read my mind. Other shops wanted to make it huge or charge me a ton of money. This was exactly what I had envisioned at a great price. To this day, it is one of my favorites.

I was so happy with that experience that to get a bigger more elaborate tattoo, I quickly thought of them. Phil, a tattoo artist there since earlier this year, did a phenomenal job with a lotus flower sitting behind a tattoo I already had on my upper left arm. I came in on a Wed night, told him what I wanted, and he had something drawn up for me by my Sat appointment. He also not only made me really comfortable, but he also doesn't bullsh*t you. If something won't work or won't look good, he'll tell you right away. He will also give great suggestions of what will. I appreciated this, the fact that he seems to really care about his work and the quality of what you get, and not just making money. Plus, he not only does beautiful work, but he is incredibly detail-oriented. This makes for fantastic looking art. He suggested colors that really pop, and really worked down to every pollen stem and detail of every petal. Plus, he worked it so it looked like the new piece was part of my old tattoo and not just slapped on. It was also at a great, competitive price! I have a new favorite shop and a new favorite artist!

Because this place is out of the way (a small shop in a strip mall), I don't think it gets the attention that it deserves. Certainly not the same attention as its Medford sister shop or some of the other big names in the area, located on main streets or in busy malls. Here's hoping it does!

Total Skin Care II

 Update - 12/16/2009
I went back to Lisa, recently, for my first Brazillian wax. I am fair skinned and very sensitive to pain, so I was scared, but remembered what a breeze my eyebrow wax was with her. So, I went and Lisa was VERY patient. She made me feel incredibly comfortable and even though it did hurt, it was not the horrifying experience I expected it to be. In fact, I plan to go back again in 6 weeks! If you plan to get this very intimate procedure, Lisa is the best one for the job!

I, too, used a Group-on for my first ever facial with Lisa. I have very sensitive skin and always worried that a facial would make me break-out. Quite the opposite! On top of that, she gave me an awesome eyebrow wax that didn't even hurt and they ALWAYS hurt me!

Not only was Lisa very warm and friendly, she gave me great advice on how to treat my particular skin issues and my skin looks better than it has in ages two days later! I learned that a few of the drug store/department store products I was using either contained harsh ingredients or ingredients that clogged pores on certain types of skin. I was wondering why they weren't working. I thought it was me. I even purchased the special moisturizer they carry on the way out (which was the same price as the Clinique product I had been using, which wasn't helping)! And don't get me wrong, the products were not pushed on me. I did not feel coerced into another appointment or a sale. But it helped to be able to buy the products used during the treatment, after learning more about them, as they are all plant and mineral-based.

The whole experience both educational and extremely relaxing, and the Beacon Hill Athletic Center let me and my husband work out for free to try out the gym before my appointment! I now have hope for once for my problem skin!

Needless to say, I will definitely be putting money away to go back soon! Even if only for the waxing!

Exit Homequest Realty

 Update - 12/9/2009
I described in a previous review how EHR was the seller's agent on a short sale we were in the process of buying. As described, the agent on the listing was a nightmare to work with. Simply put, the deal fell through, and we lost a great deal of money. While a lot of people were at fault, the seller's agent displayed a lack of knowledge or eptitude when it came to closing a short sale.

Update: Sellers agent was supposed to send us back our initial good-faith deposit of $1,000, as agreed upon by us and the seller in a legal contract. Despite being clearly spelled out who it was supposed to go to, agent sent it to my lawyer made out to the seller. Agent's name is Bettina Small and working with her is simply put, a nightmare. Get a good lawyer if you decide to try working with her or you'll be in for a never ending headache.

Exit was the listing agent on a short sale we put in an offer for and almost purchased. The agent made the whole experience a nightmare. We waited 7 months for an approval to learn that she had let the bank talk her into only having limited email contact with them about the property. Additionally, we were led to believe that we had a firm approval, which ended up only being a verbal approval. The bank ended up canceling our closing at the last minute and upping their price by $15,000 after a second appraisal on a house that had sat empty for almost a year. In no way did I feel the agent was working aggressively to close this deal in a positive way, for herself or for the client. Needless to say, the deal fell through and we were out most of our rather sizable deposit. Plus, the house had structural problems that were undisclosed in the listing, but appeared to get worse to the eye as time went by. I would NEVER touch this company ever again.
