Having spent a considerable amount of time away from my beloved Los Angeles  recently a few things are desperately missed and constantly on my mind: Mexican Food, seedy dive bars, and most of all, my familiar music venues. The Roxy is at the top of that list. I posted a LA Venues list several years ago on Yelp, and The Roxy was left off that list, which turns out to be a good thing because I have only grown to love this place more in the past few years. This club and it's On The Rox club upstairs have been staples of my Sunset Strip experience and a neighborhood in LA that I associate so many great memories with. The Roxy is iconic. My dad and my uncles used to go to The Roxy back in the day, along with my cooler aunts. We are talking the lifeblood of Hollywood, people, and where to find "the party".

As far as music goes, they have the most diverse and well-balanced monthly calendars around. Period. The sound in this place is one of the best on either side of LA, west or eastside. I wish I could recall some of the old school shows I've sen here (pretty sure Incubus, Sublime and 311 are among those - don't judge me!) but I can't think past the ones I saw there just before leaving LA (Janes Addiction, X) because they trump any other band I could name anyway. The bar will set you back a bit, but not anymore than in other venues 'round the way, and besides it's part of the experience so who cares? The bathroom (I can only speak for the women's) is ridiculously rock-n-roll and I can only imagine what has gone on in there over the years.

And on top of all that, in the last few years, The Roxy has busted out a social media program so strong, it's been featured in some of the most popular media outlets in print, online and broadcast. They have started co-hosting Tweet Crawls several times a year, producing the Sunset Strip Music Festival and have single-handedly brought such an incredible sense of awareness of the Sunset Strip it's been reinvigorated to an entirely new generation of music lovers. They are the #1 music venue on Twitter with some of the best customer service follow through I have ever seen online. These sort of things are important to me on so many levels, mostly because it's my job to care.

If a tourist asked me how they should spend their one and only day in LA, I would tell them to spend it on the Strip, grab a drink at the Chateau Marmont, get your shop on, dinner at the Rainbow, and see a show at The Roxy, dammit. No better way to get your fill of LA flavor!

Shin Sen Gumi Yakitori

I've never felt so loved, accepted and well-fed in all of my life.

(Please don't repeat that to either of my grandmothers)

Some suggestions for your next visit to SSGY:

Bacon wrapped quail egg
Bacon wrapped tomatoes
Pork Belly (are you starting to see a pattern?)
Beef
Shrimp
Garlic

If you dare, just order the Omakase. You will be fully satisfied for under $25 per person, I promise (that's including beer).

PS - Don't even think about wearing your Listen Up hearing aid or else you might leave partially-to-completely deaf. The Japanese (especially those at Shin Sen Gumi Yakitori) are very enthusiastic about you patronizing their fine establishment.

PPS - Don't be rude, place your used skewers in the empty bamboo canister at your table.

Shin Sen Gumi Yakitori, love you, mean it. Now let's make out!

This place is just OK to me. Of course I prefer the skanky bars of Los Angeles so I just wasn't feeling it. Although they were playing Lady Sovereign when I walked in, always a good choice. The bar has a nice aesthetic and a great selection of vodkas. It was way too crowded, the doorman was a sensitive ass with not much of a sense of humor about things. I do like that this bar is off of the Sunset and Hollywood Blvd strip so parking is a bit easier. I went on a Tuesday night and it was packed, so I can't imagine what it is like on the weekends. I will probably give it another go but maybe get there a bit earlier to try and score a table.

This one goes out to the waiter with major 'tude last Thursday...

Word to the wise, my man. It would benefit you and the restaurant greatly if you would leave that diva attitude at home BEFORE you step foot in 15 ever again. Here is what I'm talkin' 'bout, Willis:

Aunny D: Excuse me, what exactly is a lobster roll?
Diva Waiter: (Rolls eyes) Umm...it's lobster...on a roll.

AD: OoooK, but what does it consist of?
DW: It's similar to chicken salad: mayo, lobster, etc.

AD: So it's lobster, nothing else, and a roll?
DW: Chicken salad. Same idea.

AD: OK, I'll have the Kobe beef burger instead.

Wow, thanks for the elaborate explanation of how you prepare your lobster salad, buddy. Lobster and mayonnaise sounds amazing! (I hope my sarcasm comes through when I type that). 15, sadly, you just lost a lot of my love because of Mr. Customer Service. If I ever step foot in there again, you better believe that I will request a different waiter, because I would have rather had the bussers wait on me last week, they at least were polite.

I'm in love with the number 15. Wow, that was reminiscent of Sesame Street wasn't it?

This is quite possibly the greatest concept known to man: high quality food, lovely presentation, and smaller portions to keep the prices low. How low you might ask? Well, $15, of course. In a country where the food portions doled out in restaurants are redunkulous, I wish that more restaurants would adapt this as their concept because so much food is wasted on a daily basis. The restaurant '15' in Echo Park is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood; it is an unassuming building with low-key decor, and a very friendly staff. It's a small restaurant with a lotta heart, and emits that good ol' fashioned neighborhood bar/restaurant feel. They also have an outdoor smoking area out back where you can sip on a cocktail and get your smoke on. Between the hours of 5 - 6:30pm, 15 offers a prix fix 3 course meal for $15, however we arrived around 6:45pm and they still allowed us to order off of the 15/15 menu anyway. I ordered the 15 mac-n-cheese for my first course and was really impressed with this signature dish. My main entree was the parpadelle pasta with wild mushroom ragout (Yum!) and to finish it off, it was chef's choice for desert, which happened to be bread pudding. I'm usually not a fan of bread pudding but this stuff was gooooood. After our meal I was totally satisfied and full, but not roll me out the front door full. They also have a very interesting menu of specialty cocktails from their full bar. My personal favorite was the Guavamojito, and my friend enjoyed the Citron my Face. She enjoyed the drink and I enjoyed hearing her order that from our waiter. I can't wait for the next show at the Echo, because you better believe that I will be going to 15 beforehand!

The City of Los Angeles

#400 - An ode to the City of Angels

A lot of people have a love/hate relationship with Los Angeles.

Me? It's all L.O.V.E.

Yes, LA is a 'her' -- a city with so many conflicting personalities all wrapped up into 500 square miles of concrete, fog and sunshine can only be compared to a woman. I was born and raised in this city, and have moved away only to come back to what I know and love. I grew up  in the South Bay, spent a lot of time between Exposition Park and Mid-Wilshire as a kid, caroused the beaches at Zuma, Venice, Hermosa and Redondo, was exposed to a little racetrack in Inglewood at a very early age and have fond memories of San Pedro and Long Beach as well. As an adult I lived in a number of apartments all over the city, seen more clubs turnover than Paris Hilton goes through boyfriends and have had the pleasure of befriending transplants all over the city. Over the years, friends have grown tired of LA and have moved on: Seattle, Boston, NYC, Las Vegas, San Francisco and Kansas (Yes. Kansas). People like to complain about how polluted the city is, about the number of cars on the road, the "fake" factor that Hollywood attracts, but at the end of the day, I still think that LA is the greatest city in the US. I mean, c'mon, there are no hurricanes here. Hello!!!! I've visited New York more times than I can remember, lived in Seattle for a time, and have been lucky enough to travel quite a bit throughout the states and although my fear of flying has gotten worse over the years, I always experience a certain peace as I sit on my return flight knowing that I will be home soon. I love this town. It has been good to me, and I'm proud to call myself an Angelino.

George's Greek Cafe

You gotta love a place that serves coffee so strong it looks like mud. Coming from a girl who loves her French press, Turkish coffee and anything else that resembles compost, that's a compliment. :)

I went to George's the other night for a wedding rehearsal dinner. This is a quaint little Greek restaurant located on the busy stretch of 2nd street in Long Beach, specifically Belmont Shore. I have to admit that I can't say that I'm qualified to accurately distinguish between what is authentic Greek cuisine and what is not. Although, I have said it before and I will say it again, I know what i like. And I like: kalamata olives, feta cheese, baklava, falafel, gyros, and muddy coffee. All of these things are Greek to me (every pun intended). I enjoyed the food at George's (I ordered the Greek salad with gyro, the Greek coffee and yummy custard dessert), the service was great - fantastic even. If you happen to be in the neighborhood I would recommend this place for a casual date, family dinner or a lunch spot.

I never thought that I would say this, but I'm starting to loose my love for Katsuya a lil' bit. Got major attitude from the host and hostess' during my recent trip. The drinks, albeit some of my favorite martinis in all of LA, are still riDUNKulously expensive. The food seems to be slipping a bit in my mind. This might be because I have now experienced Sushi Samba's omakase and will forever be comparing every Asian themed chain restaurant to them. Damn you Sushi Samba! Damn you!

I like the places in LA that make LA feel like NYC. Is that weird? I have been waiting for Katsuya Hollywood to open since the first day I saw the big plywood barricade up against the office building on Hollywood and Vine right down the street from Dean Martin's star and the Frolic Room. I mean how much better can this town get when Phillipe Starck's Japanese-inspired creation finds a new audience next to the Vine Metro station just two doors down from the Head shop on Hollywood Blvd and a block up from the Pantages? Los Angeles hasn't quite arrived as the metropolis it was once meant to be, but we are getting there.

Now I have to say that I didn't not eat at Katsuya tonight but I did try several of their specialty cocktails with a few friends. I believe my first drink was called the Katsuya Fresh? It was a blend of cucumber infused sake, effen vodka and a splash of citrus. The favorite drink of the night, however, was a toss up between the snappea martini and the heavenly kiwi drink (can't quite remember the name, it was that good) but all it takes is one look at the drink menu to spot the elderflower / kiwi goodness that was that drink. The decor is magical. The ambiance is divine. Yes, I said divine. The price point is expensive but that is to be expected. This is a brand new restaurant so the wait staff is on their best behavior but I have a feeling that this will be a constant. I can't wait to go back for dinner as I can only imagine that my four stars will turn into a five star review. To be continued...

Tere's Mexican Grill

They had me at "homemade tortillas" posted on the sign in the window.

I have been wanting to check out Tere's for a minute now. Today, I ordered a machaca burrito, chips and salsa and a Mexican coke (must remember to bring my flask next time). I have to say that the chips, made from the homemade tortillas were some of the best I have ever tasted and their salsa was also on point. I can't wait to go back and try more things off of the menu. I hear the fish tacos are good.

The restaurant is casual dining, no waiter service and the parking lot sucks, but there is street parking to be found close by. They do, however, accept credit cards which is a huge bonus.

4100 Bar

Category: Lounges
Neighborhood: Silver Lake

1.0 star rating
8/25/2008
After Sunset Junction a few friends and I ended up at the 4100 Bar, a place that I refer to as my old "hook up" bar (I'm absolutely certain that I am NOT the only one you calls it this). The type of place where me and my friends made lots of bad decisions, if you know what I mean. It's a dimly lit bar in hipsterville, they have a full bar (including Stella on tap), have lots of sitting and standing room, a jukebox, and it's one of the few late night spots in Silverlake.

So after several years of going here, I have still not written a review. Why you may ask? Well, In my eyes, there is nothing really exceptional about this spot. I have never had an experience where I have left and thought, 'Wow, that was amazing. I MUST share the good news that is 4100' and quite honestly haven't been able to decide what star rating I would give them for that reason. I have usually left thinking, why do I go back to that place again and again. And then I remember that it is never my suggestion to do so.

So that brings me back to my most recent experience. After a long day at the Sunset Junction street festival, 4100 is still open so my friend decides we need more to drink (first mistake). Second mistake is attempting, yet again, to utilize the women's restroom at the 4100. Upon walking in to the bathroom, my main concern was the sign that read:

"PLEASE DO NOT PUT TOILET PAPER IN THE TOILET. IT WILL CLOG."

Ummmm....OK.

What. The. F*ck.

Aren't toilets designed for the purposes of disposing of toilet paper? I understand that this is a busy weekend, but this is not just because of Sunset Junction, I know this to be fact. This has been the case EVER SINGLE TIME I have used the bathroom at the 4100 Bar. I couldn't even bear to walk into the stall the first time so I used the men's bathroom instead. This was purely out of desperation, not because it was leaps and bounds cleaner, trust me when I say that it was not.

The moral of the story is: If you must, go to 4100 for the drinks and a potential hook up, but be wary when it comes to using the ladies bathroom for that hook up. It's a doozy, and by "doozy" I mean f*cking disgusting.

Tiki-Ti Cocktail Lounge

Category: Lounges

5.0 star rating
8/22/2008
For the record, Tiki Ti is much more fun at 4pm as opposed to late night when you're crammed in there like a sardine, next to an a-hole with a cigarette in your face and it is near impossible to get a drink. I'm glad I haven't reviewed this place before now because it would have had a very different tone to it. Yet after my recent trip to the Tiki Ti I am convinced that 4pm is probably the greatest time of the day to start your happy hour circuit because you are able to hit up a few different spots and still be in bed by Midnight. Score!

My drink of choice at the Tiki Ti has been the Skull & Bones, mostly because I feel like such a bad ass when ordering that drink, but also because it has both light and dark rum and plenty of lime juice. However, I realized yesterday that I may have discovered what is confirmed (by me and others) to be the BEST BLOODY MARY IN ALL OF LOS ANGELES. Yes, there it is, folks. I said it. And I'm sticking to it. My only sadness is that Tiki Ti is NOT open on Sundays and I equate bloody marys with Sunday Funday. Oh well, this just means that I will have to spend more Saturday nights at the Tiki Ti past Midnight so that I have my early morning fix before sunrise on Sunday.

I think this place is brilliant. Strong mixed drinks, and a menu that you have to study as if you were studying for the SATs. The bartenders are pleasant and more than patient considering almost every person I saw walk up to the bar while I was sitting there had multiple questions about what ingredients were in their extensive lists of mixed drinks. There are rum, tequila, vodka and mixed liqueur drinks to choose from and the greatest part is that the bartenders will make recommendations for you based on your normal poison and what you normally drink. I ordered the Skull & Bones to start, which was followed by what I think was called the Screaming Tiki (Cazadores, lime juice and Squirt) all of which was totally forgotten after I consumed the aforementioned Bloody Tiki (bloody mary). If you're a fan of bloody marys, do yourself a favor, drive down to the Tiki Ti post up at the bar and enjoy the relaxed, laid back vibe of an island bar in our very own backyard of LA. It's like a little vacation from the rest of the world, without having to leave town.
