Mountain Yoga & Massage

This is a small studio in a nice sunny location.  Many of Oakland's best-known, best-loved yoga teachers have classes here, including several from Piedmont Yoga, so it's a great way to get instruction from them in a more intimate environment.

That said, this is a great beginners' place, too with a lot of personal attention.  (That's a good thing!  Don't be shy!)  I took my first classes from the Studio Director, Ann Dyer, and I never felt embarrassed or uncomfortable, though I had ample opportunity.

Ann also has a unique vision for moving the studio beyond just classes and into the art & culture of yoga generally.  Definitely check out their calendar for all the events and workshops they bring in.

On a practical basis, you should plan to arrive and leave in your class clothes.  There is not a lot of space for changing.

Mountain Yoga also offers massage, ayurveda and acupuncture.

The two brothers behind Supreme Indoor showed up quickly after being called, worked hard and fast to correct the problem, came back quickly & repeatedly when the problem wasn't solved and were generally great to work with.  The labor pricing was reasonable and they worked only worked through inexpensive solutions before arriving (sadly) at the conclusion that it was going to cost more.

Through it all, they were trustworthy, diligent and pleasant.  That's the best you can hope for because - let's face it - nobody is happy about having to spend big dollars on something so unsexy as furnace repair.

With the explosion in hugely expensive artisan cup-by-cup coffee lately, Cole Coffee still stands tall as having a mindboggling array of coffees available on demand, good prices on beans & cups, and a lively, fun hangout scene in the seating outside.

Plan to sit outside, take your time with a friend or a good book, and be accosted by the many local dogs brought along with their owners.  For the good of its culture and to the detriment of folks that would want to spend all day, there is no wi-fi.

This is a great holdover-from-back-in-the-Bezerkeley-days Berkeley business.  Not only do they have a great selection of every kind of jewelry imaginable (by me) from simple to gaudy at reasonable prices, but a full bar (sssshhhhh), baked treats, and a great rock-n-roll photography display.  I wish they would make me wait more so I could go through their great section of collectible rock (music) books they leave out.  Be sure also to ask them about their elaborate annual Burning Man setup.  They are dog-friendly, too.

My wife and I bought both our bands here and have absolutely no regrets.  They even cut us a deal and continue to do cleaning & maintenance on both our rings cheerfully and quickly.   A-1.

Great jukebox, spacious room, fantastic location, nice pool tables.  Despite all it has going for it, this place is DEE-PRESS-ING. Recommended for when you absolutely, positively just want to get sht-faced drunk.  Or you need somewhere to go after the Raiders game.

Dry cleaners in Oakland are crazy expensive.  This is the place I've found that has the least crazy prices.  Shirts are just $.99 if you combine with a dry cleaning order.  Their default for 'when do you want it back' is tomorrow, which is great because most of the places in my neighborhood are pricier and take longer.  Bad combo.

Never had a problem here with cleaning or lost items.
Longest hours around I can find.
Easy parking, but don't forget to feed that meter.  Oakland's government is hungry,

Heart and Dagger Saloon

Oh my god, did Oakland need a place like this!  As a relatively recent move-in from San Francisco, I've desperately missed some of the City's great dive-y dog-friendly hangs.  Imagine Zeitgeist without crowds, Lucky Thirteen with fewer posers and nicer back patio, 500 Club without an overpoweringly loud jukebox... That's Heart & Dagger.

The bartenders are good (though I've never seen anyone order a mixed drink here; this is a beer & shot kinda place), there's a good selection of pinball and a great sunny back patio.  Blessedly near all kinds of solid fast food options, like Lanesplitter Pizza, Arizemendi, Burrito Store, Trader Joe's and - yes- Subway.  Not as noisy or posey as Easy Lounge.  All good!  Just don't expect the sound up on the TV for sports.

It's just this simple: if you want the best selection of magazines and journals around, this is the place.  From mass-market to indies to UK/Europe's snazziest mags, they've got 'em.  Their Twitter feed at "issuesshop" will keep you updated on what's come into stock.

For vinyl junkies, this might be your best shot in Oakland for that recently reissued 180g jazz funk classic obscurity you've had your eye on.

Dog-friendly, too.

This is one of my favorite places to go when it's nice out.  The outdoor courtyard area is pleasant and dog-friendly and the menu has a nice variety of standards for brunch & lunch as well as good daily specials.

Don't be in a rush when you come here, though.  Every time I've come - even at times where there were few other customers - I had to wait what seemed like an unusually long time for a short order place.  But if you're there for the sunny courtyard on a nice day, not the point, right?

Shimmering Resumes

Category: Career Counseling

5.0 star rating

If you're at all thinking of renewing your 'personal brand' for the job market, Shimmering Resumes is a great place to start.  My job hunt was getting looong and it was time to kick it up a notch.  As a marketer between gigs and a decent writer, I thought I could put together a pretty good resume myself - but the proof was in the pudding.  Not many calls, not much interest.

Paul took my tired resume and breathed new life into it.  It's not just a design thing; he sits you down and quizzes you through your  career to draw out and wordsmith your best qualities & experiences - and even possibly find some you had skipped over.

Best of all is the feeling you get from having a new resume that puts your best foot forward.  It's like getting a jolt of confidence, a reminder that "Hey that experience was pretty strong!"  Now I'm off to get some employers to agree!
