Here is another cute, little neighborhood store amongst the nail salons, restos and bars lining the rather sketchy Polk Gulch (Polk Street South of Broadway). If you have your head phones on and are texting on your smartphone, you might actually miss it. That would be sad.

What you'll find there:  Really cute, versatile pieces to construct a comfy outfit for both work and play.  The designers that you find are not bargain basement, but not UBER expensive like shops in Union Square or the Marina.  It is what I would consider as reasonable fashion.

What you won't find there:  Overly attentive, uber excitable staff. The atmosphere is more "do it yourself" than other stores.  The ladies working there are not extremely talkative (in my opinion), but are friendly enough.  They are not racing around trying to cater to your every whim.  Yet, they will say hello, they will ask you if you would like to start a dressing room and they will give you enough space to browse and will answer questions if you have them.

What I purchased and my experience:  I bought several very romantic and flowy dresses (one with lace and the other ruffles) each for less than $80.  I wore one to a holiday cocktail party (and got rave reviews) and the other, I plan to wear at work with a leather belt purchased from Picnic.  Actually, now that I think of it, I think that the style reminds me of something casual enough to Urban Picnic in...English Country...a little shabby chic.

Other things to note:  They also carry other great fashion accessories (saw that they sell the NUBRA - for all your strapless dress needs) and I also bought an AWESOME messenger bag from Danica Studios.

In the past it has been rather hit or miss for me, but recently my adventures have been more hits than misses.

I love this historic Columbus street building. When I think of my first weekends in SF in 2003, I thik of the building that houses Cafe Zoetrope.  The fact that Francis Ford Coppola owns it, makes it that much cooler.

Yet, what I really appreciate here (like I appreciate almost everywhere) is GREAT service and solid food.

The thin crust pizza (whatever flavour) is tah die for.  Also, I really appreciate a restaurant that provides pasta cooked AL DENTE.

The wine selection is ok, but it's the food and the atmosphere that I really go there for.

Wow...I forgot how much I liked this place until tonight.  The memories of drunken revelry flood back.

The atmosphere is laid back.  This is a great neighborhood hangout.

The drinks are strong, the bartenders nice and while I love their Irish Coffees, I substituted it with Frangelico...which, I guess makes it more of an Italian Coffee than an Irish one.

Love, love, love!

I'm a busy, single career woman, who works LONG hours and I don't want to spend the very small amount of free time that I have at the washing machine and dryer (much less cleaning the apartment - I need a really good recommendation for maid service, BTW).  I really want to maintain some semblance of life that doesn't involve being Cinderella during my "off time"..   This year,  I felt overworked and overwhelmed and my 8 weeks + worth of dirty laundry wasn't aiding the situation.

THANK GOODNESS that an acquaintance actually recommended Laundry Locker to me.  The service has been consistently good and the process of registering and choosing HOW you want your laundry done is very simple.  The rates are clearly listed on the website, as well as the really easy step-by-step instructions on how to use the service:

First you GO ONLINE and register.  Read the instructions carefully.

    1. Drop Off - your clothes in a locker at any of their SECURE drop off locations

    2. Place Your Order - on line (and some lockers, you can do it via TEXT messasge)

    3. Get Notified - when they pick up your order, process your order and RETURN your clean items within the SAME locker that you dropped it off in

    4. Pick Up - you go there and pick up your clean, folded laundry. (in most cases the next day, depending upon the time that you dropped off the dirty laundry)

If you have ANY questions, customer service IS UBER responsive (I've contacted them before about items that I left in a locker that I failed to log online b/c I was in such a rush before a major business trip - they got back to me w/in a couple of hours via email)

Upon return of your first order, you get a laundry locker bag with your identification tag on it.  This is what you use to drop off your laundry with future orders.

They do fluff and fold and charge by the pound.    They offer monthly laundry plans based upon usage, which can lower the per pound price, but it is NOT required that you enroll into a plan (the price w/o a plan is $1.49/pound). I am not currently enrolled in a plan, but probably will enroll next month.

They also do DRY cleaning (see the website for rates and instructions on drop-off)

My clothes come back clean and folded and I save HOURS by using this service.  I also spent the SAME amt as I would using my apartment bldg's washer and dryer (~$40) .  LOVE IT!

I've dropped in here for both dinner and breakfast and while the food is decent, there really isn't anything remarkable about this place, except that it is an UPDATED, metallic, shiny neighborhood diner, which replaced a more hole-in-the-wall greasy-spoon diner that used to reside there (which was MUCH cheaper by the way).

The price tag is way too expensive for the quality of food, but if you're looking for a joint that serves breakfast fare all day...well, this is your place.

WERKout!

I'm a busy single, city girl.  I try to fit in the gym, when I can, but often with my work hours and my social schedule, it's a task.  After running a half-marathon in JULY with improper training, I found myself injured and falling into a vicious cycle of being UNMOTIVATED, even after a visit to my VERY expensive Sports Medicine M.D.

Once again,  TA-DAH, AEMAR came to my rescue!  I met Aemar in 2010 and I've sporadically used his services when he worked for another company.  Yet, I followed him b/c  his instruction style appeals to me.   For someone, who needs a little motivation and encouragement to make every last fitness second count, I look towards Aemar.   What I love about him is that he is REAL.   He understands that not all of his students follow a perfect diet and that some enjoy drinks during HH and he is willing to help you to obtain your fitness goals in a real way and not what I consider a "test tube" fitness environment.

Like with anything, you won't see IMMEDIATE results, but if you stick with him you will see them.  For instance, he looked over the exercises that my Sports Medicine M.D. gave to me and he incorporated those into my personal studio WERKout.  After 4 weeks (2x a week), I've noticed that the leg muscles are stronger and I can use the elliptical again without pain.

In the past, I've attended both his bootcamp sessions (which I enjoy) and after I was injured, I began utilizing his more personalized 1:1 studio TRX classes to re-hab my knee.  I recommend either type of setting.  There are also group discounts available for studio classes.

WERKout SF Bootcamp 6 weeks for $180.

Locations: Dolores Park, Castro, Embarcadero and SOMA

Personal Training $400 for 4 sessions Intro clients
Aemar's WERKout specialty's includes TRX,Endurance, Core and Balance.

His WERKout programs are personalized to challenge your body needs and has a twist of p90x or crossfit .  The WERKout home studio is located near Dolores park and parking is pretty easy and there is access to public transportation (both via MUNI and 16th and Mission BART 3 blocks away).   It is close to both GOLD's gym and 24 hour fitness, as well.

I can't say enough about Aemar.  He's funny, he's energetic & he is professional.

I did a quick scan of reviews prior to picking this place out, but what I so OBVIOUSLY missed was that farm:table is literally cubby hole sized with literally ONE farm-table for people to sit around and nosh.

Some quick points:

LIMITED indoor seating around a farm style table.
LIMITED outdoor, side-walk cafe table seating (2 small round tables, to be exact) - NON HEATED
Cash Only
Coffee is eh.
Menu is LIMITED

What we ordered:  braised pulled pork shoulder
What wasn't to be expected: the made to order food was cold, the side of toast was pre-buttered, the veggies, soggy.

The cost was actually more than I had expected.  I'd say moderate.

It was ok, but not remarkable.  Left a little disappointed.

Arang Restaurant

After several failed attempts in the past 2 years, I FINALLY made it out to Arang.  Was it worth the wait?  Well, I think so and here are some reasons why:

1) Plenty of menu choices
2) Service is efficient and friendly
3) The food is good.

What I ordered:
Dol sot bi bim bap (recommend)
Beef Kalbi (recommend)
Pot Stickers (eh)

What to expect:
1) Small dining space
2) Can get hot and stuffy
3) Quick service
4) Moderately priced  - 2 people, 4 dishes, 2 sodas=$50 (sans tip)

I'm just glad that I have a Korean resto closer my apt (my fave one is on Geary and 10th Ave, which is sorta far).

Cafe Murano

Ok.  I cheated today.  Not on my boyfriend (I'm so very sadly single *sniff* *sniff*) and not on my diet (because, really, I'm not going on a diet), but on my favorite neighborhood cafe (Cinque Terre Cafe).  Shhh... don't tell.

Well, you can tell b/c it isn't really that bad.  I think that Georges, the owner of 5T is also part owner of Cafe Murano.  So, it's not really cheating.

I still love my neighborhood place b/c there is MORE room to spread out, but Cafe Murano is a little hidden gem (which apparently is not that hidden judging from the reviews here on yelp and the constant stream of people into and out of the cafe).

The price point is moderate. The PANINI that I odered (PARMA) was AMAZEBALLS (yes, I used AMAZEBALLS in a sentence).  The sundried tomato and melted cheese just whispered words of love to my stomach.

The double MOCHA that I ordered was DRIZZLED in chocolate syrup.  Ah...HEART MELT.

I spent $10.  Which may be a bit much for someone on a budget.  So, this might be a SPLURGE place once and a while, but so yummy... *yum*.

The crowd was a mix of young and old...working and students... try it out!

I'm not sure if they accept credit cards.  They have an ATM inside, if you need it.  Plus, they are only a block away from a BOA right across from SUNDANCE Kabuki in Japantown.

City CarShare

Category: Car Rental
Neighborhoods: Civic Center/Tenderloin, SOMA

4.0 star rating

Convenience for "city folk" who don't have autos.

Why I recommend it:
1) Believe it or not, if you are running errands across town for an hour or two, it is CHEAPER than a taxi (daytime rates range, I've seen $6.50/hour - although, I see that rates will be going up).

2) If you are purchasing lots of items or HEAVY items (e.g. groceries, pet food, furniture...), you don't have to try to lug it around on MUNI or BART.

3) They link payment to the credit or debit card and you pay on a MONTHLY basis (helps you when you BUDGET)

4) You can track expenses spent on transportation.

5) You don't have to bother friends for rides. Provide you with a sense of  CONTROL (maybe, all in your own head) and flexibility

6) Your fees cover insurance.  (although, I have my own) and maintenance of their cars (coolio)

7) Rental " PODS" all over the place - you can find a city car

THE CATCH:
1) I purchased a deal on GROUPON (there are probably many such deals on other cost-saving sites), that gave me a 6-month membership at $30 with a $30 rental credit.  So, I don't know the true cost of utilizing the service outside of my deal, yet.

2) This is the only carshare type of program that I've utilized, I didn't do much research on the subject.  So, I have no idea about zipcar or other services.  I'm a little transporation naive.

3) READ the FINE PRINT, as there are many plans to choose from at many rates.

4) The rental cost factors in the HOURLY rate AND a mileage rate.  So, if you are going LONG distances or are renting for a LONG period of time, it may be more cost effective to use a RENTAL CAR.

5) Other means of transportation are obviously cheaper (public) and not as convenient, so if you are really on a tight budget, this probably won't work for you.

6) I haven't encountered a problem, yet.  I've only used this for less than a month.  So, I might have to update this review, if I find any issues along the way.
