The first thing we had to deal with here was a line at the front desk that rivaled check in on a Friday afternoon in Vegas. What the heck was going on here? I guess they got us through fast enough. We had left bags with the bellhop, and after the 15 minute estimate became 40 in reality, we had to call back down again to remind them we were still here. The room itself was okay. We were supposedly in one of the remodeled ones. It had a funky art deco design. The TV was outdated, and there was no wireless internet, just a super short ethernet cable and a $15 fee. Luckily I've stayed in enough places to know to bring a long cable with me. Otherwise the stay was alright. I can't say I'd ever make it a point to stay there again, but I have also definitely stayed at worse places. The staff was friendly.

Had a pretty awesome breakfast burrito wrap thingy with eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, cheese, salsa, and sour cream. The white chocolate mocha I washed it down with was also pretty fantastic. Brenda was our server and she was efficient, nice, and her art rocks.

Watered down orange juice. Disgusting.
A good Italian sandwich for a reasonable price. They went a little nuts on the lettuce, but that was easily dealt with. If you're in the market for a freshly sliced deli sandwich and happen to be in Palatine, this place should be visited.
Here are my notes on our 3 night stay at the lodge:
* CHARGING FOR INTERNET USAGE PER NIGHT IS SUPER LAME, ESPECIALLY IF IT'S NOT A DOWNTOWN HOTEL.
* Beds are poorly made up. A flat sheet covers the mattress, it's not big enough to tuck completely around and was all sorts of messed up by the first night. The duvet had no cover, and was simply sandwiched between two flat sheets. The whole thing seemed a little cheap to me, considering the rest of the room was pretty nice.
* Staff was super courteous and attentive.
* Hotel is really poorly laid out. The signage is almost hidden, and the whole place is essentially one big maze.
* For being the McDonald's hotel there was no quarter pounder on the room service menu. Lame.

Coalfire Pizza

I've decided I pretty much love this pizza. Too bad I found it so close to our move out of Chicago, but I may have to make a few return trips when we are back in 2010.

Pretty damn good. I can't say I have any major complaints. The help was a little skittish and off in their estimations on how appropriate their portions would be for three people (no, you don't need two pizzas), but if you like thin crust pizzas I would definitely give it a try. Expect a little burnt crust edges, that's a normal thing for them.

Wednesday night seemed the perfect time to visit this place. Not too busy, but the service was still good. Pasta dishes were all good, ample sized portion as well. I don't have really anything bad to say, except that something had been wiped down with a dirty towel as that "wet towel" odor was apparent despite how good the food smelled around us. If you are in the mood for a big dish of pasta, this one is a good choice.

Well perhaps it was a mistake coming off of my Bumblekiss high to eat here for breakfast the next day. I was on such a French toast kick that I decided to order their "Santa Fe" take on it. Essentially it was a large baguette encrusted in corn flakes. When it comes out it doesn't exactly scream French toast in appearance, but it was good. It was however nowhere near what I experienced over at Bumblekiss. I also had eggs (decent), bacon (good), and potatoes (also good). Over all it was all a fine breakfast. The downsides to the cafe were a so-so atmosphere, and the menu seemed a bit overpriced. Service was good...

Okay forget everything. Forget the kitch, the bright colors, the tiny space, the friendly service, the large menu.

It's a cinnamon roll, DIPPED IN FRENCH TOAST BATTER!!!! WTH? Seriously it is like the most delicious thing ever. The entire rest of the meal could have sucked and I would have given it 5 stars based on that. But as far as the rest of the meal:
scrambled eggs - not bad
potatoes - a little too oily for me
chicken sausage - good
rye toast - so so
pancake - I didn't sample but the wife enjoyed
bacon - peppery and dry, just the way I love it
AND I had a sparkling Martinelli's to wash it down. Perfect.

This latest trip to Portland consisted of us getting sick and basically turning our room into a hospital ward. Despite the fact that the TV was prehistoric, and one night we were treated to the hot moans of sex from the guests next door this place is pretty decent. Beds aren't bad either.
