NO NO NOOOOOOOOOO !
For reasons beyond their control, they are no longer able to carry the croissants.
Oh well, it's still a 4 star kind of place to hang out. Sometimes I eat dinner there when I haven't gone grocery shopping. Nom.
Pretty much all of the coffee shops I like have an atmosphere like Modern Times - laid back, with a mixture of people studying/working hard and people who feel free to talk anyway.
But Modern Times has a special distinction -- CROISSANTS! ZOMG they are so good. I only ever got off my lazy butt to come check out the place because my professor, who taught me in Philly but is resident in DC, basically had a foodgasm every time she brought up Politics and Prose and the croissants that Modern Times serves. Well -- what can I say -- after my first croissant here, I had a foodgasm too. IT TASTES LIKE A WHOLE STICK OF BUTTER IT IS SO GOOD. I think they're fresh-baked every day, and while it wasn't served to me still-warm as I had hoped, the outsides are all flaky, but the insides melt in your foodgasming mouth because of the butter. FUCK YEAH! But after my first taste of the plain croissant, I ran into my professor at Modern Times who suggested trying the chocolate one. It was even better! Even though the chocolate doesn't taste much like chocolate (I go for the extra-bitter stuff) but the mouthfeel is amazing -- it injects an additional layer of sugary melty-chocolate sensation into the soft, full-stick of butter feel. Holy crap it is so good.
They could use upholstered furniture. But I guess my ass is squishy enough from the chocolate croissants that I don't really need extra cushioning.

Yelping SinceJanuary 2009
Things I Love My Blog Or Website When I'm Not Yelping...workworkwork. actually, i supposed to do that when i'm yelping too.
Why You Should Read My ReviewsI will eat anything or anywhere at least once.
I used to come here EVERY single weekend my freshman year of college. I'm several years out of college but come back here fondly whenever I visit Pittsburgh. It's been almost ten years since I started going to this restaurant, and amazingly, the prices have only risen by a quarter (as in, 25 cents, not 25 percent) or so since I was a wee college freshman. Inexpensive with wonderful service - I only wish they had a place like this in Philadelphia!
