The crepes here are really lovely - well-portioned - and come with a classic side salad. The ambience here is unique - it feels like a well-furnished, cozy cave, rather than sitting in a Starbucks (which unfortunately is what the Craig Street location feels like!) It's very popular, but classy enough to bring a Sunday brunch date to.

I used to come here EVERY single weekend my freshman year of college. I'm several years out of college but come back here fondly whenever I visit Pittsburgh. It's been almost ten years since I started going to this restaurant, and amazingly, the prices have only risen by a quarter (as in, 25 cents, not 25 percent) or so since I was a wee college freshman. Inexpensive with wonderful service - I only wish they had a place like this in Philadelphia!

One of the best *casual* sushi places I've eaten in the greater Boston area - if not the best. Cheap and fun with an extensive menu and quick service.  I also like that you can get non-sushi, good-quality rice dishes. Also, the green ice cream tempura here is pretty much the best value I've ever seen for ice cream tempura. And very yummy. :)

Yum yum yum. You know how fusion restaurants invariably end up turning Asian food into Caucasian friendly mish mash? This isn't really a fusion restaurant, but they have choice Hong Kong, Korean, and Japanese plates that is much more like comfort food for Asian people. I think the Korean and Japanese food isn't that authentic at all and more Hong Kong-ified, but since I grew up in a Cantonese household, it doesn't really bother me. Of course, I also love the shaved ice and the egg waffles. They also have classic Hong Kong food, like the macaroni and ham in broth, and a toast plate.

Sidenote (mostly not serious): it rubs me the wrong way that another reviewer writes without any qualification that the restaurant is Korean owned and the egg waffles are Korean. cuz, you know, it touches that nerve in me that gets irritated when people just wrongly assume about Asian ethnicities. Those folks are speaking Cantonese and clearly serve Hong Kong classics that people who are not from Hong Kong would never think to offer. I love Korean food and Korean people but don't try to steal glory of the egg waffles from Hong Kong ok???

This place is okay for a hotel restaurant. They very recently overhauled the menu to put an emphasis on local ingredients, and I think they're still fine-tuning the new menu. My friend and I got bruschetta, which was bad (good tomatoes, but drowning soggy crappy bread) and we both decided to get the arugula salad, which came with brie toast, mushrooms, and a sh*t-ton of bacon. OMG, it was a lot of bacon. So much so that they should really just rename it bacon salad with arugula. I loved the bacon (who doesn't) but also felt like my attempt to eat healthy was undercut by it. Oh well.

I probably wouldn't come out of my way to eat here, but it was convenient, so, it worked. I think it's probably a 2.5 food place but since our service was good I think rounding it up to 3 is fair. Show owner comment »

If I weren't a po' student, I'd probably eat here all the damn time. Beautifully, freshly done seafood. I've come here for restaurant week twice and plan to go again next time! I really enjoyed the clams casino, fresh oysters, and dessert of my restaurant week meal last time, but the lobster roll blew me away -- TONS of lobster meat, minimal mayonnaise. No skimping on portions!

This is one place I absolutely want to come back to in order to pay full price for a rare treat.  I think I should suggest it for my parents when they come for my graduation. :)

The stuffed challah french toast is consistently a winner here! Huge, delicious, satisfying. But I went to brunch here with some friends this morning and unfortunately their other eggy type brunch plates were not very filling.

I still NEED to try their baked goods!

Come early because otherwise you'll be standing in line forever. We got there at 10am on the dot and the restaurant filled up immediately.

This place is a winner in my book!

True, if you eat here more than once a month, the blood in your arteries will be replaced by cholesterol instead.

True, the syrup they provide with their breakfast items is chiefly a combination of corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup, This is definitely more of a BYOMS place, bring your own maple syrup.

True, if you walk in here thinking that you're just going to have a sandwich for dinner, your eyeballs will bulge once you look at the prices on the menu.

But!!! If any restaurant were modeled on heaven, this would surely be the place.  Your meal actually starts with a small selection of complimentary pickles and delicious bread, before the waiter brings your sandwich out.  These are top-notch deli sandwiches with enormous portions served in a spotless, mostly-white restaurant that shines by attentive and friendly staff.

The portions really are ENORMOUS - enough to make two or three hearty meals. But after your eyeballs are done bulging at the size of these things, the meats are moist, savory, and flavorful.  The service is super friendly and attentive. And they give you chocolate chip cookies with the check.

Bottom line: Go for the full fat corned beef if you're getting corned beef. Come hungry.

Another bakery item-related update: they've started carrying items from Cacao in Cleveland Park.  The chocolate croissants are kind of meh, but the beignets, sweet and savory at the same time, are to die for!

    NO NO NOOOOOOOOOO !

For reasons beyond their control, they are no longer able to carry the croissants.

Oh well, it's still a 4 star kind of place to hang out. Sometimes I eat dinner there when I haven't gone grocery shopping. Nom.

Pretty much all of the coffee shops I like have an atmosphere like Modern Times - laid back, with a mixture of people studying/working hard and people who feel free to talk anyway.

But Modern Times has a special distinction -- CROISSANTS! ZOMG they are so good. I only ever got off my lazy butt to come check out the place because my professor, who taught me in Philly but is resident in DC, basically had a foodgasm every time she brought up Politics and Prose and the croissants that Modern Times serves.  Well -- what can I say -- after my first croissant here, I had a foodgasm too. IT TASTES LIKE A WHOLE STICK OF BUTTER IT IS SO GOOD. I think they're fresh-baked every day, and while it wasn't served to me still-warm as I had hoped, the outsides are all flaky, but the insides melt in your foodgasming mouth because of the butter. FUCK YEAH! But after my first taste of the plain croissant, I ran into my professor at Modern Times who suggested trying the chocolate one. It was even better! Even though the chocolate doesn't taste much like chocolate (I go for the extra-bitter stuff) but the mouthfeel is amazing -- it injects an additional layer of sugary melty-chocolate sensation into the soft, full-stick of butter feel. Holy crap it is so good.

They could use upholstered furniture. But I guess my ass is squishy enough from the chocolate croissants that I don't really need extra cushioning.

The Prime Rib

I want to give this place four stars because they had a really good special when I went ($15 for 15oz prime rib, plus we got a free appetizer for mentioning Yelp), but I just wasn't that impressed by their signature dish -- so either it's a matter of "you get what you pay for" or "full price at this place must really suck." The meat was good but not great. The service was good but not great. The ambiance was nostalgic and funny and very 1990s hotel lobby, but unless a restaurant's environment is exceptional, that's pretty much on the bottom of my list.

So yeah, A-OK, but probably not my first choice for steak.  Oh well, at least I made my mother in law happy by texting her to let her know that her steak is better than a fancy steakhouse.

MiG Bar

Awesome, tiny laid back bar, super friendly bartender/owner. Don't be confused about the location - it shares the same doorway as the Rendezvous Lounge; it's just up the stairs.  Drinks are cheap and this is anything but a meat market. The decor is oh-so and if you're a hipster in denial, this is somewhere you won't feel out of place.

Bring your own friends though, or risk spending your last night in DC getting mired in a conversation with an attractive white (i.e. privileged) woman who is against gay marriage but yet cannot conceive of a world in which gay people are maltreated [who also has smooth enough social skills to insinuate that you aren't attractive, gee thanks]. That may or may not be an incentive, I guess.

...let's just say that was the perfect capstone to a place I'm more than happy to leave. At least it was entertaining.
