1-800-flowers.com

Category: Florists

3.0 star rating
1/27/2012
Unlike Toni's stellar experience with 1-800-flowers, mine was ASS and though I know better than to Yelp while angry, I can't seem to stop myself.

Wednesday was my sister-in-law's 40th birthday and we ordered her flowers through this site (since Proflowers went way downhill over the past few years.). I liked that I could choose flowers that would be delivered via a local florist as opposed to some generic place somewhere out there. My SIL lives in Bellingham, Washington and though they live in a somewhat rural area(about 8 miles outside of the main city), it is in a large development of houses and should not have been a problem.

Well, it was a problem. Her flowers never arrived. I called 1-800 to inquire about the delivery as they were supposed to be there. I called around 6pm and was told by a representative that the florist had until 7pm to deliver the flowers. Interesting because according to their website, birthdays and funerals are a priority with deliveries. Anyway, at 7:10, still no flowers so I called again. After waiting on hold for quite some time, I got through to another rep and was advised that shortly after my first call (6pm) the local florist let them know that their delivery truck had mechanical problems and since it was a rural area, they had to wait 3 hours for a tow truck and that sadly 3 orders did not make it to their destination and one of those orders was my SIL's. You would think that 1-800 would have contacted me immediately but no. I felt like an asshole all excited for my SIL to get this beautiful arrangement of flowers along with a birthday balloon.

The rep then asked if I wanted the order to be delivered tomorrow by the same florist. My response was-"how do we know their delivery truck will work"? She wouldn't give me the name of the florist so I couldn't in my right thinking call a local florist without thinking it could be the same company that fucked up my order in the first place. I told her to cancel my order all together and promptly sent an email to my SIL apologizing profusely for the delivery failure. I also started writing a 1 star review for this site-until I got a call from "David" a "supervisor" from 1-800 Flowers. David apologized profusely, and while I could tell he was very nervous dealing with a customer like me (assertive, verbal), he said he could guarantee delivery the next day and offered up a discount. I had told him I was more prone to scrap the order all together and send my SIL an E-certificate through Amazon instead but again, he assured me the flowers would get to my SIL.

I am happy to say my SIL received her flowers a day late, but she was thrilled beyond belief at what was ordered for her. Instead of the one star review this service was going to receive from me, I am upping it to a 3 star review though still with hesitation. I have to see how my credit card will be charged or credited.

I think my best bet for the future,  I will just go back to the old days of using Google to find a local floral shop (or Yelp) in the area where I want to send flowers to and stop using these "easy" services since I keep seeming to get disappointed.

Kabob House

Please round up to 3.5 stars:

I have driven by this place a gazillion times and Tuesday evening, I finally had the chance to try it as the daughter and I were on our own for dinner and when we are without my husband, we try to indulge in food choices he doesn't particularly care for.

We walked in around 6:15pm to a basically empty restaurant (one person was paying their bill), the State of the Union address on and the owner on his laptop at one of the empty tables. This always makes me a little nervous, but we sat down and were given menus right away.

Ilana ordered the lamb kabob which came with a small salad, rice and broiled tomato. The meat was tender, but not as tasty as I would have wanted. I had the saffron shrimp platter that came with 7 small marinated shrimp, grilled vegetables (onion, zucchini) and rice along with a small salad. The shrimps were delicious but on the small side. The salads were served first along with a basket of freshly grilled pita like bread. The bread was fabulous and the dressing on the salad was a light vinaigrette.

As we were finishing up a party of four walked in that were obvious friends with the owners speaking very friendly and loudly and I was glad we were finishing our meal and ready to pay the check when they arrived because I began to feel like I was intruding on a reconnection.

Not sure if we would come back but with all of these reviews, I am sure the lack of patronage was due to it being a plain old Tuesday.

We came here for the lunch buffet the other day and while the salad bar was pretty good (the Alamo RT has the best of all but doesn't offer a pizza buffet), the pizza selection was mediocre and very slow coming out.

We decided the buffet selection at the RT up Bollinger is much better and that they are faster at getting new pizzas out especially as customers keep coming in. To boot, it was freezing cold in here and maybe they keep it that way to make people leave faster?

Since the Danville RT has now closed, this is the closest in the area and while Round Table is way better than Mountain Mike's, I doubt we will be back here again.

If you are claustrophobic or very tall, beware of this place. It is packed and stacked and with so much on display it is hard to tell what is what.

I will say that customer service is awesome-we were asked by at least 3 different staff if we needed help or were looking for anything in particular. Since the husband and I were just browsing, we didn't need help, but found some ideas of things we liked after doing a little bit of ducking around.

Since I really like to support local business, I wanted to give this place a try, but I am not sure if we have lighting needs this is the store I will choose just due to how overwhelming the space/inventory was but we shall see.

Update - 1/23/2012
AAACCCKKK....Not sure what to rate this, but this is no longer a privately owned Hotel. This place is now called Hyatt House, so if you feel like staying at a place that sounds like a rehab, go for it. I hope the place is as good as it was when we needed them in 2009 and 2010!

After the high quote I received from the Sheraton for a block of rooms for my wedding, I decided to check out other hotels in the area just to see what they could offer me. This is where the Sierra Suites comes in...

The Sierra Hotel is set up as a business type hotel. This is the kind where executives fly in for meetings/conferences stay for a week and then go back home. Due to this, rates on the weekend are less expensive than rates during the week and more than likely is why there are no weekend shuttles and the breakfast provided is not as fancy.

I worked with Samantha who was nothing but sweet and accommodating. She suggested I come and tour the property(which I did) and then offered me rates for different sized suites. All of which were less than the Sheraton and all of which included breakfast (according to the guests who stayed until Monday morning, the breakfast was much better during the week than on the weekend), free Wi-Fi, a fitness room, business center (with computers available), a sitting area and more space in the actual room. There is also laundry, a snack shop of sorts and a pool/hot tub.

I put together little bags for the out-of-towners and the staff delivered them to the rooms as people were scheduled to arrive. Some arrived the Friday before the wedding and some arrived the day of the wedding (Sunday).

All but one of my guests (I had 12 in total stay here) were incredibly happy with this hotel. They found the service to be great, the breakfast decent for an included breakfast and the rooms to be spacious and comfortable. My groom even stayed in a suite here the night before our wedding and said he would stay again in a heartbeat-especially after staying at the Sheraton on our wedding night!

Blue Bottle Coffee Co.

I have been a fan of Blue Bottle for a while now, but have never been to the Oakland location until last weekend when I had the opportunity. I was able to score a parking spot close by and even in the cold, there was a line of people waiting outside.

I waited in line, and started chatting with the woman in front of me. Like my true form, she ended up giving me her business card and I emailed her a recipe (we had been talking about the food scene in Oakland. Since the line was long, a guy came out from around the corner to ask if anyone wanted drip coffee. I told him yes, thinking it would be faster then waiting for a latte, but by the time I got up to the register, he hadn't made it back to the drip coffee area (he went down the line asking if people wanted drip). I quickly advised I wanted a latte instead of the drip and was handed a beautiful one (though not very hot) in no time.

They have sugar in the raw but no fake sugar, so I pulled out my Grandma stash of Splenda in my purse (Grandma=stolen Splenda from other restaurants), and doctored up my coffee to my liking and walked down to meet some friends for brunch at Boconova. The restaurant was great and didn't really care that I walked in with my own coffee and after brunch, a few of us walked back to Blue Bottle where I had yet ANOTHER latte, but sadly, was out of my Grandma stash and forgot to reload.

The latte was smooth, delicious and perfect. The second one was a little less stellar then the first one, but alas, it was still fantastic. Lucky for me, I have Sideboard here in Danville who also makes perfect lattes with Blue Bottle and for those of you who need another Blue Bottle secret on this side of the Caldecott, Paxti's Pizza in Lafayette opens at 7am, and serves BB and great baked goods!

I have been to this Safeway several times and I will warn anyone who wants to shop during the week that between the hours of 3 and 4pm-beware. With a Starbucks inside, the middle school kids swarm this place for candy, chips and other what nots.

Otherwise, this is a fine Safeway-even if it is on the small side.

I have been coming to this HD on and off since moving to the area. I am not a big fan of any hardware store, but this one had come in handy for plants, air filters and various other things over the years.

The one thing I hate about coming to Home Depot is that when I come alone, I get lots of attention/help and am asked questions if I need any help finding things, etc. and when I come in with the husband, they ask HIM and not me! I find it sexist that when I accompany a man they assume the man is the one looking for things or knows where things are. HRMPH.

Bollinger Nails Salon

A very sweet girlfriend of mine treated me to an overpriced pedicure here the other day. She set up appointments for us to be seated together (we were) and though our appointments were set for 10:30, they weren't ready for us until 10:45.

I have been to 2 other Bollinger Nail Salon's in the area and they are all kept very clean. This one, being the newest is sharply decorated and has comfortable seating but it is a chain and this chain is into making money. A regular pedicure with a salt scrub ran $36. No flower for me, no extra massage and seriously, with all the nail shops in the area, I doubt I will come back to this chain unless treated by a friend again.

Athens Burgers Restaurant

If it were not for the amazing owner and customer service, this place would be rated a 2 for food. Greasy spoon-fine if you are working off a hangover, but not the delicious nor amazing stuff lots of the reviews claim it to be.

We came here for dinner by chance with a girlfriend and her husband. It was an impromptu double date and we ended up here because the restaurant we tried to go to had an hour long wait. I even called two other places in the area and their wait was even longer(so much for resolutions or paying off the holiday debt).

My friends' each ordered burgers of different kinds along with french fries and onion rings. My husband ordered a cheeseburger and since no one had ever been here before I was surprised the person ringing us up didn't ask or share what came on the burgers. I decided to order the fried chicken and that Yelp world should never be done by anyone-ever. Everyone agreed the burgers were ok-not bad, kind of along the lines of Nation's but the patties were not as big. My fried chicken was overcooked, the skin or the "fried part" burned, flavorless (really needed salt) and pretty disgusting. The best part was the salad that came before my meal-but for a "Greek" salad, it was missing olives, feta and the like.

I stopped eating French fries in December 2010 but have become somewhat of an onion ring connoisseur. I am a breaded type of onion ring lover as opposed to a the batter kind. The onion rings here are breaded, but fake tasting. Basically,  the onion rings here suck and not in a good way. Carl's Jr. or Jack in the Box (both close by) have better ones.

Our plates were cleared and shortly after, the owner brought me my cash saying I obviously didn't like my fried chicken (hardly ate any of it) and apologized. I told him giving me back my money was unnecessary but very thoughtful.

I seriously doubt I will be coming back here, but kudos to the owner for being so nice (and cute to boot) and paying attention to what comes back to the kitchen.
