Stay Hotel

I've only been here 15 minutes so far but here's what's happened so far:
* I tried to plug in my computer but all the outlets are two-prong (seriously?!) except the one across the room so my cord is stretched across the room.
* I backed up the chair at the desk and immediately slammed into the bed. There is about 3 inches clearance between the two.
* I washed my face and my elbow smacked into the door because you're basically standing outside the bathroom while washing your face (it's that small).
* That caused me to rear up my head which smacked into the shelf over the sink because that shelf hovers almost right over the faucet.

I think someone is videotaping this all for their amusement. That's the only possible explanation.

I'm switching hotels tomorrow for the rest of my visit.

I now get that they call the hotel Stay because they're pleading with you.

The reason this gets 4 stars is mostly because there is absolutely nothing else in the area that's even half-decent. A bad area to work, for sure.

The  dutch crunch rolls are great, the garlic spread is super-yummy and they have a good selection of both meats and gourmet potato chips. Other than that, it's a sandwich shop but in this area that's sadly enough.

Great selection and in the short time I was there three different people asked me if I needed help. Goodbye forever Home Depot.

Amenian food in Carlsbad didn't seem like an obvious match to me but I'm now a convert. All the grilled shish-kebabs were solid, the falafel was light and fluffy, the salad was tasty and the garlic dip was garlicky. Our waiter put the hard sell on everything but was witty and charming enough that we laughed heartily and followed most of his suggestions. The combo platters all come with soup, salad, pita, dip, and rice so the price is a bit more but you leave feeling well fed. Get an outside table and enjoy yourself.

This place is insane.

But that's a good thing when you're a kid.

You walk into this place and it's just a chaotic swirl of screams and color and water. And every kid looks like they're having the time of their life. My daughter, who is only 15 months old, was easily the youngest kid I saw and was a little overwhelmed at first. But she very quickly discovered the gurgling fountains and waterfalls and spitting pipes and decided this was aqua-heaven on earth.

When we first made the half-hour drive down to Newark, I turned to my wife and said to her "I'm not doing that drive again just to come to a pool". By the end of our stay, I retracted that. We're doing the drive again.

My sister and her family were visiting and we wanted to order pizza.  "It better not be bad pizza," they threatened.

I guaranteed them it would not be bad but also couldn't promise they'd be blown away.

They took a few bites and said "You're right".

They burst out of the gate with a fantastic meal but pulled up limp for the finale. We started with the lentil soup with croutons that tasted like rosemary puree being mainlined directly into your mouth. Incredible. They also brought around a basket of great foccaccia to accompany.

Then came venison ravioli in a venison sauce. Very rich but exquisitely good. 2 for 2.

The stumble was on a monkfish special. The fish didn't have the flavor I'd hoped for and, served atop some sauteed spinach, just seemed relatively uninspired. The service was spectacular though the poor waiter couldn't hide his disappointment when he saw I only ate half.

Certainly worth a second try given the first two courses. If I could only get back to London...

The Metropolitan

It was cold and dreary most of the time I was in London this time so the clean white and wood interior of the Metropolitan felt like a welcome refuge. I spent much of my time inside the room working and never really got cabin fever.

The hotel certainly would have earned four stars if they hadn't given me such a crappy view for a room (and the lobby looked empty so don't tell me everything else was booked). Yes, I'm using Yelp to be vindictive. That's part of the charm of the site.

I liked the low bed with the great microsuede comforter. I liked the tall windows (despite the crappy view). And the shower had great water pressure - a real treat in the UK. The service was fantastic and the location pretty damn good. I'd go back but demand a better room.

SOS is classic British food. I know that probably makes some folks excited but not me. (Sorry) I actually had a tough time selecting anything on the menu I was truly excited about. I ended up choosing the special which was Cornish game hen cooked in a tangine. In other words, I chose the one guest item that was Moroccan instead of English. Of course, I got a side of chips and those were perfectly fried.

Good atmosphere and fun location across from the meat market. But London has too many other exciting places to come back here to do anything other than drink.

PS You do not need a jacket to dine here. There are different floors and at least the two I saw were far more casual.

In a world of Amazon and Barnes and Noble, Elliott Bay makes you proud that the kick-ass independent bookstore that has staff hand-written reviews on little cards and front displays that don't feature "Twilight" still exists.
