First Fridays at the Natural History Museum combines my favorite things:
* Animal dioramas
* Hip party atmosphere way larger than any I can fit in my apartment or even manage to muster in terms of sheer number of friends
* Live music
* Walking around museum exhibits after hours with alcohol in hand
The most delightful surprize was that although I had not purchased concert tickets (couldn't figure out how to do that online - suggestions?) what I assumed had been a private concert is pumped through speakers and displayed on two filmscreens in the main chamber for auxiliary viewing. No ticket, no problem. You can still enjoy the show.
The ticket I did have let me in the place. I grew up outside Washington, D.C. and have fond memories of the taxidermied African animals behind plexiglass that fascinated me as a kid. These displays still fascinate me - all the more so because I'd just watched Bear Grylls exploring Zimbabwe on Man vs. Wild. I saw the world through his eyes.
Survival wasn't that hard as there's a full bar and snacks in several rooms with relatively short lines.
I arrived late and missed a lecture my friends attended on biomimicry so next time I'll cut out of work early. By the time I arrived, 7:30, families and children had left.
Good range of attendees from families, to 20s, hipsters, to museum members.
