Ravenous Update:
Food is still good, and still stupidly overpriced.
The reservations system is a joke. My friend was actually told by the hostess that they don't listen to the messages that are left and dump them. So if you call and don't get a person, don't bother leaving a message.
They will accept a small number of nightly walk ins if you get there early for dinner. Otherwise you can eat at the bar, full menu is available.
Bartendars Larry and Adam mix damn fine drinks. -

Fancy-Shmancy and over priced. 9 dollars for 3 ricotta stuffed ravioli? Really? Really? Seriously? Yeah.
The service was really slow, so slow the waitress forgot we had ordered dessert. So we skipped it and waited 10 mins for our check. The first 2 wines we ordered off the menu weren't in house, so that was annoying.
I dunno.. yeah, the food was pretty good I guess. The presentations reminded me of something you'd see on Top Chef. Everything seemed a little too salty for me though. I had the hunter salad, bitter greens with pistachios and parmesan served with house made duck prosciutto. Sounded way better than it was, and not worth the 9 dollar price tag.
Bottom line.. been there, done that. Next!

Club Firestone
Categories: Dance Clubs, Music Venues
Why down to 2 stars? I opened a tab at the bar, and closed it rather quickly. I ended up with 2 charges on my card, one for my actual tab ($14) and another for someone else ($87). Called the club to get it fixed, but no one can be bothered to return my call. So... yeah.
Come only if the band you've been dying to see is here and if you want to drink, pay in cash.

My clubbing days are long gone. I'll still go out dancing every now and again, but it in no way measures up to ... well, you can figure it out.
Anywho, these days, when\if I go to Club Firestone it's for live music. Generally, it'll be a bigger name band than would be at the Social, but similar style music. The venue is large, multi-leveled, and loud. The stage is pretty tall, so you can see it if your squashed in the back corner, but just barely.
Full bar, which is always nice and the bartenders do pour them stiff. The prices are a little high, but not so much that you feel robbed.
Downsides... if the show is sold out, you will be packed in like a sardine, and unless you get there early, you'll be in said squashed back corner, jumping to see over the sea of heads. The place is designed to be a dance club, more so than a live music venue, so you'll be able to hear everything great, seeing is a different story.
Ok, now all you modern day club kids, give us a review on how it is to dance here!

Vamp Hair Studio

Rebecca styles my hair, no matter what crazy requests I come up with. She's awesome.
Parking can be tight in Thornton Park, but they've got a small lot in back. Bonus points for that!

Got my hair done here this weekend, and gotta say... I look good. Well, my hair does anyway. I went here on a tip from a friend who lives nearby, they've only been open about 6 months now.
I went to Rebecca, and was really impressed with her suggestions on color and cut. Her specialty of the day seemed to be fixing other salon's mistakes (my hair included). She is laid back, friendly, uber chic. She owns the salon and rents out chairs to other stylists, each one free to do their own thing.
Price was a nice surprise too. For highlights, color, cut and style, $100. Yes! 5th star earned for beating out my last salon on price, quality and convenience.
I don't think I'll be able to continue to see her, but wish her the best of luck in her new practice!

Dr. Belnick and her staff are top notch. I've bounced around to a few different doctors around town, and I've never been more comfortable talking to a doctor. She really does listen, and, yeah, you may have to wait a little longer to see her. But you know why? Because she doesn't race you out the door.
So many practices operate like factories, not this one. They email prescriptions to the pharmacy, handle refills without needing you to come back in, and the nurses do triage over the phone.
A great doc, a great practice. 5 stars, all around.

Rice and Beans Cocina Latina
Category: Latin American
Here's how it breaks out.
2 scoops of rice. They have 4 different kinds, and all vegetarian.
2 pieces of meat. They have 3 kinds of chicken, beef, pork or goat.
Choice of yucca or sweet plantains.
Choice of red or black beans, both made without meat.
A side salad that is made to order.
Add a drink and you're still under 10 bucks!
Oh, and the food? Yeah. It's awesome. Meat is super tender, falling off the bone. I had a scoop of the yellow rice and a scoop of the red rice, because you can mix and match... and I can't make a decision. Both were good, but I liked the red rice better in the end.
The chicken was delicious, but a little cold. That's my only complaint. Not all food was up to temp. Still though, it was delicious.
I opted for the red beans, because it's been forever since I was able to get them without pork. They were super flavorful, the texture was perfect too. Loved 'em!
Holy crap, it really is a crazy deal. So much food. So good. So cheap! LOVE IT!

The black rice was cooked perfectly, it was 'Forbidden' black rice which has usually come to me very starchy and glutinous, not so here. I loved the stronger texture of the rice, it went well with the sauce and meat.
Service was outstanding, the dessert. Holy crap. We ordered the warm chocolate lava cake with butter popcorn ice cream. I only wanted one bite of the cake, it was good but too much. The ice cream was the clear winner on the plate. Original and delicious!
I still don't care for the bathrooms, and those large booths are unruly. Everything else is fantastic.

Very pricey, very hip. This is the kind of place where you spend a lot and get a really beautiful presentation, but not alot of food. The wine list is really impressive, best thing about it is you can order everything on it by the glass, even the expensive stuff!
If you're with a group, you'll probably end up in the massive U shaped booths. They look cool, but aren't very comfortable, and are especially troublesome if someone has to go to the bathroom during dinner. The servers have to reach across the people sitting on the sides of the U to reach the folks at the back. It's a bit awkward.
Service from the bar was dreadfully slow. You know you're in trouble when your appetizers come out before your first drink order. It took 20 mins to get our cocktails. I would have ordered a second, but I'd already finished eating.
Food wise, I think it's best to either order from the left side of the menu - apps and small bites. Prices on that side range from $10-20. On the right side are the main courses, prices start around $25 and go up from there. My arctic char was fishy, as were my friend's scallops. Everyone who ordered meat or poultry loved their dishes and appetizers and sides were very tasty. Seriously good pizza. Seriously.
Also? The kids wandering around the restaurant, running through the bead curtain by the bathrooms, that were right by our massive table was annoying. The servers just looked at us apologetically.
This is no place for kids, so either get a sitter or go to 310 Park South people.
Finally, the bathroom situation. They opted for form over function. You have to hit a button to open the door to it from the outside. The walls of the stalls are glass, so you can see your neighbor fairly well. The sink is controlled by where your feet are, so you have to really step up to the trough sink. The soap is on the wooden towel rack, not very close to the sink. The door opens by sensor to get out.
So! When you go, leave your kids at home, be sure to make a reservation, opt for a table over a booth, don't order seafood (unless it's fried) and be prepared to wait for an empty bathroom if you're a shy pee-er.
I love Sea Thai, but lately the service has been lacking. I'm not sure where the disconnect is, but the past few times I've gone, my order has been messed up. For instance last night I ordered food spiced Hot but it came out mild. My poor sister ended up with the scorching hotness I craved in her dish instead. Sorry Amy.
They were very nice about fixing it, and these hiccups won't keep me from coming back. But.... yeah. The luster they once had has faded for me a bit.
Overall I'm still a fan, but hoping they get things back on track.

Sea Thai has been a victim of my yelp dyslexia. Every so often I forget to review a place, but tell everyone I know how great it is. I'm sorry Sea Thai.
This place is really nice. It's in a strip mall off 50, and you'd never know how nice it is on the inside from the outside. The table setting is spot on, down to the mini flower arrangement being smack dab in the middle of the table, just under the soft spot light from the dangling lights.
I've been here quite a few times since they opened last year or so. Everytime I go, I try something different and have never been disappointed. Some of my favorite dishes... the tulip dumpling appetizer (minced chicken, shrimp and spices in a tulip shaped dumpling). For dinner, the Smokey Pot (chicken and shrimp, veggies and tons of spices simmered in a pot and served at the table with rice).
Tonight I had coconut shrimp for an appetizer, and gotta say, best coconut shrimp EVER. (And I really dig those buggers)
The curry is also very good. The yellow curry which is usually mild, they'll spice it up for you if you ask for it. And if you become a regular, they'll remember how hot you like your food.
Finally, the service is spot on. The food comes out quick, no matter if you're the only table or the place is packed. Service, decor, plating and food quality really sets this place apart from the rest.
The chili rellenos are still a bit inconsistent, but the burritos, chimichangas, tacos and enchiladas are all good.

I've gone back a few times, always for Friday happy hour. The food is good. Still I've had better at other Habenero locations, but still good. They do offer lots of good happy hour drink specials during the week, unfortunately, none on Friday. So yeah... that kinda sucks.

I had a pretty good dinner at El Cerro. It's in the same franchise as the Habenero restaurants around town, which for me was a good sign. (See my review of Habanero's 2)
I ordered a top shelf margarita, made with cazadores tequila for $8 bucks. Kinda pricey, but I got a good pour. Not very well mixed, but nothing a few stirs wouldn't fix. The second margarita was supposed to be a repeat of the first, but I think I ended up with a cheaper tequila and not as good of a pour.
Note: Like many other places, they offer 'gold' tequila margartias a buck more than house. DON'T FALL FOR THAT. Gold tequila is the exact same thing as the bottom line silver with caramel color added. All that extra buck is buying you is food coloring.
For dinner I had a combo of a beef enchilada and chili rellenos. Not sure if they were out of poblanos, because the chili's used were smaller and hotter. Good, but not exactly what I wanted. I've had it better at other places, other Habaneros in fact.
Over all, not bad.
I had the kung pao shrimp ordered extra hot. It came to me medium at best and slightly sweet. Not good. I opted for plain fried rice (vs the standard pork) and a veggie egg roll. The veggie egg roll was really gross. It tasted like it had been fried in really old grease. Didn't have more than 1 bite.
This meal reminds me of why I thought I didn't like Chinese food. Going with 2 over 1 star because while the front of the house guy wasn't particularly friendly, he did helpfully offer the options to non-pork sides.
Come with an order in hand (or better yet, already placed), it'll save a few headaches and help ensure they've got all that you need. We were there to save on some shipping costs, a few hours down 75 and gas was worth it. The people were nice and helpful. We got the truck loaded up and were back on our way in about 45 mins.
Their products are highly recommended, they've got everything you need whether you're a hobbyist or starting a beekeeping business.
Date

It's been over a year since I last tried to dine at TRP, and they've made some logistical changes that have made a huge difference. First one, they are using Open Table for reservations, so no more 'lost' calls! YAY!
And reservations are an absolute must. It is said you can walk in and try and get a seat at the bar. Don't count on it though, and the service you get in the main dining room is well worth the call a couple of days before you want to go.
Speaking of service, it was superb for our dinner! Our waiter gave us suggestions, talked wine without being snotty, and really helped make the meal special. Exactly what great service should do! Now... keep in mind, things aren't speedy here. Don't come if you're in a hurry. Plan to spend 2 hours at dinner, and you'll be fine.
On to the food! I'm happy to report serving sizes have improved. Well, for the salads anyway. I had the seasonal Harvest Apple salad, and gotta say.. it was one of the best salads I've ever had. Yeah. Bitter greens, roasted apples, hazelnuts, pomegranate seeds and chunk of blue cheese. Ohmahgawd... so good.
The burger I had avoided because the truffle fries were way too truffley for me. I had to do it this time though, and after one bite, I'd been converted. The Ravenous Pig has the best burger in town. Yes... yes it does. ...For now anyway!
So bottom line, when every element of my meal can qualify as 'one of the best ever...' the place is a 5 star joint.
