Ecco Ultra Lounge

I've been here twice and I will NEVER go back again. I don't get the hype and the pretentiousness with Ecco. The place isn't all that nicely decorated, the people are not good looking, the music sucks, the drinks are weak, the AC is on WAY too high (conserve some energy people!), and most importantly of all, the bartenders here really have no clue what they're doing. The last time i was here, I had an open tab. When it was time for me to close my tab at the end of the night, apparently they gave me back the wrong card! Although it was my fault for not checking the name on the card, it was dark, I was not completely sober, and the card looked exactly like mine  (at least they gave me back the correct ID). When I called to ask about my card, some Paris Hllton bimbo in an annoyingly high pitched voice told me they didn't have my card there. NO APOLOGIZES, NO EXPLANATION, NO ATTEMPT TO TRY TO HELP ME, NOTHING. Luckily, who ever had it didn't use my card and I was able to put a hold on my account.

So, a big F*CK YOU, ECCO. And thanks for absolutely nothing.

I LOVE to brunch. Brunching is a very "LA" thing to do. We do it so much that the word "brunch" goes beyond a noun and into the realm of a verb. It's when you eat your salad or eggs (egg whites only please) on the sidewalk of a busy street, wearing your oversized designer sunglasses and catching a glimpse of a celebrity or two.

Food, with their organic and all natural foods fits snuggly into the LA brunch scene. Unlike other brunch places that have waitress to take your order, you order at the register and sit down with a number. Although their menu is small, don't forget to look on the wall for their daily specials. I thought the price was fair. A plate of eggs, bacon, potatoes and toast was $10.50, well worth it considering the quality of the food. I thought their bacon was perfect and their jam was exotic. I will definitely come back!

Another overpriced "French" brunch place with mediocre food. For $12 bucks, you get literally ONLY get 3 bites of overcooked omelette and 3 pieces of toast. Their eggs benedict was average, nothing spectacular. Being that their food wasn't very good, at least give us more food, add some potatoes to the dish or something!

2 stars for the great service and tasteful decor. I will not come back for brunch, but possibly dinner.

This is my favorite place to go for AYCE sushi, only 30 bucks per person. Their fish are fresh and the waitresses are friendly. The place isn't too big. But I would recommend going with a large group of people so you're able to order a greater variety of food. They only do reservations for part of 6 or more.

Warning: sometimes they serve you the rolls first before the sushi thinking the rolls will fill you up and you wont want the sushi anymore. But that trick doesn't work with my friends and I. We get our money's worth. =)

its a cute place, with a patio dining area thats perfect for a warm day. Everything else was just mediocre. My friends and I walked in, plenty of available tables, lots of eye contact with workers, but no one greeted us, so we weren't sure to seat ourselves or wait for someone to seat us. Finally after minutes of awkwardly standing at the door looking lost, the host told us to take a seat. At the table, the silverware were DIRTY! My spoon and napkin had drops of coffee on it, which looks like someone used the spoon to stir their coffee and just left it on the table. The food was nothing to write home about either. Their omelets with egg whites were watery. Regular omelets were dry. Not a fan of their potatoes. Overall, very blah.

I came here for brunch with some friends on a Saturday and surprisingly, there was no one there! We ordered the sweet potato fries (which were really good) to start and each of us ordered a savory crepe. Although the savory crepes were okay, it's just WAAAYYY too rich, thick, and fattening. One person should not finish a savory crepe by themselves. Unfortunately, the restaurant doesn't allow the sharing of savory crepes, further feeding into the obesity epidemic that plaques the country.

Sushi Central

Sushi Central is a very unassuming sushi restaurant. It's small and the menu is limited. But that's why it's SO good! They don't waste their time with tons of "specialty" rolls that are usually overcooked and drenched in some sauce that overpowers the fish. They focus their attention on really simple food that emphasizes the freshness of the fish.

They have the usual selection of sashimi and rolls that you expect that most sushi places. My party ordered the spicy tuna roll(spicy!), soft shelled crab roll, crunchy white fish roll, and 2 of the blue crab hand rolls. We also ordered the salmon, seared tuna, and seared albacore sashimi, seaweed salad, miso soups, and fried ice cream. The sashimi were REALLY fresh, buttery and just melts in your mouth. I'm not a big fan of salmon sashimi because I think its too "ordinary," but their salmon was perfect, it didn't even need any wasabi nor soy sauce.

I also thought the service was great. It wasn't slow at all! The food came out at a great pace, very conductive of good conversation, but not slow enough where you run out of food and wonder when your next dish will come out. And the waitress constantly came by to check up on us and refill our water.

Although Sushi Central is more expensive than your typical strip mall sushi place (check for party of 3 came to $120), I thought the quality of the food and the service was well worth it.

Holly's West Lounge - CLOSED

 Update - 3/2/2009
Now that everyone and their momma found out about Holly's West, be prepared to stand in a line that doesn't move. When you're in line, there is a 110% chance that the obnoxious group in front of you will have at least 10 more friends join them in line. Of course the bouncer doesn't say anything to them. But if you're with a whole bunch of girls, just go up to the bouncer, he'll let you in after a few minutes. If you're with a group of guys, then come before 9pm.

I have a theory that the owner(s) and bouncers try to piss you off as much as possible while you're in line so that you'll have more drinks once you get inside.

Holly's is the antithesis of the typical LA scene:

    1) There's plenty of street parking, for free!
    2) There are no lines!
    3) There is no cover, there is no guestlist!
    4) There's no dress code.
    5) The drinks are moderately priced and the drinks are strong!
    6) The bathroom isn't fancy. There is no lady in the restroom handing you a towel and selling you $5 dollar gum. In fact, the bathroom is disgusting, probably one of the most disgusting restrooms I've ever been in. There are two toilets, but nothing separating the toilets, so only 1 person can use it.

Conclusion: You can get drunk and have a good time for cheap! Just try not to use their restrooms.

The Room

A year ago, I would have rated this place a 4-5. This was back when Cahuenga was still crackin- no lines, no cover charge, and a cool crowd. Now, bars such as Ecco and Bar Delux opened up bringing the Hollywood-ness back to Cahuenga, with bouncers who act like like they're God with a clip board in front of the gates of heaven and paparazzi strolling up and down the street. With the Hollywood-ness comes a $5 cover charge for The Room. I dont mind paying $5, but it has to be worth it. On a Friday night, the crowed was whack and the drinks were were watered down.

My only consolation was a bacon wrapped hot dog at the end of the night.

It's a smaller take-out restuarant than Cam Huong, but it makes you feel like you're part of the family when you dine in. =) Although their menu consists of only a handful of items, what they lack in quantity, they more than make up for it in quality. You can tell their food is made with extra TLC.

Personally, I can eat their Vietnamese sandwiches all day, everyday. I love their combination sandwich with extra pate. When I got my sandwich, I could tell that they didn't just hastily slap on some meat and meager portions of veggies on it and called it a day. It was constructed perfectly, packed and over-flowing with pickled vegetables and fresh herbs that is simply deliciousness.
