Great feel out on the patio and the service and food were great. Étouffée is good and fries are amazing.

Drink menu is where this place really shines. If you are in the mood for a real cocktail, this is the place to go.

Great lounge, but music up a bit loud for conversations.

I dig the livingroom feel with couches that looked like they came straight from my college dorm, but it's never been the environment that I want to drink in (personal taste)

Service was really good though. They followed us from inside to outside all through the night and didn't bat an eye at splitting up the check.

Only staying in Denver one night before we head up to Estes park.

Found this place on priceline for under $100 so I can't argue about this place at all.

Rooftop pool, great uptown location, friendly staff and nice big rooms with killer balconies.

All pluses here

The American Restaurant

We went to The American Restaurant to celebrate our 1 year anniversary.  I don't give a 1 lightly, but wrapping up the food, service and overall experience, I really feel i'm being extra nicey nice on this one.

REMEMBER:  This is a 4 star restaurant.  With the price tag attached, I'm going to expect a lot more than going to Applebee's for an all you can eat riblet night.  In short, I'm rating this place against other amazing 4 star eating experiences that I've had before this one.

I'll break it down with 3 reasons why this experience was woefully sub-par.

1.  atmosphere-  Basically the only reason it even has a 1 is because of the skyline view of the city.  Apart from that, this restaurant looks like it should have been showcased in an 80's movie about wallstreet yuppies.  The look is absolutely dated and needs a large overhaul.  It's almost comical.

2.  Food-  meh...It wasn't horrible, but it didn't blow us away.  The food was heavy and over complicated.  Don't get me wrong, everything was prepared well, but it almost seemed geared towards the 60 and over crowd, saucey & extremely rich.  Not to mention the fact that they ran out of the snowcrab at 7:30pm on a Friday.  Not really acceptable in my book.
Nothing blew me away and nothing could make up for the horrible...

3. Service!...I give this a ZERO!  A true 4 star experience isn't only about actual food and more with the experience that the staff gives you as the food is being transported to and away from your table.
We had 4 courses and they literally would just plop the food down in front of us without saying a word about it.  I've never seen anything like it.  We waited there, jaw-dropped for someone to come over and at least describe the complicated pieces of food-art presented to us.  When our waitress would finally come back to the table, she literally said...."Well, that's the pork and that's the prime rib."  SERIOUSLY!

It was very apparent that she was new and didn't know the menu yet, but that's absolutely no excuse for a 4 star restaurant.  After a few times of us cornering her to give us a little bit of an explanation about the $300 meal we were ingesting, it was made very apparent that we were basically given up on and we got VERY minimal table appearneces.

One of the poor food runners we pinned down actually pointed to our plate and said.."umm...that is..well, um...that's green."  he then slapped our table a couple of times and ran off.

After the first 2 pours of wine, we were left to fend for ourselves to pour wine our of the extremely large wine carafe.  I'm not trying to be needy here, I can pour my own wine, but  again, it's 4 FREAKING STARS!

We had some many friends recommend this place that I'm really hoping that we just got an almost comical "bad night", but this is a forum for my personal experience and I'm always going to set it straight.

Save your $ and hit up somewhere that offers an unique experience along with their food.  These places are a dying breed and the whole experience left me feeling that these restaurants are very quickly becoming irrelevant.

Did it ruin our anniversary?  Hell no, we got almost more of a kick from the fact that it was such an awful experience.

Will i be back?  Hell no.

Best Western President Hotel

UPDATE:  I got a bit ahead of myself.  The shotty wi-fi, the very small bathroom with the jack hammer showers and the noise from the street combined with the fact that one of the help closed an elevator in my face this morning brings my rating down to 3

I just gotta give this place a 5 star and let me explain why-

Great location in the Theatre District, walking distance to some of the best shows on the planet.

The remodelling looks great.  Walking into the place, it felt like I am in a boutique hotel.  Cool design, bar downstairs, and good service.

Sure the place is cozy, but it's freakin New York!  What are people expecting?

Best part is the rooms.  They might not be huge, but the bed is by far the most comfortable hotel bed I've stayed in that wasn't 4 star.  This place beats out the Millenium by a long shot.

great wall hanging flat screen doesn't hurt either.

For the price, I'm giving this place my thumbs up!

This will be a small review.

Stay at the Pegasus if you want to save a buck and still be right in the middle of the action.  Don't stay here if you think you'll be spending much time recouping in your hotel room or want to get a real Key West feel in your room.

It is what it is.  It's clean, but the help could give a crap about you.  It's great location, but your room is a bit like a 3 hour no-tell motel.

Right next to a Walgreens which is nice and right next door to Mr. Z's pizza for a light night drunken snack.

Captain Tony's Saloon

This is the diviest dive that is right off the strip in Key West.  A lot of great history and the place looks like it's been beaten by a couple of tropical storms in it's day.

The help was nice enough and the drinks were strong, but I wouldn't be ordering a martini here.  Keep it simple and go w/ Tony's Amber beer or a Mount Gay & Coke.

Entertainment was hit & miss while we were there.  The first night had a band there that was just too lout and seemed to be playing for themselves.  You know those bands made up of rockers from the 70's & 80's that have the money now to buy equipment that is way too big for the places they perform?  That is what we were getting.  Made it tough to talk and that's usually #1 at a dive bar.

Second night was much better w/ a very intoxicated guitar player and a girl with a voice that wouldn't quit.  It wasn't perfect, but it really matched the mood of the Keys and we had a blast as we got a bit tipsy.

All and all I really liked Tony's.  It reminded me of my own local drinking hole, just picked up and put in paradise.

This place acted as my office for sometime when i was working from home, so i have seen this place at it's best and worse.

at it's best, its a great place to setup the laptop and have something to watch and listen to while you tap away at whatever you're working on.  the help is usually pretty nice and the coffee ain't bad.

their food offerings are just panini sandwiches.  I've had way too many to count.  they aren't the best, but they could be a lot worse.  They're also very happy to make your sandwich however you like it.

at it's worse, the place is filled w/ highschool or holy rollers that gobble up all of the seats and make the place a little on the loud side for a coffeeshop.  the wifi also really sucks here.  Know your customer and invest in a $100 router!

Don't listen to the uppity nay sayers that don't give this place it's do.   It is what it is.  A dive looking place in on 39th that serves kickass soup.  The apps are not that great, they only have canned drinks, and it's not the most elegant place to eat.  However, the soup more than makes up for all of this.  If you're looking for Pho in KC....go here and you will never be dissappointed
