The 750 sucks beyond belief. Despite the fact that it's a mere minute walk from Stanford's graduate housing, I don't think I'll bring myself to go there again anytime soon. The service is spectacularly slow -- getting a cheese steak and mozzarella sticks at a night where there were maybe five other people at the bar (during the total elapsed time we were there) took just about 2 hours.
'2 hours,' you say, 'for food that takes an iota of effort and time to cook? You can't be serious!' Ah, did I fail to mention that our order of mozzarella sticks was EATEN BY THE STAFF? Yes, somehow the 2 bartenders there managed to forget that the one order that came out of the kitchen in the past half hour was actually ordered by someone in the restaurant! How novel! Thus they proceeded to chow down on our greasy, undercooked fried cheese without a second thought.
It was only after my friend approached the workers, after about an hour of waiting for our so-called 'food', that this was discovered, however. But even then the bartender demanded to see proof of purchase (which he had, obviously) and we were told by the other worker to 'not worry about it.' I suppose that is an attitude one might take only if he had a stomach full of food... our food, that is. Anyways, we needed to wait another ungodly amount of time for our food to be re-made and this time it actually found its way to our table. Hoo-ray.

Seriously. My friend, who has a gluten allergy, went here often for their many flavors of gluten-free beer. Gluten-free beer. See? Everything.
The wonderfully helpful staff doesn't reflect badly on the place, either.

DNA Lounge

Neighborhood: SOMA
- The music is incredible. I went for an event called Bootie http://www.bootiesf.com/ which is a mashup show. Music was pumping with tasteful, funny and intelligent mashups.
- The crowd is eclectic and does not contain some of the more unpleasant demographics found at other dance clubs. No posers in striped shirts, no roving gangs of hoodlums, just people that want to have some serious fun (including one man dressed up as a spam can...). Gays, cougars, weirdos, hippies, nerds, goths -- all get down at DNA.
- The architecture of the club is nice. The main dance floor has several levels, as if it were an ascending staircase to the DJ. A balcony around the main dance floor provides great views. A back room on the upper floor contains a VIP room / second dance floor. Plenty of bars scattered around for easy access to drinks.
- A lot of great little bells and whistles: computer terminals, a lot of cameras whose images get projected on the walls, peanuts with your drinks, place where you can get food upstairs, etc.
- Open until after-hours, which is nice if you want to keep the party going.
The only negative of my experience, I would say, was that the music was _LOUD_. I might consider bringing earplugs next time; I saw a bunch of people wearing them -- perhaps the club hands them out on request?
Anyways, a night well worth repeating! You can count on me being here again sometime soon.

The Bar On Castro - CLOSED
Category: Gay Bars
Neighborhood: Castro
- Everybody is way more friendly, as opposed to the stand-offish vibe that normally pervades dance clubs
- People buy drinks for you (!!!!!)
- Much better music
- Much more interesting / colorful crowd
- Everybody is there to dance, not just stand around and scowl / look cool
- Hilariously, about the same ratio of guys to girls as a straight bar (if anyone knows of a magical bar that is predominately female, please let me know!)
So, all things considered, I think being hit on once in a while is a small price to pay for all the advantages that The Bar On Castro confers. Thus, my first gay bar experience was a successful one (had I not brought a female friend to ward off all potential suitors, the night might have been a little less pleasant...).

All the employees are very friendly.
Edit: they raised the price to $7! Damn! Down one star!
